Not One, But Many!?!
yamesu replied to sensei8's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I predominantly train Kyokushin, but have Isa grade (1st dan equivalent) in Arnis, as well as a Brown Belt in Judo. I know its not BJJ, but Judo is much the same I believe. I can say, that while Kyokushin is my passion, the grappling/trapping and takedowns have assisted greatly in interpreting grappling contained in Kyokushin (yes, there is actually a lot of grappling/takedowns in Kyokushin!) Smash and grab, smash and grab. -
^^ Totally agree. If it were me, I would have raised the issue with the head instructor in a nice manner, simply explaining my point of view (not at all being rude). If I was still met with bad attitude, I would move onto a different dojo.

Interesting read! I love this point: “Attention is like water. It flows. It’s liquid. You create channels to divert it, and you hope that it flows the right way.” Its akin to Musashi and Sun Tzu. Work in fighting and in business.

Brother's Dispute! Should children spar?
yamesu replied to The Greatest Disciple's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I think it is fine as long as the correct controls are applied. We allow kids to spar in class, but its light contact, no thigh kicks (or any kicks below the belt), and full pads/gear. It gives them a chance to see how their techniques adn practice is paying off, as well as opportunities to guage distance adn timing that would not otherwise be available. -
27 May 2013. -120min Kyokushin class. Brain did not want to work with body, and I managed to stuff just about every kata...

While I agree, Id be more inclined to tell people to check with there doctor before eating McDonalds! I dont like the term "diet", as to me this is just eating more sensible (particularly where the OP noted that they cheat more than they should - sounds like me Ive been trying to eat more natural for about 18 months now too, having started with Keto-diet in the beginning, losing a considerable mount of fat (with a lot of hard work mind you!), and then shifting it to a non-packaged food and fresh produce at every meal type lifestyle. Works a treat! Basically (well on a bio-chemical level) what your doing is re-setting your metabolism. There are three main metabolic pathways in the body if we dont count that for micro-nutrients, which are: 1) Glycogenic (metabolism of Carbohydrates) which largely can contribute to storing fat where there is excess energy consumed. 2) Triglycerides, or metabolism of fats. 3) Amino acid and protien breakdown. All of these can be used for ATP in one way or another for energy in the body - problem is, since the advent of processed and packaged food, most people rely largely on Glycogenic diets instead of a healthy mix. I believe that this has lead to a range of diseases such as diabeties and cancer (though that is debatable in the scientific community). At the beginning of trying to re-set ones metabolism there can be side effects such as nausea, headaches and other ailments, though these are normally short lived. I can safely say that in the past 12 months I feel lighter and more energetic than I think I ever have, and this has been coupled with fat loss and increases in power without bulking too much muscle on! Its pretty simple - balance natural foods (if its not fresh, or wont go off dont eat it!), eat healthy fats and a good amount of them, and look at protein rich foods, slow release carbs and fresh veggies/fruits with every meal.

All of this, having the right attitude and being aware is possibly more important than having a few rushed skills of MA. My daughter recently went to Morocco on a walking trip that took them through very poor areas and villages in the mountains, they had excellent guides and good attitudes - the rest of our trust was put in God to keep them safe. If it's an organised delegation type trip then "stick close to the guides/staff" would be the best advice as they would know the local area. Learning to shut ones mouth and keep walking. My better half and I travel every year or so to SE Asia, and just got back from a trip to Bangkok and rural Thailand and Cambodia. If your not in your element, then no amount of Martial Arts is going to help, save Mushin and awareness of ones surroundings. Particularly in countries where guns are unregulated and gangs can go un-policed. Its really, in my opinion, about displaying a bit of common sense. Dont put yourself in a position where its a dodgy area, or where you are extremely vulnerable. A bit of background research on the areas of intended travel is great too - learn where to avoid at what times etc etc... These few tenants have served us well over the years. None-the-less, it is always certain that she will come back with some great and interesting stories!

Do Kyokushin or other karate styles practice throws?
yamesu replied to Himokiri Karate's topic in Karate
After I was shown that in the Taikyoku kata - it literally blew my mind. Every turn has a grapple/throw or takedown, and once I started thinking about that, it has changed the way I do the kata forever! -

American Based (Are We That Unworthy?)
yamesu replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This was kind of my point. In the western world we use the Arabic system of numbers. Calculus was not really "formalised" (it was around in some form, but just to iterate my point) until Greek mathematicians worked out the nuiances of it. Does that make calculus worthless because it does not come from the root of Arabic? I think not. It is still very useful. Great point. In fact, i would even go so far as to say I would rather train under someone local, as they have a better understanding of the life I lead and society I live in, and therefore have a better inclination as to how I should be training for everyday life.
