double katana? I have heard of the Musashi system of using a katana and a wakizashi at the same time. Other than that, nothin. -
MA Goofs & Blunders
isshinryu5toforever replied to KickChick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
We had a brown belt come back to our dojo after a layoff of 5 or 6 years I believe. We have a new guy who has experience fighting, but not in martial arts, so he is a good sparrer. Well, the woman that came back used to have the ability to hit almost any target she aimed at whenever you got her upset. Our white belt friend didn't know this. She didn't have a uniform with her, so she just participated in some workout clothes. The new guy had a sparring session with her and grazed the side of her head with a back fist. Apparently it was a little harder than she would have liked. She let out a loud kiya as she proceeded to reverse punch him right in the forehead. The kiya scared him, and the look he got was priceless as this woman who wasn't wearing a uniform knocked him on his butt. Some of the other funny moments have come when people try to say Tatsu Shimabuku when asked who the founder of our style is at a belt testing. -
I am a student at New York University. I work a couple different jobs in the summer. One at a fireworks shop, selling not making since my suitemate likes to make jokes about it (I'm Asian). I work on my uncle's farm sometimes. Hard work, but you have a feeling of accomplishment afterwards. Other than that, I'm just studying for now.

TO HIT AND NOT TO GET HIT ? THIS IS MY QUESTION !
isshinryu5toforever replied to pers's topic in Karate
I don't think anyone ever wants to get hit. -
The Super Bowl was kind of crappy. Neither team really did anything. Good defense, but the offenses are usually much better. I was rooting for the Eagles just because they've never won a Super Bowl before. NFL championship yes, Super Bowl No.

Worst Idea Ever = Beatings
isshinryu5toforever replied to Knifehand007's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Like I said, remind him that if he beats you bad enough, his daughter is going to be the one to nurse you back to health after the parimedics, doctors, and surgeons are done anyways. -
Hook kick

if you're talking about just leaving your leg straight and trying to hit with the heel, then that will never be quick. If you snap it out and back though, you get more power. -

isshinryu5toforever replied to Knifehand007's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If he puts enough of a beating on you, your girlfriend can nurse you back to health. Who knows, maybe he's thought of that and won't beat you down too badly? Or as half of us said, he may just make you appear to be no longer human. -
Where did you nickname came from?
isshinryu5toforever replied to Souldburned's topic in General Chat
I have been doing IsshinRyu since I was 5 and don't really plan on stopping doing martial arts. -

The problem comes if you don't have an all-region DVD player or a Region 3 DVD player. -

I've seen a lot of famous people in NYC. Kate Hudson, Jude Law, Matt Damon, Robert DeNiro, the cast of Will and Grace, the Olsen twin (unfortunately difficult not to when they go to the same college), Matthew Broderick, a couple guys from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Green Day, Good Charlote, and Usher (all free concerts). The closest I guess I came to touching fame in the martial arts world was beating Wayne Dalglish in open hand and weapons forms a few months before he won his 3rd ISKA title in a row.

We have a 2001 Monte Carlo. We used to have an '88 Mazda RX-7 (sold it when I went to college). My dad used to own a Shelby GT 500. He also used to have a Dodge Dart.

How did you get your students?

When I was still running a dojo, I inherrited my students because my sensei moved. After that it was up to word of mouth. -
Most spectacular martial sport.

I've seen some brutal full-contact matches. Those can get pretty good. One of the guys I used to train with actually ring-outted someone with a side kick. -
I get a kick out of 8-year-old black belts at open WTF tournaments that think they can tell me what to do when I'm standing around in street clothes. I've been a black belt as long as they've been alive. On that note, it really does make you feel old doesn't it? No matter how old you really are.

Some people won't get solid and ripped because of genetics. Let's face it, Chris Farley was never going to look like Mark Wahlberg. Sounds like you're doing a lot of lifting though. The only way to makr yourself ripped is to burn off fat and build lean muscle. So lower fat content, slightly lower carbs (no carbs after 5), and up the protein a little. You don't need supplements either, even though a lot of people use them. Just have patience, as long as you keep working, it'll come.

The modern form of sport kickboxing yes 30 years ago. Muay Thai is storied to have been around for 2,000 years. As for the popularity among the masses. I think it's popular enough, you just may not see a large number of people participate where you live. In NYC there are a bunch of people that go to NYSC and Crunch that do kickboxing. I know that back in Minneapolis there was a good group of people too. As far as TV airtime, I don't know. ESPN shows some once in a while. Some people have been talking about the conception of a Martial Arts Television Network. Maybe you should probe the powers that be and see what can happen.
-
Okay so we are talking about airtime. Kickboxing doesn't have anyone who has stood out as an interesting character. At least not to the general public. Boxing has had Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, John L. Sullivan, George Foreman, Muhammad Ali, the list goes on. These men have been in the public eye, they are the stuff that legends are made of. Kickboxing has been relatively humble. You don't see a Mike Tyson type personality in the kickboxing ring. You don't see Don King-type promoters in the kickboxing world either. The paydays aren't inornately massive either. You don't see the heavyweight champ fighting for $12 mil. Your signature is even from a movie about boxing. Boxing has taken the public's attention. They see two men standing toe to toe beating eachother with their fists. That is the American sport of boxing. If you can be a great prizefighter, you got it made. As put in Undisputed, "People love a guy that can fight, a guy that don't take no (poop)." If you know the story of Billy Con, you can see this. Con was a light heavy weight that fought Joe Louis. He almost beat him too. If you search online I bet you can find all the details. The point was that Billy Con took the world's attention, because a little Irishman almost knocked out the man with the worlds hardest right hand. People love a champion, and in the eyes of most Americans the man that can fight is boxing's heavy weight champ.

I actually had a very good grasp on what it meant to achieve the rank. This probably stems from the fact that I tested twice. The first time I was around 10 1/2 and tested for a junior black belt. He was going to make me wait until I was 16, but then the development I went though over that next year was vast in my improvement of the martial mentality as well as my physical ability. So, he allowed me to go through a full adult black belt test. Long and stressful for a kid, but I wanted it. So, the answer yes, I vastly appreciated my black belt when I received it. I actually wrote a short essay on my kind of martial theory, I posted it to the articles forum, but it may be some time before it actually appears. If you want to read it ahead of time, you can e-mail me.

If it's after the 4th of July and before the second week of August (cousin's wedding, then school), then I can almost guarantee my going. If it's before then, work and other commitments are piled up.
