Don't go overboard. Fine sand. No rocks, pebbles or other material. Anything that does damage to hinder the workout is not good.

Its ok JKD man, posts are taken from different perspectives. Every author has a different writing style thus the conveyance is misconstrued. DM's last post, per two above yours, pretty much sums up "why" a instructor is needed in the first place. It does not matter on the style/system. Can one grab a philosophy without being taught the fundamentals? If I am not mistaken (correct me DM), the instructor has to be the foundation or the base to start you on your path. The same as anyone that taught you how to read, write, dress, drive, etc. Someone should be there to teach the basics, help you correct certain mistakes. Then, through learned ability, you form yourself.

But, things written and interviews can be biased or not "completely" true? Whom among us, knows the complete truth? So, can we state there is an absolute right? -

Makiwara, easy to fabricate...and you can fabricate them on difficulty levels also. -
you have to get certified under someone. Once again, this really means nothing to anyone, other than the organization that certifies you. It shows that you have some experience, which counts for something, but other than that, it's not really significant. For example, if I go to adjarn chai, he will certify me to teach under the USMTA, which is his organization. you must progress through the levels - level 1,2,3, 4 assistant instructor, etc. He has requirements obth in knowledge and physical ability that he will test you on. But some recognition is better than none. How then, can you separate book/video instructors from those that put in time and effort with a live one via a organization? How do you separate McDojo instructors if not looking at credentials, of some type? Hmmnnnn
