Karate+Dance=Jean Claude Van Dame TaiChi did wonders for me. It really helps to loosen up the muscles and make your moves more gracefull. -
In my dojo we still use the traditional white, green brown, black. Belts are overrated.

creating you own martial arts style
Karateka_latino replied to blaze78_9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Before you even think about creating a system, you should build a solid base in one style. Then fill the gaps you may have. And then, when you feel what you are doing is far from your base style, that you feel you are doing something else, you can say you have your own system. This is a good article about the subject: http://www.blackbeltmag.com/archives/blackbelt/1999/sep99/3.html hope it helps. -

To late to become good?
Karateka_latino replied to Spyder's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Why does people feel soooo old when they reach there 20s?? lol I've noticed that for sometime now. I read thread like this thinking this person may be in there late 50's or something and turns out to be in there early 20's wondering if its too late now. lol Many grand masters started to train in there early 20's. Even Combat Sports icons Like Bas Rutten who started to train in his early 20's And Aikido is an art that just gets better as you get older so, No problem friend. -
Ok. i found something. Hope this helps. http://freespace.virgin.net/mike.clark/sodokan24.htm

Hung Gar stylist wins UFC fight.
Karateka_latino replied to jmd161's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I guess the guy said that he DID used his Kung fu training for the stand up, he isn't saying that he won the match with Kung fu only. He's saying that his MAIN style is Kung fu but he have trained in other things. Is like when Vitor Belfort used his punching combos to win matches, the credit was usually going to the BJJ stable, even with the fact he won with Boxing. In this case, He's a kung fu guy, so the win goes to Kung Fu. Besides, none can take credit for inventing the takedown, mount, punch combo, i mean, even NON trained people do that. its the trademark of some vale tudo fighters, Yes. but they don't OWN it. lol -
Yes, i've heard the same about them. At first when i watched the TOP TEN MARTIAL ARTS special on TV, i thought it was quite cool. But after some research, it seems they aren't legit.

I've gone to several karate schools to visit and to train in and i must said that Goju and kyokushin have many good tools for self defense. If the Goju school in your area seems to be good then go and try a couple of lessons there. Goju-ryu works mainly in close-range, trapping, low kicks which are all good for self-defense. But as HCGG says, its still a traditional art and you have to work on many things that you may not like at first if you are just looking for JUST self defense. In that case, i'd recomend you find a Krav-Maga or Jeet Kune Do school.

I'm agree with the first part. Yes, If you THINK you can stop a grapple with certain techniques but you haven't actually Try them on an grappler. If it's all theory of yours or something you sensei told you, then you are just talking B.S. Now about the second part, well i can say the same about MMA people. Just because the Gracies are great fightes doesnt mean you are a great figther by default and also doesn't give you the right to bash other styles. It works both ways i guess.

That's True, i know some of those people. But the things is, since the MMA are getting the media coverage (TV, magazines, movies, PPV events, etc..) they are the ones on public eyes and if they have attitude, people will think they are ALL like that. Even with the fact that some of them are just playing characters. Is Like in the movies when you start to hate the bad guy when in fact, its just an actor playing a role. And like the movies, the Young people start to Mimic and copy those bad attitudes. That's one of the reasons why you see a lot of bashing from the MMA fans to traditional styles.
