The importance of a straight back in MA
dtstiachi replied to dtstiachi's topic in Health and Fitness
Nope Mr. Pockets, No Aprils fools joke. I'm not talking about sparing or free fighting. I am talking about doing the Yang family form and making sure the spine is not torqued. I am also talking about not injuring your back by putting to much pressure on the spine or doing something that could potentially mess it up. Even when we spar, (Tue Shou or push hands traing) we still keep our back in alignment and our back straight from the base of the spine to the headtop. -
Would a person tire out with taking 2 types of M.A. at once?
dtstiachi replied to Kamisama's topic in Health and Fitness
There is a guy in my Tai Chi class that is a Black Belt in Karate (forgive me, I don't know what style). He stills goes to Karate class 3 times a week and comes to my Tai Chi class 2 times a week. He said Tai Chi is really helping him in his "hard style" martial arts. -
How many of you keep a training journal or take a notebook to class with you so you can write down the instructions so you will remember what you were taught. My grandmaster requires us to keep a notebook that we bring to class and a journal that we keep at home where we can write about what we learned and what we need to work on. He said that after several years of doing this, that notebook or Journal will be more valuable to you than the price you paid for all of the MA classes you took. I welcome your thoughts and input.

I used to take "Dragon Kenpo" from a Mcdojo (got burned/scammed, not real fun).

Hey everyone, I have heard this almost ad naseum. "Here is how you defend against a knife." ... What do you all teach or hear and in an uncontrolled environment with someone wanting to "really hurt/kill you" what do you think about what you have been taught? (I personally am not satisfied with what I learned in Kenpo or JKD). Thanks for the comments (Senseis, feel free to move this if you so desire)

Show them some repsect Pineapple. (but don't hurt them too much)

The indefensible technique . . .Groan
dtstiachi replied to swdw's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Do you all find this happens much in dojos? My instructor has always told us that "nothing is 100% effective" as there are too many outside variables that we cannot anticipate. -
Try it, It can't hurt (too much)

Tournament...Again!

good luck. -
why would he be going "all out" on you. The goal of sparing isn't to injure your partner. It is to learn how to use your martial arts in a controlled fighting situation. Am I correct?

Doctorate in Martial Arts Philosophy
dtstiachi replied to dtstiachi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
When I go back to the studio I will write down the name of the University and let you know what it is. -
I'm sorry you are running into this Pineapple. Kids today can be so disrespectful. I agree with the others, but them on their rear end a few times and mabey they will learn some respect.

I'm not talkingabout thinking you know something. I'm talking about actually learning and knowing a style with which you can competently defend yourself with. I would much rather know how to fight well with Tai Chi (any style, mine is Yang) than to just try to fight withough knowing any techniques. Yes thinking you know something will get you hurt or killed, but that isn't what I am talking about. I am talking about the advantages of knowing a particular style of martial art that you can use do defend yourself vs. not knowing anything and just swinging away at anything and everything.

if you are concentrating on your mind insted of your opponent, you might have a painful wake-up call.

Uncontrolled fighter
dtstiachi replied to Topic's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
When I used to spar, I was uncontrolled for the first week or two, but then I got myself under control with instruction. Try to talk to your friend about it, if that doesn't work, try "aggresive negociations" -
great post. Thanks for the info

There are too many outside variables to disscus this here. I would suggest doing what it takes to live, but that is only my 2 cents.

Our school states that one can become an assistant instructor when they have between 200-800 hours and have passed certain test given by the Headmaster. I'm not quite there yet, but I will be one day. Hope this helps.

How do you Teach? Back to the Basics?
dtstiachi replied to TMAA's topic in Instructors and School Owners
my teacher drills basics all the time. (sometimes to the point of naseua) We will work on a single movement or even posture in the form for a whole class (sometimes 2). This allows us to focus on getting this technique done right. My teacher is great and clear instructor. I have thoroughly enjoyed learing from him.
