47MartialMan replied to Chris Mckechnie's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Sometimes board breaking, or other, fuels some egos. I do think they (breaking) have their place. -

Hmmn, any sites on Ishin Ryu Jiu Jitsu history/lineage? Speaking of, what is the correct spelling-Jiu Jitsu or Ju Jitsu? I thought the ancient of these, if I can recall, Tenjin,Takenouchi, Soushitsu, Sekiguchi, the famous Kito, and the famous Takeda family. Hmmn, did I leave out any? I thought there was a Ishin Ryu Karate system also?

Great. But no belt, is that another method to get compensation for another test? -

Whats your favourite stance , Why?
47MartialMan replied to Matousek's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
How fast he comes in... so you only do it from kicking range or so? No, any range. But the shorter the range, the lower the arsenal. And the shorter the range, the better the timing and speed is deemed neccesary. In my teens, and against my instructor's wishes, (his wife convinced him to allow me to) I went to a tournament and participated. That stance, not to boast, was wiping out every challenger. But all good things must come to an end and I got disqualified for an improper technique during the finals. One can not imagine the advantage of it. It has to be practiced diligently and it was grueling to do so. -

A lot of Taditional Chinese Family systems do not have ranking. One system that I had studied has ony 3 ranks (actually four if you count the highest honor) Black-In darkness, no "seeing" Green-Jade, having prosperity, "some sight" White-In lightness, having "sight" Yellow-Reserved for instructors, path of "sight" Yeah, I know alot of chinese systems don't have ranking. What's odd to me is the system where white and yellow are the highest. What is it? A 125 year old (or a little more) "ga" Chinese system that you haven't heard of. They had only adapted this ranking system in the past 30 years. To practice, is by referal only. -
Elevate your feet on a chair. Balance something heavy, (not too heavy) on the upper back. Now try the pushups with the palms, as normal. Now try the pushups on the knuckes four then two. Now try the pushups lifting all fingers but the thumbs off the floor. Now try the pushups with the fingers on the floor and not the palm. Now try the pushups with the "back of the hands" Remove the chair, and use a low platform to put your hands on (reverse elevation) Now with any of these spread the arms and cock the hands in different directions. Now lastly, after many weeks/months, put a box of sand down. Not too thick of a layer. Place your hands in that.

I weary of anyone having to state they teach Shaolin Kung Fu -
Agreed, but I normally do not have to threaten to take belts away. My awards to my juvenile students go beyond belts. We arrange gatherings to movies, picnics, special events (car shows, dance shows-for girls, etc.). If parents could not afford to continue, if the kid was worth it, I would make special arrangements. My expertise in kid-handling was very well learned from my wife. She ran a large daycare center many years before and after we were married. She had to get many specialized certifications in accordance with local and state laws. No, my juveniles are not soldiers, they are kids. If I keep the fun in it, they stay focused. I agree, I keep juvenile classes to a minimum of participants. And the MOST satisfaction I received, is when these kids grew up, graduated high school, graduated college, or some in the arm forces or individual careers. Some that continue to contact me, at least on holidays. In all, it makes me feel old, but very proud.

Tae Kwon Do vs Karate.
47MartialMan replied to Jerome's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I would have asked. Knowing about him, his qualifications, or at least, his culture, would be on my list of learning as well as physical methods. -
TKD=Tae Kwon Do

So, he is going to use a kick, or you are saying that metaphorically?
