difference between sparring and real fighting
47MartialMan replied to dear john's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Since Kano whupped up on the Jiujitsu folks, it hasn't really been a valid argument any how. Yeah, wasnt that amazing. Following Kano's and Morhei's examples to pull away from "tradition" -
Same here, As well as other terms for the other practitioners of the same school. Yes, si gong (shi gong) can be translated to grandfather. Hence, in a Chinese school, on the heirarchy of a family structure. This is where DM culd be saying that there isn't really a term or character for "master" If I can state, that actually si (shi) the sound like a "sh" or "zh" can translate itself as teacher. In Mandarin, the translation could be many-temple-monastery,four, to die, to resemble....fu, taken on many others, louh, or old. Now, I will happily receive other info on this because my experience is restricted to Mandarin with conflict between PinYin and WadeGiles. DM, this is where (in one of many) I am curious about your post.

Self defense laws
47MartialMan replied to bigpopparob2000's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
But you said: "a hand that touches me (you) so slightly"......... All I am saying that the defense has a degree of force per whatever the attack. Esp in a US court of law. For, instance, you would not want to do a arm break, that results in a servere physical disorder for the opponeent, just because he went to slightly push you. Or better yet, if you have a fight with someone in a restaurant, etc., and the manager askes you to leave, and you don'y acknoweldge or have not heard what he said. So he places a hand on you to get your attention. Or a police officer trying to break you up in fight, that he may have to lay a hand on you (not in a attacking way) I totally agree: Unless sparring, each movement should be made with full commitment. If a person means me harm, I harm the person. If my life can be in danger at any moment, I will be sure that the threat has ended in it's totality. But if it is a relative or dear friend, I should have enough skills to render his attack without serverely harming them. -
Xingyi
47MartialMan replied to blackmantis's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Sorry, Again do not take to offence. I am a little confused on your post: I don't know their translations or history/hierarchy. I do have an instructor and I know we get the info from a couple of different sources. Some directly from china others from xingyi instructors here. So I don't know the exact lineage. Their philosophy for fighting is to be aggresive and to stay on the offensive. Thus is not a conclusion of mine, but a misinterpretation? I mean, you do not know the translation of XingYi? Or you know it, but can't remember? And you are so right about: See my point is even if a teacher was not legit he could still have a lot of knowledge about lineages and such. If I were a newcomer how could i tell? Even if I researched it on the web, that wouldn't help. I'd have to learn proper Xingyi in order to spot the fake. People can fill your head with great theory all they want but if they can't do it then they can't teach it. -
Well, how can it be strictly GoJu, if masters there have trained in other styels?

Chi-I-Do
47MartialMan replied to JKDkid2's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Actually it is the other way around, TKD, came from TSD (and others). According to my Korean master and my research, TSD came before TKD and it is practiced much different. To sum up history, the Korean Gov wanted a national sport. Other countries had theirs, China-gymnastics-etc., US, Baseball, etc., Japan-Sumo, Judo, etc. In the mid 1950's, there was a conference of Korea's Chung Do Kwan masters. These masters combined their methods and organized a structure under the influence, and for the acceptance of, Korean Gen Hong Hi Choi. (I think this was his name). Tang Soo Do, is not centuries old either. It was pre TKD. Develpoed in the 1930's by a Korean master Hwang Kee (if I am not mistaken). Now, according my Korean master, whom is now retired (he is 65), most of the Korean culture was wiped out resulting from the Japanese invasion WWII. He disputes the claims of taekyon (from which TKD derived its name) and the three kingdom era as Korea's martial art birthplace. His explanation, as I have written in my journals: The old arts of Soo Bahk Do, Sado Mu Soo, Kong Jong Mu Sool were heavily influenced by Buldo Mu Sool (Buddhist Temple Art) Hmmn, it would seem much martial art roots going back to China and Buddhism. And where is Buddhist roots going back to? My journals (diaries) are volumes of notebooks of my experiences in martial arts, martial art learning and instruction. Forced upon me when I was 10, from my mother in an attempt to improve my reading/writing skills. She thought I maybe motivated by something that I enjoyed. She was right. And I enjoy re-reading my journals and marvel of their transitions of my juvenile to adulthood as reflected in the writings. -
Well as long as he taught you something useful adds to your skill.

Nah, not 20, maybe 3-5, shots are made quickly and few in order to get out of the area before police arrive.

Nah, forget the stabbing. I have spoken to many police officers and EMT around Ghettos. Hardly anyone will use a knife to mug anymore. Stabbings, statisically, are done to people from people, whom know each other.

Sure does. No offense intended: But how does one get to be a certified in Muay Thai Instructor? For lineage, what is his name?

The result, TKD Katas emulate Japanese (Shotokan) with the addition of some high kicks. Actually, per your statement, it is the other way around, Tang So Do, pays homage to Chinese systems and flowing movement. Look well into Shtokans katas and compare them TKD. To shake the Japanese influence, other TKD organizations were created and new katas were introduced. My TKD Korean instructor has shed light of this to me. In fact, he, and many, are trying to dis-associate with TKD aktogether. Showing that they teach Hapkido exclusively. My Korean TKD instructor has a new name for his school. I think it is Hamudo, or something like that. Kuk Sol Won and Tang So Do, have a different name thus having a different identity, not by association. At lasty, I am not trying to bash TKD. -

Xingyi
47MartialMan replied to blackmantis's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
The outcome of fighting does not mean that it is true Xingyi. Legit per lineage, has nothing to do with how well someone fights. I seen brawlers fight, if one was to claim they know/teach Xingyi, how would one (per newcomer) know if that is legit. Now, dont get me wrong, I mean no offence. But you don't strike me as knowing all about Xingyi. Most instructors/masters, per system such as this, will have their student learn about the system, not just a fighting aspect. Therefore, your instructor has either: A.) Not taught you and had you had not leared this. B.) He, himself, doesn't know. A thorough check is needed. Caveat Emptor -
