To change or not to change dojos?
yamesu replied to MAMom78's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would follow my gut feeling if I were you. Intuition is a powerful tool, and humans have not survived this long by blindly following the advice of others. As a side note - I currently train about two hrs away from home two-three times a week because I dont feel that the more local schools "fit" my needs, or are at the caliber I want to train. Best of luck! -
Just got my green belt 6th Kyu

Congatulations! This is a milestone, as it is where the training really starts to intensify to work towards a dan grade. Health, fitness, technique, stamina, as well as setting examples for more junior kyu grades is all part of it. -

HiddenDragon and Zaine- Both solid words. I would also add "Self-Control". Not just in the physical sense, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually also.

Solid - three words = George St Pierre Isnt he a Wrestler? Anyway, thank you so much guys for the reply, what I am going to do is, talk to the karate instructor to see what kind of instructor he is, idealy, I am not going to change my boxing stance, the chi kung/kung fu is more so a conditioning regimen then an actual combat delivery system like a muay thai/boxing. I am a bliever in specializing in a martial arts, mine is boxing and at the end of the day, no matter which martial art I learn on the side, it has to be delivered within my boxing mechanic. So far I have learned through kung fu that, lots of boxers/combat fighters get injured because they have strong fast twitch muscles but weak hand conditioning that is unable to protect them from there own fast twitch muscles they gain through athletic training, ofcourse they neglect the traditional martial arts hand conditioning. With me, I have had crappy punching power, so the iron palm that I learned has helped my hands feeling less brittle after a spar or any friction from hitting the bag. But most importantly my accuracy has increased through the kung fu training due to one legged squats, performing various postures thats helping my form and body mechanics perform a more stable boxing techniques. Perhaps Im just getting greedy here, I think I should just stick with kungfu and the days that there are no kung fu I can just drill the hell out the forms, iron palms and other excercises from strong man world... He has been training Kyokushin since age 7. Later took up Wrestling and BJJ.

Crossed arm chambers and applications

Don't forget that the "blocking" hand is ALSO suppose to prevent the attacker from re-engaging, thus, the attackers hand(s) are out of position, which stalls the attackers transitions and the like. Solid. -

Crossed arm chambers and applications

Solid info. Additionally, dropping the elbow by the ribs (as well as allowing face cover with the hands), also allows one to compress the ribs together, making them a stronger "structure", as opposed to having them spread, which is weaker and can lead to breakages more easily. -

Aside from the already raised point of not being on the path of the incoming kick to begin with (which is hard in a full contact fight, and sometimes you just have to wear it - see competition Muay Thai and Kyokushin fights for examples) I agree that the knee/shin block is a better option. I rarely drop my hands below my chest in sparring. -

Very interesting views here, thanks Bushido and everyone who has contributed so far. This got my brain juices flowing. In kyokushin and Arnis we have utilised this as part of self defence techniques. Its interesting the applications that come from this to single hand grabs etc. Additionally, one thing I have been taught in Kyokushin, is to further use the chest muscles to compliment the crossover. Compress them (pecs etc) on the crossover, and then bang, expand on execution. Nearly doubles the power. -

What is your bread and butter for technique(s)?
yamesu replied to Alpha One Four's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I support you in this, but (as others have stated on more or less words) there are two ways this could go. -It could end up being a really great style, comparable to the tried and tested styles that still live on today, or; -It could end up being something which people put untried and untested faith in to protect themselves with knowledge that may not necessarily work. Which way this goes is completely up to you, and not just your experiences and knowledge, but also how well you can teach and impart knowledge onto others. That is an art in itself. If you do want recognition, then I'd say enter and perform well in a highly regarded cometition such as competing at Lumpinee Stadium in Thailand, competing in Pride FC, or the World Kyokushin Championships in Japan. That could potentially give you stong recognition off the bat.
