  1. what else is cagefighting for? well, entertainment, but you know....
  2. yea... you just need to eat more and start lifting. you lost weight because you cut out the crap, yea, but if you want to bulk up you need to eat in bulk. there are a ton of threads in here allready about that kinda thing, diet and lifting and so on.
  3. i think they called them 'fives' last time i did them.... what they would do is pyramid up and back down with each leg low roundhouse then high. that means... start left, do one low, two low (in a row)... up to five, then four... back down to one. then do that on the right leg. then repeat only with higher kicks. it seems easy at first, but..
  4. a lot of bjj places also teach standup techniques usually (if not always) based on muay thai.... jump kicks? id look into that school before i signed up for anything.
  5. far as i know no katas in JJ (thank god). its a grappling class, usually more stand up like judo. i highly recommend it. (or bjj!!!)
  6. if i ever drop my fist to my hip when im throwing a punch i deserve to be hit in the face, and if my opponent is any good i will be. if it has to do with elbowing someone behind you while punching someone infront of you (the only justification ive ever heard for it), thats dreamworld fighting.
  7. that was actually my point with striking. because ranges change so quick, punching vs kicking ranger is meaningless. why i said in or out is because either theyre figthing you and near enough to be hit, or too far away in which case theyre running away, coming at you, or youre running away.
  8. always cool to see grappling like that in real life action. when i first started grappling it seemed wierd (since you never see it on tv or anything) to use your legs to pin someone, but it really is useful and effective.
  9. no, i meant like crecent kicks and flying spinning kicks and those punching things where you have your other fist at your hip. all useless. belt or sleeve grabbing is sometimes applicable because, hopefully, your opponent on the street will be wearing clothes. not always, but sometimes in the winter hell have a jacket or coat on, you can grab it just like you grap a gi.
  10. first of fall, the philosphy i go by is that there are two basic types of fighting- grappling and striking. in striking, i only see two ranges- within striking range and out of it (too far away). movements happen so fast trying to break it down further is really a waste of time. as far as grappling goes, its either stand up or ground. classifying it further is needlessly complicated. also, why does situational awareness qualify as part of martial arts? i thought martial arts was about fighting, common sense and life experience tells you when a fight is on the way. one more thing- i dont know what that question is supposed to mean, though im pretty sure it has a stupid point.... id rather face the woman than the green beret, because i could take her on more easily. (???)
  11. ill second that. the best fighters in the world arent the best because of some fancy wierd stuff you see in movies- the use regular punches and simple kicks and takedowns and all that. theyre the best because they do those few (by comparison) things the best. again, ill say that there are a lot of martial art techniques that have no place in the real world.
  12. just to throw in a small dose of impericism/reality... you cant beat seven guys. even randy couture wouldnt beat seven guys at once if they had any meat on them.
  13. ..... riiiight i dont know about calcium deposits... but if your bones are repeatedly struck they will harden. MT guys do it to their shins all the time. perhaps the same can be done to your ribs, i dunno. but i do know that MT guys dont break their shins to do what they do.
  14. until its proven to exist, yea. (it would have been by now.)
  15. yea thats what i meant- going past 45 degrees. although, at times it is advantageous to square up some more... like if your opponent is about to shoot in and try to take you down.
  16. maybe get an underhook if you can get ahold of his arm, then toss him.
  17. to add to what sevenstar said... though its not the most popular thing to say, SOME MARTIAL ARTS ARE BETTER (meaning at fighting, combat stuff) THAN OTHERS. thai kicks are thrown differently than karate kicks, and are more powerful and more useful and, really, cant be improved upon. there are certain things in fights that work, and many things that dont. some martial arts teach what works, most teach what dont.
  18. maaaaaybe to the ribs... any higher, no way.
  19. in the striking game, on the street, i personally look at kicks merely as a suppliment to punches. that means that a kick maybe here and there if appropriate, but definitely throw those hands.
  20. yea right. id change martial arts if i were you.
  21. TKD, karate, kung fu, and then kempo, probably in that order.
  22. ill go ahead and answer the original question.... mumbo jumbo!
  23. hahaha drunken monkey said it best. im with that guy.
  24. look into bjj. gracie academy. i think youll like their stuff.
  25. mma typically just means striking and grappling. usually that means muay thai and bjj. so look for those.
