Oh, Never say Never. I've met and train with real tough Shotokan Karate black belts that were involved in pretty ugly scenarios in the street and they use there skills for Real.

Should Kicks ever go higher than your own waist level?
Karateka_latino replied to Sasori_Te's topic in Karate
My former Instructor a TKD black Belt DID used high kicks in REAL life confrontations without any problems. I think we should be able to put our feet wherever we want; low, middle, high, etc... we have to be able to kick Anywhere if we Want to. -

Chuck Norris - Which art?
Karateka_latino replied to DokterVet's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Back in the 60's, KARATE was a generic name for all martial arts. There wasn't school of shotokan, TKD, Goju ryu, etc... They were ALL called KARATE no matter the particular style. Even Hapkido grandmaster Bon Soo Han had to open his first school in U.S.A. under the name Karate. lol Later, TKD and TSD were called "Korean Karate". Now about Norris.. He DID trained Karate with, i think, Fumio Demura and others. -
Martial Arts in the WWE
Karateka_latino replied to Black Dragon's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
From what i read, RVD knows some kickboxing. but he's mostly Acrobatics than anything. A former WWE star, Steve Blackman was a legit 3rd degree Black belt in Karate, knew Submission Wrestling and Kobudo. He was even feature in the cover of "Inside Kung Fu" magazine. Sean Waltman aka X-Pac is also martial artist, Judo and TKD black belt. Tazz is a 3rd degree Judo Black Belt and he used Judo holds in many of his matches. Eric Bischoff knows Karate, he's student of former WCW superstar Ernest "the Cat" Miller who was a Karate instructor before going into Pro-wrestling. -

I've heard that Pro-Boxers runs All the miles they need at the same time. And the rest of the time they used it to do other exercises. When i ran, I do all i have to do at the same time also. -
Any Martial Art can be combative. Its just that many of them have go in other directions like Sports, recreation, fitness, etc... As G95 says, it depends on the Focus you give it. I know a couple of Shotokan karate guys that can handle themselfs really good in a real situation.

540/720 Kicks takes time and a healty body to get them.. I'd rather use that very same amount of time to develop a better basic front kick, side kicks or roundhouse.. lol

Beating the Instructor
Karateka_latino replied to Black Dragon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Sparring in the Dojo isn't about winning or losing, is about learning. Maybe you should raise up your sparring level a little bit so your instructor raise his. Do it gradually, don't try to defeat your Instructor. By raising up your level gradually, you'll notice how much your Instructor is holding back when he's sparring with you and neither will get hurt.
