  1. I have to say dont plan on seeing Jiu Jitsu classes offered in high school any sooner then you will see Karate classes. The liability risk is so high and in such a litigious society i dont think it will happen
  2. One thing i will give them is they have a beautiful Facility, Large, well equipped, and fun to see.
  3. the stances being taught in most martial arts i have seen are not impractical at all. They may have specific reasons to use them, but are not impractical. the one you are describing sounds to me like a close kneel stance( at least that is what it is called in my style) Its very possible that your friend has the wrong foot position or is misusing the stance. Also your friend may be of a bodytype that when facing most people wouldnt use that stance. I know that I am a large person, and rarely will i use the same stances and techniques that much smaller people will use. Simply because I wont ever have a height difference in respect to theirs unless maybe i was fighting Shaquille O'Neil Think of the stances as different types of Bricks that you can build a house with. Your house may very well be different then mine so you are likely to use different bricks. I know that I have learned dozens and dozens of different attacks, including hands, fingers, arms, knees, legs, etc.etc. But I would normally not use but a few of those in most situations, the others are fairly specific to being in situations where the "mainstay" so to speak is unable to be used either do to limitations in body position, or hazards around you. My advice would be to learn the stance, learn what it is used for. PRactice it, think of different ways it can be used other then what you have been told, and file it away for use when you need it.... They key being to practice it so you dont forget it
  4. Wizzy think of it like anything else in your life... If you want to get better you need to do all you can to improve. at the same time at some point there is a line you cross that too much begins to hurt you. your body/emotions/etc will let you know when you are hitting that point. if you are seeing rapid improvement on 2 hours a week then continue that until you see it leveling off.... and then increase it.... only you can be the judge on what is truely to much or too little for you Just do all you can up tot he point that it starts to be detrimental to your life
  5. It wont work on a standing bag anywhere near as well.... the way the bag works doesnt work as well for this, if you have a hanging bag definitely set it up.
  6. your in vegas huh? Im headed out right now Going to be there at the fights myself. Personally I am hoping to run into Carter Williams, I really am hoping to be able to egg him on enough so that they accept a fight offer As far as people beign on steroids, unfortunately alot of wannabes are on steroids. But most of the guys i have seen fighting are not too big... marvin eastman from vegas is a big musclebound guy, there are a few others but like marvin those are usually shorter guys who need to apck it on. Most of the people fighting in K1 are about my size.... give or take a couple inches and a few pounds.. prototypical K1 fighters are about 6' to 6'5" and between 215 and 250.. most bodybuilders are going to be between 5'6" and 6' and weigh between 250 and 320.. the K1 athletes imo are easy to do naturally with no juice.... I know alot of people look at some profressional athletes and think damn those guys are huge... But until you have seen a profressional Bodybuilder up close its hard to picture how freakishly big peopel can get their muscles. I had an opportunity to mean Ronnie Coleman about a year ago... the guy was about 350 pounds and you could see he was damn near shredded... IT was almost like a train wreck.... you couldnt stop looking even though you didnt want too
  7. welcome aboard
  8. welcome aboard and dont worry about the writing mistakes. I speak english as a native language and i make mistakes writing it all the time
  9. well I am in American Kenpo Karate.. It is a progressive art, meaning it is constantly evolving and bringing in new aspects. We cover all ranges of fighting. we teach sparring techniques in all belt ranges, and it goes soemthing like this.... beginner belts learn point sparring techniques. intermediate belts learn some trickier karate sparring techniques and get into Boxing techniques the next step for the advanced is kickboxing techniques. and as you get farther int he advanced ranks they teach grappling. kind of a natural progression to a natural fight int he streets.... distance... in close..... on ground.
  10. most likely it will be K1 first. there have been some talks back and forth but nothing serious enough yet, I would estimate 2-3 more serious fights on my end and it will be a done deal. I think UFC or Pride will come... most likely i will be ina king of the cage or extreme fight first.... /shrug but i expect all that to come after k1
  11. mixed martial arts. generally it entails the recent launch into fighters combining multiple martial arts to make them a better fighter at all ranges. for the most part it entails a grappling martial art, a striking martial art, that being either a combo fo kickboxing and boxing,.... although others are used
  12. without being allowed to punch your opponent you are limited.. tell them the next time you fight that since you cant punch they are not allowed to use thier fingers. then it should be closer to equal
  13. practice on a heavy bag... get the bag started and practice changing feet and keeping hte bag so it never goes back towards you... basically once you kick it you never let it swing back on its axis towards you, it takes speed, and balance to keep this going. if you do it often you will develop alot better skill and wont have as many problems
  14. the only muay thai tournaments i am familiar with are all full contact with minimal protection... meaning mouthpiece, groin cup, and gloves. this is the first i have heard of htis type of tournament you mention
  15. Lifting Weights will absolutely help you and make you a healthier, stronger, faster, better human being. that being said, If you do it wrong you can kill yourself, or do irreperable harm. I highly recommend paying for a personal trainer to give you a program based on the goals you want to achieve and then learn how to follow it from there. There is no magic machine to make you fit, the work is as much mental as it is physical, meaning if you dont learn how to do it right you wont gain as much as you could if you did, and you stand a high risk of hurting yourself.
  16. being from Australia I am surprised you didnt say John Wayne Parr, he is great
  17. i would be shocked if your instructor took you on as a student of Muay Thai being 14. Everywhere I know of around these parts have a minimum age of 16, and usually dont take anyone under 18.
  18. well I am actually already a Pro fighter, I listed some of my experience in my introduction post, or another post. But I have to say i am surprised they even let the guy go back to amateur. But the funny thing is there is alot more money and work for amateurs because its all paid under the table, basically once you go pro, your only choice if you want to make the money is to go the top shows, other then that there really is no advantages to turning pro unless your a boxer
  19. congrats ramymensa... Does this mean last months member of the month turns into a pumpkin?
  20. Royce Gracie will most likely not fight in the UFC again, he cant handle the bodies and the athletisism the fighters have today. the boxer goes way way back, before they had a good matchmaker in charge, you wont be seeing any mismatches like that again i hope My favorites have to be Vitor, Couture, Lidell, Nogiera... All are great athletic specimens, and great all around fighters, all 4 of them could take Royce out in a fairly easy match i believe. I was a little upset recently as I thought I was going to ahve the shot to fight David Tank Abbott, unfortunately he convienently had other places to be i guess. I think sometime next year you will be seeing me compete in either UFC, Pride, or K1 stay tuned
  21. sounds like you should be doing some homework along with the privates.... in other words, try to come before and after your private and get your warm ups in so you dont have to waste your hour doing it. If your instructor sees you warming up before and doing bagwork on your own after you will probably be getting more actual instruction during
  22. by spirituality i am assuming you mean religious tones?? I have also noticed that a large number of martial arts studios have some seriously religious people running them.
  23. dang Bat, I like all those movies... point break was one of my favorites for a little while. /sigh
  24. I have xbox live.. have yet to use it though. i dont have either of those games though
  25. I love this kind of fighting. One of the things i love most in my pre fight preparation is when I work my sparring and I have fresh opponents coming in with different styles and strengths..... It is so exhilarating to change pace and take a different edge when you fight
