Unfortunately not enough. We are neither sport orientated or relism related - it's just All aspects of Karate. I keep trying to bring it to the self-defence side of things! But it is like I say....just Karate for the sake of doing it sometimes. Everyone is too obsessed with grading at my club. That is Why I got bored and did other styles.

I agree tha tstances are the key - just not any set stances! I think a natural stance is your best bet. However you feel comfortable to launch any strike you need. Set STances are important for the beginner because they give you strangth training , but as yuo get more experience I think they count less. Evolve....!

I do Shukokai and find that a strong Zenkutsu Dachi involves keeping the front foot straight ahead, back foot at about 45 degrees and three fistwidth's between the kness (if you kneel whilst in ur stance - then u can try this). But the main thing about Shukokai Stances are that they are much more upright that Shotokan or Shito-Ryu (as Shukokai is n evolved form of Shito Ryu). Upright stances allow for more dynamic movements. Shotokan stances are VERY deep n comparison. maybe try "standng up" just a little more.

What styles cross over the belt on the back?
username9 replied to P.A.L's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
IF we all look back at my post I said that my instructor didn't have a clue it was an insult. I believe it came from the old traditions that it was an insult. Like 99% of tradition...it has ben lost in the western version of things. Not that I'm a traditionalist. and to answer PAL's question - I'm not particularly bothered if ppl I teach tie it crossed - as long as it is tied somewhere like how it is meant to be- IF I open my own club, I will teach how to do it right. Until then - it's not my problem! -
oh - and I forgot: You Might be in a McDojo if: - Your Instructor learned from "Grand Master Dave". - Your Instructor continually refers to using "the force".
-
You might be a redneck if.....Foxworthy Voice> Sorry - I mean you might be in a McDojo IF: - A single lesson costs more than a 36" Wide Screen TV - The club has a mascot called "Nigel the Ninja" - The Instructor has a white stripe through his black belt as in Go-Kan-Ryu (or No-Can-Do as I like to call it). They are not real black belts. - Your Gi has more than 2 colours on it. - Your Instructor has to get out his "My First Big-Book of Martial Arts" when you ask to learn some bunkai. - Your Instructor has a gold belt on!
-
The Adidas JJ Machado Gi - I wanna know more about it - hehe. has anyone got one? and if so are they any good? and more importantly to me - anywhere I can get one cheap? Preferably in the UK?! Cheers guys in advance for any replies!

I heard that she studied WTF TaeKwon Do. The head of my old TKD organisation certainly thought so - and I didn't wanna burst his bubble by telling him I didn't think she did! he was a kick-* 5th Dan. but he seemed proud of that fact. In conclusion (from me at least). I reckon she has a stunt double but I hear from many sources that she has trained in either Kick boxing or TKD!

I love the tekken series. And Hwoarang does a pretty good TaeKwon Do style in the latest games. I like the way tekken is ALMOST realistic but just has that cool over-the-top edge to keep it interesting! I love the Tekken Series full stop. lol -

Ju-jitsu vs. Karate
username9 replied to Sky's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I can't be bothered reading all the posts to this but I will give you my opinion - it's not a matter of Karate vs Ju Jitsu. Like someone said - they are both generic terms. But they aim to do different things. The original (and I mean ORIGINAL) concepts behind Karate included all elements of fighting anyway - but these have been lost. If you look hard enough for them you can find throws and locks etc in Karate - especially in Kata. Check out Ian Abernathy's work for this: https://www.ianabernathy.com (I hope I spelt it right - if not use the search on here for Bunkai - someone else has it on there!) Basically I advise people to train in both nowadays - and also Wado Ryu is not a bad idea if you only wanna join one club! -
Erm. Striking: Shukokai Karate, WTF Taekwon Do Trapping: N/A- Not into Trapping Stand-up Grappling/Ground Grappling....any grappling - Enso Ryu Ju Jitsu - it is pretty much a mongrel art that is based on evolving traditional Ju jitsu- so we take elements of Wrestling, Judo, Aikido Submission fighting and add them into our Ju Jitsu. Everything else - I also study a lot from books and videos - I know it isn't Ideal but I have been doing MA's for 13 years - and i am only 20 so Ican teach myself SOME stuff from books! Anyway - I am always evolving my own style of fighting - not that I teach it or anything - I mean my own way of getting the job done! I'm very much into hybrid training.

Okey Dokey - I live in England.....blows that one out of the water. LOL Rhino made another good point - never get arrogant as you go through the grades - I was the white belt he described once - the one who already knows a thing or 2! I was a little cheeky when I turned up to a ju Jitsu lesson in the first couple of weeks of me joining - one of the members thought I was a total novice until I countered his attempt to show off! lol - But that's enough of my own showing-off! Have fun!

BUZZWORD OF THE MOMENT: McDojo. Stop worrying - the main thing is that YOU are happy with your training. The website looks very commercial and well presented (but I am an Internet Computing Student - so maybe I am over-analysing). But if you are not sure how good ur sensei is , visit other local Dojo's to watch - u'll soon see if you are missing out!

What styles cross over the belt on the back?
username9 replied to P.A.L's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was always taught to "put it on so u don't fall over it". Because I was a dead skinny 7 year old when I started. But as I got oder I learned the "single strap" way of doing it and just thought it looked and felt better. I have since been told that it is actually meant to be an insult to your instructor to have it crossed at the back - but as I had to tell my instructor that this was the case - I don't think he was too bothered. My pet hate is people that can't tie their belt in any other way than it falling off every 20 seconds - that winds me up - scruffy little ****'s! i think a half-decent appearance is a sign of respect for the people you train with! -
As far as I know this is roughly true - if anyone knows better then please do enlighten us: Capoiera is a Brazilian martial art but was "invented" by african slaves. It was a martial art based on striking but had to be disguised as a dance so their masters did not catch on to what was happening. The aim is not to "beat-up" your opponent but to "out-do" him/her y pulling off the most spectacular moves and by dominating the space. it is full of acrobatic moves including flips and somersaults. The music is there to keep a beat going to which the players will move to. they assume the stance which is like a dance from one side to the other and it's name escapes me - but anyway. Then the fun starts. Like I say - it's non-aggressive but IF used as a fighting art it can be devastating. Hope that has shed a little light on the subject. Always interesting to find where Martial Arts originate from. ju Jitsu originally came from India If Iam not mistaken!!!!.....but that is for another day!

Does any one practice BunKai Kumite
username9 replied to longarm25's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sensei Abernathy is awesome for Kata Bunkai / Applications. I have his book on Karate's Grappling Methods and I will check out the e-book link when I get back to my broadband and not this dial - up stuff. I reckon as long as ur not paying money out then ur not losing anything Cathal. All u will get is a newsletter which you can un-subscribe from. But I know the quality of Sensi abernathy's stuff so I will be signing up ASAP. Kata Bunkai used to be part of our Syllabus in Shukokai Karate but it was phased out - At the time I thought this ewas a good thing because the applications were pants! I like to add my own now - it's more fun and a challenge! -
"Honorary" Rank Certificates
username9 replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I just wanna clear something up with you Shorinryu Sensei . I didn't mean you shouldn't have saccepted the honorary rank - u weren't to know. I was trying to agree with what u did by not giving him a rank back, just for the sake of it! Kudos to you good sir! Oh Dear - sounds like I am coming on to you or something - lol I'm not! -
I only joined this forum a day or so ago but McDojo is the same as a Mickey-Mouse Dojo. One that is too commercialised and doesn't stick to old traditions. it is run as a business and not a school . At least that is how I see it!

how do you count to 10 in korean
username9 replied to jctkd's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
This is pretty much how I was taught it. But it is about the phonetics really. And if you are interested in Japanese (which might seem strange in a korean forum but: Ichi Ni San Shi Go Roku Shishi Hachi Ku Ju (I think!) -
Hello Good Sir!! I believe in Scotland it is more the Shukaokai Karate Federation? I am involved n the Shukokai Karate Union. Am I right in thinking there is a 10th Dan in Scotland somewhere in Shukokai Karate Fed??
