Just thought I'd drag this post back out of the depths to see if there are any more Shukokai Practioners out there!
-
Just to let you know - Kev wasn't lying about the pads thing - Shukokai was probably the first Karate Style to use impact pads in training! Just a fact. Don't think his instructor was dissing - but maybe he was! lol
-
I found one by Tommy Morris on Amazon.co.uk that was retailing for over £500!!! I was shocked! If you want a book on Shukokai Kata then try contacting Sensei Stan Knighton via the website: https://www.sku.org.uk
-
Yeah - Tani-Ha Shito-Ryu is Shukokai Karate. It means Way for All and was developed by Sensei Tani and then Sensei Kimura! and now by me!!! lol - (Joking - I am not that naive!)
-
This is quite an interesting topic - but there are different interpretations of some of them - Like TaeKwon Do is also translated to the art of smashing and breaking with the hands and feet! And Karate had the meaning changed to mean what it does apparently (I got confused when I was told that!) But anyway: Shukokai - Way for All Chikara - Strength and Power
-
I know this is a relatvely old topic but....NO - flips are not part of a curriculum and not that many black belts learn them! I want to though - just cos it'd be cool! hehe
-
I don't use a traditional stance when I spar now - I am quite light on my feet in my stance - weight quite evenly distributed but I have a tendancy to go back to the rear leg for balance. But I like to kick from the back foot a lot.....bizarre - Something I might end up thinking about more now!
-
Try Krav Maga!!! I'd love to try that - I bought me a book on it - but even an experienced Karate-Ka can only learn so much Krav Maga from a book!!!!

Traditionalism verses Reality-Based Fighting
username9 replied to NineTailedFox's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well the fact is that originally the martial arts were reality-based! It is the fact that most of them have been "watered-down" over the centuries and the "reality based" systems are coming full circle to what the arts were meant to be originally! That's my opinion anyway!! -
Language in the dojang
username9 replied to Sphintai's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
In my karate Lessons they throw Japanese at you and help you along with the meanings - we usually count in Japanese. Similar thing happened when I did TaeKwon Do - but in Korean - unsuprisingly! hehe They tought us Korean as they went along. In my Ju jitsu class I am the only one who knows it in Japanese I think! lol -
What's brown and sticky?? A stick! (Oh dear - sorry!) What do you call a deer with no eyes? No Idea! (So bad!!) Check out my Donkey joke in this forum for my best joke!
-
Continue Kiaia for at least 5minutes and then turn to back, repeat kick and kiaia - again holding for at least 5minutes!

What do you call a donkey with three legs?? A Wonkey Donkey! What do you call a donkey with three legs and one eye? A Winkey Wonkey Donkey!! What do you call a donkey with three legs and one eye who plays the guitar?? A Winky Wonkey Honky Tonkey Donkey!!! What do you call a donkey with three legs and one eye who plays the guitar and who can also play the piano?? A Winky Wonkey Honky Tonkey Plinky Plonkey Donkey!!! What do you call a donkey with three legs and one eye who plays guitar and who can also play the piano who joined a religious sect??? A Winky Wonkey Honky Tonkey Plinky Plonkey Monk-ey Donkey!!! (Ok - I'm getting desperate now!)

HeHe - Sounds like a priest we used to have!

It was something to do with constricting the flow of the life energy down the conception vessels! Which run over the skull and down the front and back! He was going on about all this stuff that just confused me a little - cos a little later he started going on about his fire melts metal and water fights fire and stuff again - and I was lost!

I have read a few bits about Muay Thai and watched some documentaries on this style - It is very dominant. It is also a much more rounded style than many peolple believe. Look into this style more and you find such a rich background to it and with the support of the "sister style" Muay Boran, which deals with grappling, there is a very close to complete fighting system! Read some of the interviews conducted with Master Sken - they are quite interesting!
-
I watched it last night and I have to say - I am a little under-whelmed?! But I think I should have watched it when I was paying more attention perhaps - I was a little tired and distracted. Having said this I still think it is a beautifully shot film! And the fight scenes are definitely interesting. I will resevre proper judgement till I have watched it again! hehe
-
ramymensa said it best I think. As far as preparing yourself as best you can I think one should get to a decent grade in a well respected style...then look into broadening your horizons because no style teaches everything you might need to know....howevere if it teaches you everything you WANT to know....then fine!

I always thought it was 10th Dan....but I guess either I am wrong or people have been told some porky-pies! (Lies)
-
Ok - the basic and clear answer is it varies from Dojo to Dojo - Case in point....ME! When I started I was 7 years olkd - and the local instructor wouldn't take kids under 10, but one of his students had a club near by who takes kids as young as 6 if they can concentrate! - Same Style, Different Clubs, Different Age Limits!

Elvis died taking a dump - death can happen at any time in any way for any reason. Sparring is no more dangerous than any other sport really - as long as you are just sparring!!

Yeah - Just start slapping them on the cheek and shouting "Who's ur Daddy!?" lol -
I think so June1 ! Okay - here are a couple of my fave "kneeslapper" jokes! A man walks into a bar.....ouch! ________________________________ Two fish are in a tank. One says to the other "do you know how to drive this thing?" ________________________________ A fire has reportedly burned down George Dubya's library. Both books are ruined and he'd only finished colouring one. _______________________________ I must be having a bad day - I can;t think of any more!

Well I have Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D) which means that I only concentrate on stuff I am interested in - and I am interested in Martial Arts - so I am usually focussing....but on the flipside of this when I am in an "Advanced Networks, Security and Forensic techniques lecture at uni I am usually thinking about the lesson from Ju Jitsu I had the night before. The only time I can really fit in to the original question is when my instructor starts talking about fire, wood and water points and all that business. I am not disrespecting it but it sounds so wierd that I have often just thought to myself.... "Is he making this sh*t up???" Then he does it on someone and they damn near pass out and I usually decide that it isn;t worth asking - just go with it! lol
