It is true that it wastes energy- I found that out after about 25 minutes of sparring. However, bouncing can be good, it keeps you moving, and keeps your opponent from knowing when you are going to attack. For example, if you are motionless until the attack, you need to be fast. But if you are always moving, they aren't sure when you will attack because you're moving. Hopefully, there was logic in that. Good luck.

I'm taking a drawing and painting class right now, just got done painting a mountain. I love painting landscapes, but I'm bad at drawing.

I would recommend going to Amazon.com and searching around- I've found some pretty good martial arts stuff there. -

Being attacked with a katana, what would you do?
ShotokanKid replied to Myth's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Die Lol. Like everyone else, I would do my best to arm myself (if I can't run away). The person doesn't have to be experienced; one lucky (or unlucky for you) cut and you're a goner. So, here are my steps: 1. Can I run? 2. Can I talk to them? 3. Can I give them what they want? 4. If not, can I make sure other people are safe? 5. Can I distract him? 6. Is there a weapon nearby? 7. Then I'd attack by throwing stuff, and swinging/slashing with my weapon. -
what happened at are academy today
ShotokanKid replied to masterintraining's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Something like that happened a few weeks ago. Some guy walked in and motioned at the instructor (who is 25) and said what degree is he? -He's a third degree -that's it? what rank are you? -I'm a second. -psh. that's nothing. and then he walked out. You just have to be ignorant of people's ignorance. -
Who are your top three favorite fighters in MMA? Mine are: 1) Georges St. Pierre (13-1-0) 2) Matt Hughes (40-5-0) 3) Genki Sudo (14-4-1) and 4th goes to Dean Lister. What about you?

He hugged his guys before the Gracie fight and he dominated that fight. I love GSP. He is my favorite fighter in the UFC.

ShotokanKid replied to Spirit At Choice's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
No problem, hope I helped. I remember a discussion about this earlier- someone said it was probably done by a rival system. -
Love takedowns, particularly stepping behind and sweeping the leg out.

Okay, here's what you're looking for: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7674028043115699716&q=karate -
I think they both have rules I like and don't like. For example, UFC allows elbow ground and pound, but no stomps, knees and kicks to the head of a downed opponent, etc. Pride is opposite. I don't particularly prefer one or the other. I kind of like the Octagon better because I've seen people fall out of the rings in Japan.

I'm glad I failed- it was a good experience. I realized I wasn't in good shape and needed more practice. I passed the real nidan test by the way. -
Do jumprope so you'll have endurance.

Etiquette out side the Dojo?
ShotokanKid replied to Canoe2fish's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I usually shake hands and say osu with a slight bow, but when I get one of the kids that I teach come up and say Hi Senpai Joey, I always give them five and tell them they don't have to call me Senpai outside of the dojo. -

yes, I failed the jr nidan test, so they told me to wait until I was old enough to test for the real nidan. -
I just took my nidan test, here's a video I made the same day as the test. The second kick wasn't that hard, I was just dizzy from the first and tired from doing kumite for a long time. I tried to tell everyone I was fine and just needed a moment, but the doctor there said I had a concussion and told my parents to take me to the emergency room. I got off pretty light compared to the other people: One of our guys is walking with a cane, one messed up his already injured shoulder, a girl had her nose broken (and she didn't even say anything- that's tough) and one of the guys got a bloody nose. And of course, everyone's a bit bruised. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piFnP-odsoY

Heavy Bag (UPDATED- got one for Christmas)
ShotokanKid replied to ShotokanKid's topic in Equipment and Gear
I'm looking more towards working on kicking more powerfully. -
I would like to get a heavy bag but before I do, I would like to know whether or not hitting a heavy bag could stunt your growth. Thanks in advance.

Elbows and Knees- If you were to grab for the groin, and he tries to break the arm, great because he has to release the choke to grab the arm, or release the arm that strengthens the choke and you can spin towards your arm. You might have to wedge your hand between his body and your own for the groin grab. If he's working a choke, he probably wont be using a closed fist. It will probably be open to clasp the other hand. (in which case, you're in deep trouble anyway because it's difficult to break that clasp). Fighting the choke is pretty hard. I've submitted people who weigh 80 pounds more and are 6 inches taller than myself with the choke we're talking about here. And the guy was a wrestler. Once it's locked in, it's extremely difficult to fight it, even if you're significantly stronger and bigger. I didn't want to start an argument with you, elbows and knees. I've seen your other posts and I think you've got a significant amount of knowledge and experience in "real situations". I'm just saying what I feel would work in principle. (Once someone's got the RNC locked in, it gets hard to think... I usually just tap). I'll try some of these out with a training partner.

Real Self Defence Stories
ShotokanKid replied to gateqway's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've never been in a lot of real fights. Someone came up to me when I was in elementary school and said, "you wanna fight?" and attempted to kick me. I grabbed his leg and held it until a lunch monitor came over. In jr. high, (public school) I got picked on a lot. In the locker room, someone grabbed my sweatshirt and threw it in the trash. I went to go grab it and someone blocked my way. I don't know what happened, but the guy started screaming "let go of me, you f*!" I had trapped his wrists. There have been a few other things, like having a bunch of people trying to get me on the ground and kick me, but they couldn't, another time a guy was messing with me so I spun him around and took him down from behind. Haven't had any problems since I started high school at a private school.
