  1. i do both MT and BJJ and ive never been injured like that.
  2. first protect your neck, then address the hooks. eventually just spin around into his guard.
  3. 100 % leather
  4. I don't think anyone ever wants to get hit.
  5. well, if you hit someone really really hard you can break their jaw or whatever... and i guess sometimes you can kill them via brain hemmorage or that type of stuff. doesnt happen a whole lot though.
  6. eventually you learn to punch, essentially, perfectly. after that, combat skills can be improved, but you punch like youre supposed to, and thats the end of it. uh, did i explain that right?
  7. the romans? what? okay, my other post here was funny- no one can dispute that. but the romans? thats just lame.
  8. actually gumbi- i know more than a few fighters who run A LOT and theyve built up such an endurance that they win fights, among other things, largely because of it. if the other guys gassing and youre not, you have a serious advantage. running is good! (especially up hill for that explosive typa stamina.)
  9. i dont but i should
  10. okay- let me just ask directly... in tournaments like the one in that video posted earlier, are the guys hitting full force or do they pull their punches and kicks?
  11. katas originated in china when the opium trade started getting really heavy. this grandmaster of whatever kungfu style it was, was really high and hallucinated that he was fighting people who werent there, and all his students were watching him and thought they had finally discovered his secret at being so good a fighter. when confronted with this, the grandmaster was so embarassed he just went along with what they thought they had discovered, and martial artists have been doing katas ever since.
  12. 9-10 is okay, even to be expected if youve busted your * a lot that day.
  13. im not sure if the acrobatics youre mentioning is what im imagining or not... but if it is, that is, if it looks anything like jackie chans movies, that has nothing to do with reality. yea, you wanna stay moving, and yea, if you can pick up a pipe or pot or osmething and hit someone with it more power to you, but jumping around and in and out of a ladder or a window or something just doesnt work out. ive heard of martial arts schools adding thigns like backflips to the curriculum- do them if you like, theyre kinda cool, but they have nothing to do with fighting.
  14. some people give out black belts like candy, some wait until youre truly a master in the art.
  15. i assume your doctor has given you the green light. if thats true, id guess that youre probably just a little out of shape. happens to all of us if we take 3 years off.
  16. depends on which part. for the front (anterior), military press definitely. for the rest (the main bulk of it) id say either shoulder flyes, or their equivilant on a cable machine. (put the cable handle to the lowest setting on the floor, grab it, and just move hand from your side to 90 degrees out or so- one arm at a time. worked GREAT for me.)
  17. sure its possible, but not if when you fight it looks like youre jackie chan. the key is (aside from not winding up on the ground) to move, take them out quickly, and try not to get surrounded. hard punches to the face (nose or throat or something like that) will stop a lot of people, elbows even moreso, leg kicks- if youre good enough at them- will level unconditioned (for MT) people, kicks to the stomache will stop them dead in their tracks too. then theres always the knees and groin, hehe.... and if youre feeling lucky, or just good at it, a throw or take down that slams them hard into the ground will usually stop someone.
  18. you should! depending on your fitness going into it, itll be tough, or more tough. but stick with it youll love it im sure.
  19. well... if you read around youll probably get an idea. its a sport and a martial art- think boxing with kicking (with the shin) as well as elbows (not allowed everywhere) and knees. it happens to be quite popular because its kicks, knees and elbows are basically the hardest hitting of all martial arts.
  20. im guessing either karate or kung fu. if you think about it, almost everyone has heard of it except people in "corners" of the world- but with a billion people alone in china, theyve all heard of kung fu and karate if nothing else. unless street fighting counts....
  21. you know i have to say, that video clip was less than impressive. are you not allowed to punch full force in these contests? are you allowed to kick full force? they never even turned over their hips when they kicked, never adequetly guarded their bodies from body shots (which ought to be easy if your own heads off limits), never even punched with their bodies (you know, pivoting the back foot and using your body and all that). is that really how kyokushkin guys fight?
  22. ooo, do let us know if you pursue that.
  23. not just that, but sometimes you need to wear shinpads for the other guy. if you have super hard shins and the other guy cant take kicks that well yet, why hit him once and end the session?
