  1. In my dojo, it is minimum 3 years. A lot of people wait longer. It is not how long it takes you to get a black, it is if you can back it up.
  2. Grow stronger feet
  3. I wasn't trying to diss you or anything. I actually meant it in a good way. I was just giving an example of how I would try to gain respect and who I would give my respect to.
  4. I agree also, Muay Thai is a complete and very interesting Martial Art. The thing about Martial arts is in the dojo there are rules, in the tournament there are rules. In real life, there are no rules. If you are in a real situation, do whatever you have to to survive.
  5. I like the Gi for two reasons. A)Tradition B) It is a quite durable thing ideal for lessons I do.
  6. You are welcome.
  7. Thank you very much. That is quite a good site.
  8. I have done kickboxing before. I found it quite modern. What really peaked me on Karate was the hidden power in some techniques. When they first practiced it many years ago, they practiced ippon techniques. Ippon techniques meaning one punch or point. Mas Oyama was the best at ippon techniques. This is kind of graphic but he used to practice on bulls, doing a knife hand block on their horns to break them off or one punching their head to try and kill them. He got it down to perfection. Fortunately he is dead now, and all the animals of the forest are safe. It gave me that hold because their was so much power in techniques that I didn't learn in kickboxing. Maybe it was just my teacher in kickboxing, but I feel that Karate is the best for me. Ken: I love Happy Gilmore, "it's all in the hips" As for the best kick, I have always liked the Sokoto or side kick (Sokoto really means sword edge kick). It is a nice and powerful kick and even in Kumite, when you;ve been hit, you've been hit.
  9. Moobrack and I will talk to Pat.
  10. I quite fortunately also know where the phones go
  11. angiewinter, You can gain respect not be skills, but by the way you treat others and they way you handle yourself under pressure. I know that I would respect an in control white belt than an angry black belt.
  12. This study had to be impartial. It is used for a)funding and fundraising and b) Karate's bid for the Olympics. They need to see howmany clubs their are. It is quite accurate. The term they use for Karate is either Shi-to Ryu, Shotokan, Wado Ryu, or Goju Ryu plus some other minor styles.
  13. When you do your kick, as soon as it has extended, it should snap back and quite frankly hit you in the butt. If you work on that, then your kicks will be faster. Also if you get bands and tie them to a post and your leg and practice kicking, your kicks become stronger and faster.
  14. If you guys want, I could ask Pat to set up a specific place on this site for uploading fight videos. What is your guys take on that.
  15. That only happens if Joe decides to teach others.
  16. Go here please: http://www.wkf.net/html/practitioners2.html#akfpractitioners
  17. If I were teaching a class, and the new student was from another style, I would let them try it out for a while. After that, if they decide to stay, I would see for a time if they deserved, say a black belt. I would then decide with any other teachers whether or not they should be considered for their promotion. That is how my Sensei does it, and it works pretty well.
  18. It is a really strange case and you should consult a physician. My guess is that it does have something to do with adrenaline. What you are describing is an extreme beserker mode. Berseker's were introduced by the Vikings. These guys would go literally insane and throw themselves into battle without any hesitation. Seems like you are a bit of a berserker. I think that if it happens a lot, it could be lethal. I do believe it is some sort of adrenaline rush, but get it checked out. Must help when you are in a submission match, huh?
  19. Bouncing is good, just not up and down. Bounce forward and back. If you can, make your front foot move twice as fast as your back so they can't time you and at least one foot is always on the ground.
  20. Black has always looked good on me Congratulations to everyone on their belts.
  21. When Karate gets in, Canada all the way.

Our tests are on Kata, basics, basic kumite, jyu kumite, and terminology.
  23. A kata expert does each kata every week to remember them.
  24. Shi-to ryu is a mixture of Goju-Ryu and Shorin Ryu. That is why they are similar
  25. 26! That's it. In Shi-to Ryu their are about 50. Trust me, every single one is important. If you study where the kata comes from, then it is important.
