I find it hard to find a decent Ju Jitsu Gi. I use my heavy weight karate Gi - no problems YET! I want one of the Adidas JJ MACHADO Gi's - but i dunno enough about them to shell out for one! Let me know if you find anything out ppl! But back on topic - I couldn't even get one from a Martial Arts shop - he just dismissed me with the comment "Most ppl use a Judo Gi" and my reply was - "I don't want a Judo Gi - I want a JU JISTU GI! (*!)"

I didn't get chance to search through this whole thread but one interesting MA I saw a demonstration of once was: Viet Vo Dao It's a Vietnamese arts which looked like a cross between TaeKwon Do, Ju Jitsu and Proffessional Wrestling! lol I don't know much about it but I'd love to know more - if anyone finds more PLEASE PLEASE tell me by PM. There is a cookie in it for you if you do! lol

Training in Jiu-jitsu
username9 replied to Oa2k's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Ju jItsu will teach you real life situations and how to deal with them. It will also teach you to counter moves more than Karate does, It may also teach you how to counter the counters! lol As for Kata - they are few and far between and it depends on the style. Like some of these guys have said - Ju Jitsu teaches grappling - locks, throws ,chokes etc. It is also ver yadaptive usually and moves are incorporated if they work! It's all good! -
BJJ Techniques
username9 replied to Username's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Same here - although I haven't done Brazilian - I have done Ju Jitsu. The students are very respectful of one another - nobody likes losing a good training partner - so nobody takes advantage of the beginners. -
I personally feel that points fighting is crap - Refs are unreliable and it does my head in! So there!
-
Thnax for the feedback guys. I did WTF TKD and only got to do some of the Taeguk Patterns - I found them boring personally. But then again - at the time I wasn't really into patterns. I just wanted to do some fancy hollywood kicks! lol

What is Real Jujitsu?
username9 replied to Shane's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I think of Ju Jitsu in a similar way. The style I do is a Mongrel Style - if something works then it is included. But the main benefit I get from Ju Jitsu is the realistic situations and self-defence side of things. As for it developing ....what do you think I think? hehe -
best book for grappling
username9 replied to dear john's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I have just bought "Submission Fighting Techniques" from Amazon - but I forget the name of the author. It is a blue book if that helps! I also have "Inside the Lion's Den" Ken Shamrocks book. If he interests you it is an excellent book - It has his life story up to him joining WWF and then his training techniques. -
It might not be about Leaving - I never left my club but I train in other things. IMHO - Ju Jitsu would be good to try. U have a great striking background but I'm guessing your grappling is limited - That is what I found aftyer about 9 or 10 years of Shukoki Karate. Ju Jitsu is an excellent compliment to Karate.
-
I haven't started my own system , but I do teach Self-Defence sometimes and then I teach my version of things. But I don't teach it as a system so much as methods of defence! You really should have been doing M.A's for years and have (IMHO) experience in a range of arts. Interesting topic!

Well done on getting Shodan at 13 (I was 14 for a month when I got mine! hehe) I know how hard it can be. But I wanted to ask - do you have age restrictions on further dans? Because I was only just able to grade for my Nidan because u had to be 16 - and I had just turned 16 and was in the first week of my GCSE's! HAHA. I had my priorities right - I was training the night before my Germal Speaking exam! lol
-
I always liked Pidan Godan. Dunno why really! hehe I also like Jiin and Niseishi. But my fave has probably got to be Neipapo. And the funny thing is - that isn't even a shukokai kata! Oh Well. Has anyone done any TaeKwon Do as well as karate? And did you find the patterns boring?
-
TOTALLY AGREE. But it also looks like u might need to put a little extra flexibility training. Look on the Internet for details of PNF stretching!
-
Leave the young lad alone. Just because he is 13 doesn't mean he won't create a decent Kata. It will take years to hone into somethine "real" granted but he's 13!! He has plenty of time to do that! I was just turned 14 when I got my Shodan but it didn't mean I was any less competent than someone else just because they were older than me! Jeez! Broaden your ideas! EVOLUTION!!!

Kickboxing is basically sport Karate! So make sure you find a decent Karate Club that focuses on all aspects of Karate - not just sport...cos that will basically be a kickboxing club! Maybe even think about doing Ju Jitsu either as well as, or instead of Karate for selfdefence! - Just my 2 penneth!
-
Damn right. "Original Karate" would contain all that you need and was developed as a complete system of fighting. Shame it gets watered down so much. This is why I again recommend Sensei Iain Abernethy. he kicks * and brings Karate back into the realistic world....if you get what I mean?!
-
WHAT IS THAT SUPOSED TO MEAN? And Like i say - I have a mental block on it- that's all. We refer to it as 2nd Dan usually.
-
I am 2nd Dan. I should be third but I trained in other stuff and decided I don't care about grades any more....similar to yourself. I BELIEVE the coloured-belt systems came from the fact that all belts were white, then as training went on - the belts did not get washed. And hence dirtier belts belonged to people who had trained longer. The darker the belt, the better the Karate-Ka. I may be wrong but it fits - and I know it is not the case for TaeKwon Do. As for our style being well respected - that is so true because a Black Belt is so tough to get in comparison with some styles apparently! R u SKU or SKF or what?
-
What's the difference between that and Ki/Chi? Referenceing Star Wars and the instructor's voice changes to OBI-One. Yeah - I meant Star Wars. Plus: You Might be in a McDojo if: - Your Instructor sits you down to watch a training video....and it turns out to be Power Rangers
-
Name: Kevin Style(s): Shukokai Karate (SKU) WTF TaeKwon Do Enso Ryu Ju Jitsu Grades: 2nd Dan (Always get confused - is that Nidan? I have a mental block on that!) in Karate. 5th Kup in TKD 6th Kyu in Ju Jitsu Pet's names: Charlie and Harvey - both Hamsters - both not ACTUALLY mine!
-
This might be an old forum now but If it was SKU Shukokai - you won't find any down south. All the clubs are listed on the website: http://www.sku.org.uk Shukokai has higher stances and is indeed based from Shito Ryu. Sensei Tani took it and evovled it. Shukokai is based on dynamic moves and plyometric power! It is very much based on striking and unfortunately there is litte or no grappling being taught.
-
I've posted 2 posts by accident - the one below has more in it so I editedthis one - sneaky huh. And it reminds me- what did u do in the end - change styles?? and if so - to what?
-
Shukokai Karate Union (SKU) QUEST - which is WTF style TaeKwon Do Goshin Ryu Ju Jitsu (I'm actually confused myself at this association - is it one or is it a different club) - anyway - it is quality stuff!
-
hehe- nice one Rhino. I am always tempted to do similar to TKD players. And When i go back to my Karate Casses I am used to a more wholistic style of sparring now. lol But I think we did a good thing Rhino - if these guys were more respectful then we wouldn't have to show them for the gits that they are! That is what I reckon anyway!
