Karate v Boxing
Vito replied to shukokai2000's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
boxing has all that too. the entire idea is to not project a punch, so its fast and it comes from nowhere. between that and feigning, it can be hell trying to defend a boxers offense. its all about getting in your strikes before the other guy on the street, and thats what boxing will do for you. -
dont do deadlifts either... and while the benchpress is great, id recommend dumbells instead.

spar with a guy who jabs all the time. youll learn. dont forget to shrug your shoulders up.

boxers are trained in punching and moving... and theyre fast and effecient. itd be harder than you thyink to just smash his knee and be done with it on the street. -

Vito replied to cmantim's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
cross said it. pesonally i think bjj is better for the streets and the cage and all that, but tjj, when taught by a non-ultra traditional weirdo teacher (i hate those guys) is a good one too. -

well, on the street, boxing is one of the best martial arts to know. bruce lee said that himself. as for karate, dependso n the karate... most of that crap in the us boxing hands down. maybe some of those hard core kyokushkin whatevers will take on a boxer. maybe. -

i think tkd is good for anyone not old enough to do muay thai. its easier to learn a good thai kick if you know the less good tkd kicks. like a warm up for the real stuff. and for the high kicks- they certainly arent always effective... but they can be in some (non-street) situations.

MenteReligieuse said: hahahahaha!!! i take it you dont have much experience with MT. let me make this very simple for you, and dont take this as an insult, thats not my intention... but that lohan stuff, and that shaolin kung fu (ive done that before) is not preparing you for anything. even if you learn something, which i honestly doubt, go against anyone doing MT for as long as you have been training, even half as long, i garuntee youll lose. MT is the hardest most effective striking art in the word, just because they do it for sport doesnt make its practicioners less deadly. there are less types of striked taught than in your kung fu school because they arent concerned with a) what isnt effective, and b) what is less effective than what they do. the fact that it is sport oriented only makes them better because that gives them more experience in some very realistic fighting situations, and experience counts more than anything, and conditions them further. whos learning more, the guy who punches air all day and blocks imaginary punches or standardized drilled punches and formalized katas, or the guy whos actually in the ring blocking and punching a guy whos trying to do the same to him? in all honesty, unless youre some sort of super-human, theyd kill you in a fight.
