  1. The "sport" of Porring (Shin kicking) was very popular in the mines around the area which I live (Wigan in NW England) and was often used to settle disputes between miners. There are / where two versions. 1. The easy one - for the softies The two combatants stand facing each other on a stone flag (approx 900x600mm) with hands on each others shoulders. On the command of the adjudicator they would proceed to kick the crap out of each others shins - they wore iron shod wooden clogs. The loser was the first to quit by stepping off the flag. 2. The hard one - for tough guys / nutters only. Same basic format - only this time they draw lots to see who goes first. Then they take it in turns to take their best shot at the other guys shin. Yeeeouch! Makes this full contact stick fighting stuff I do look tame!

  3. I'm in England. What's a handgun? LOL! But seriously My Instructor lives in Arkansas - and his JKD Curriculum covers 7 ranges of combat - one of which is firearms training. When I go over there I'm gonna have a play
  4. Hi & welcome you youngster you 36 is not old. Trust me.
  5. This is an easy one - choke him out! This is no big deal - it's not like he's not tapping from an armbar so you break his arm - if he won't tap from a choke then put him to sleep.
  6. Hi Zulu Errr...... What they said
  7. "1) ie dog bites your arm punch it square on the nose. apparently they don't like it" -------- Does anyone? "2) dogs have a weak sturnum. Grab both front legs and pull apart. kills dog. " --------- Nah, it's a myth (or maybe even a mythes) There was an actual documented event in Indonesia where to Silat practitioners where attacked in the fields by a Tiger. They killed it - Unfortunately they both died later from their wounds!
  8. Dead right! If it stops ONE kid from taking that muck then it's worth it.
  9. ......is it just me or does that makes no sense whatsoever?
  10. Yes - I have that too. Very good routine - if you're a full time pro boxer Some useful info in there though.
  11. Coastguard announcement..... Hey - Get yo Mama off the beach - the tide would like to come in
  12. Sounds good Jack. Do you cycle the whole routine? Have you considered mixing up the rotation into maybe upper lower body - or maybe push/pull movements? E.g.. By throwing the cycle out of sync you would be doing muscular endurance training (12-20) for upper body whilst going more for strength with the lower? Just an idea
  13. In my practice of Doce Pares Eskrima I usually do at least one dedicated forms practice session per week - I do each form once - starting with the last & most complex and working my way back to the first form. This takes about 45 Minutes. Other than that I practice with my students as I am teaching them. At the moment I am doinmg quite a lot of them as I have two students going for their 1st Degree Black Belts on March 20th - I think I'm more nervous than they are - LOL!
  14. I plan everything I do in relation to martial arts. I plan my work - then I work my plan!
  15. TKD_McGee --- We're talking about school/class size, not person size!!!!
  16. Is it just me? I find the notion that arts are "combative" or not a very strange one. Martial arts. ....... Martial Arts. At the end of the day it's training method that dictates combative effectiveness, not the art. ALL martial arts can & should be capable of being combative by definition. If your art is not "martial" then call it something else. I've seen sevaral classes in my area that would be better called "Medieval oriental re-enactment" or something similar. I'm not saying this is a bad thing - each to his own. But call it what it is. On a similar theme. I was talking to a student of ours yesterday that had got in trouble at his Tae Kwon do class because during the "self defence" portion of their class, they where defending against a choke and he responded by kicking to the groin, then taking a step back and firing off a fast head kick. He got into trouble because they are not supposed to strike during "self defence" training. WTF!!!!!!! So we have a TKD class, who's BIG strength is that they can kick VERY well, and they have to rely on fancy wrist reversals and half-baked locks for "self defence"????? I know a Thai Boxing club that does a similar thing. Muay Thai self defence should be based on Muay Thai - is that such a strange notion? Guy tried to grab - you slam a leg kick into his thigh and knee him into the nearest shrubbery! Enough rambling for now - got an important appointment with a leg press machine and 350kg of iron. Be back later on wobbly legs
  17. To those of you that train with weights ona regular basis - how often do you change routines? Is there a progression / cyclic approach to this? I find that about 12 weeks suits me, and I move between... 2 way split (3 sets - 8-12 reps) 2 way split (3 sets - 6-10 reps) Full body H.I.T. (1 set)
  18. Hi guys What are we tlaking about here? Best weapon to train with - most fun etc, or best weapon to fight for your life with? Most fun? At the moment I'm going through a big jump up the learning curve with my two handed weapon work, tapado and sibat are the long & short staffs of Eskrima. I'm incorporating ideas from the use of the Jo into what I do - it's proving to be very beneficial. Best weapon to fight with? I'll take a knife. A partially serrated 6" blade will do nicely.
  19. Ok - Now that I can agree with Wing Chun is a great art - and is the foundation on which much of my training is built - I just have a problem when people say ANY art has all the answers.
  20. "Sometimes the brightest light comes from a burning bridge"
  21. "Opening your mind and exploring for yourself." "THUNK!!!" - The sound of AnonyomouseOne hitting the JKD nail squarely on the head!
  22. Yep - I agree 100%
  23. Shaolin - A grappler wearing a Wing Chun uniform? That's a Wing Chun guy vs. another Wing Chun guy trying to be a grappler. That's not what I was talking about.
  24. Hey Joe I didn't say smaller is always better. I said smaller is better. Do you see the difference? It has to do with the word "IS" as opposed to "IS ALWAYS". One speaks of present fact, the other speaks of assumptions about the future.
  25. Yes - size matters. Smaller is better
