It depends on how you spar and the purpose(s) for your spar. In my days, sparring was without pads and a "cooking timer" was set. The combatants did not hear the timer. It was there for the instructor to end the match so that other matches could take place. And, yeah, if you fell to the ground, you had best be able to get or defend from there. Many of such resulted in contusions and sanguinary. Nowadays, this method could be liable for legalities.

are real fights necessary for becoming a good fighter?

I have to agree with delta on will, intent, and skill. But aren't there those that can do this naturally, without much "formal" training? -

Funny you shall mention this. One sysyem that I had studied, a instructor candiate would be "set-up" for a surreal conmfrontation. It wasn't done all of the tome, just to practitioners at a certain level. -
What Percentage Make it to Black Belt?
47MartialMan replied to TMAA's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have to agree with WW, and some others. The pressure of a school to award them, has it to chage a higher test fee. Perhaps a final compensation knowing that the student has a high perecentage of dropping? Some say that the high test fee fo BB is due to the length and material of the test though. -
Attack them with a grin...
47MartialMan replied to Melody's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah, a couple of fights were instigated from smiling. Also, I had seen many times over, in sparring, the "smilee", loses his smile once someone, the opponent, has detemination to come in hard and strong. -
But, whoa, if a judge DOES know the form. What a "price" to pay

How about Gong Fu? -
No, I do not fight tourneys. In my earlier youth, I went a only a few. Got dis-qualified many times. It was hard from my previous training to break old habits and become "regulated" However, I prepare my young juvenile students that desire it.

Yeah, they are hard to find. A lot of those are not listed-commercially -
I mean, people get dans annually like grades in a scholastic system, i.e K-5th (grammer school) 6-8th grade (middle school) 9-12 (high school) They get a dan, level, in resembelance of educational schools.

DLopez Sorry, I meant 60's-70's. In the 70's, we as teenagers, had 60's cars racing, get it? And did you know racecar spelled backwards is still racecar?

Maybe you are not understanding the root of the situation.

The Martial Athlete vs. the Martial Artist
47MartialMan replied to Hanzou's topic in Health and Fitness
Respectfully, the idiot who started this forum is not worthy to even talk on here Respectfully and idiot use in the same context? I like it. Anyway, I wont go as far as name calling, I hope. But perhaps he makes a statement from the only experince that he knows. Therefore he had posted it to see what others had to say. Was he looking to get bashed? And, now is thus one reason why I am a liitle shy about my perosonal experiences and info. -
Maybe a 12th degree, oer grade levels as in a American scholastic system?
-
Nah, I have no arguement. Just that I had not yet, as I had described, seen a grappler take a hit from a strong striker. Yet, is my key word. And yeah, as I had stated, a arsenal is beneficial. And yeah, I had seen pure strikers. People whom, not by my agreement, rely only on their fists. And yes, it is a rarity to find a "purist"

Yeah, I did say Europe or other countries, meaning other than "European" ones. Ok, I wonder if there are any mcDojos in other countries, outside of the U.S.? Hows that?

Difference in Korea and The US
47MartialMan replied to Carnage's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I guess when speaking of Korea/MA, it is a general concensus that it is SK. -
Really. That is very interesting. Do you have any links? I was once heavily ridiculed for having a non-profit school.
-
I had thought, on occasion, that many (not all) Korean forms were influenced from Japanese ones.
-
Well, martial arts is not the only thing that "sells out". I ownder if they are any McDojos in Europe or other countries?
-
Yeah, but i guess it depends on where are you and the other "starer". Where I am from, staring would have you staring at the business end of a firearm. or must worse, a bullet causing you to stare at forever darkness.
