  1. go Indians..... oh and welcome and no im not an Indian fan... go PADRES!
  2. how much money are you willing to spend? thats going to be the kicker
  3. Congratulations! I have always admired the will and determination of those students that have failed a test and have been able to humble themselves, accept it, rebound, and come back to be successful! That is a great asset and one that I am sure will serve you for years to come! I have unfortunately had to fail students at tests, and from my experience the large majority of those failures has not been from lack of the curriculum knowledge, but rather the mindset of being afraid, distracted, tired, or hurt. As much of the test is about the mind as the body. Once again Congratulations!
  4. have you tried emailed Shureido, or at least the company you got them from and stating your case and asking if they can exchange them out?
  5. we meditate to open class and end class, but its a quick 10-30 second type of a thing... when we do anything that is specifically challenging we will have a little more meditation but its more of a passing thing then a serious tool we use, at least at this point
  6. I personally think its Gymkata.... reincarnated. go rent the movie, but dont come after me for wasting your money. I have seen some XMA competitors, and besides a semi interesting monkey suit they wear with a clip on belt(chuckles) I wasnt impressed at all. I think when the seed money fails, they may get a couple investors, once that fails it will go the way of the Dodo
  7. Im looking forward to watching the weightlifting, Boxing, and Gymnastics. the martial arts part frustrates me because i see no reason kickboxing shouldnt be there. Basketball is ugly atm... I am a huge basketball fan, but the US doesnt ever send a team anymore they send 12 individuals who all want glory and have no interest in working together. All they want to do is drive and dunk and make a highlight reel. I am actually hoping the world kicks our butts this time. With european players who practice shooting on the perimeter and passing and defense, who knows maybe it will snap a few young kids back to reality and stop the horsecrap that has become basketball of late... in case you dont realize it i love the sport but am furious how it has been heading recently
  8. apparantly the names were changed to protect the innocent
  9. I also think that the Belt should not ever be worn outside the studio, unless it is a school sponsored function that requires it. Our school also forbids wearing the belt out in public. and actually to the guy above me, the belt is not necessarily to hold the gi closed, there are tie downs that do that. The belt is simply to show rank at this time in martial arts history, unless you are doing something like Jui Jitsu, and you have no tie downs
  10. You know I really wish when people post these topics that they would at least do some preliminary research and at least post something more along the lines of..... What do you all think of Yusul? I know it is a form of JuJitsu, and is somehow related to Choi and was taught by him when he returned to Korea, and is somehow related to Chois work in Taekwon do.... etc.etc..etc. At least show some form of trying to find an answer yourself /shrug as far as what i think of it? Absolutely nothing, I got the above information in 10 seconds with an internet search , so unfortunately i cant help you any further sorry
  11. Jeet Kun Do is not a style. You should pick up a copy of the book Tao of Jeet Kun Do its a hard read, but its a good read. Its more a philosophy. One thing about it is it is incomplete. And it is progressive. It also started hundreds of years before Bruce Lee was born, He himself stated there were no original principles in hsi book, they were already out there, he just brought them together.
  12. yes it will be a big screen movie, and from all indications it will make a pretty good pull at the box office
  13. Bruce Lee Royce Gracie Steven Segal Wesley Snipes Chuck Norris Jet Li Jackie Chan Dolph Lungdren Jean Claude Van Damme Jason Statham
  14. I am around that constantly and I know of noone that admits to having diabetes that is a fighter. I have a few students that have diabetes, and the most serious has a device that is attached directly to him at all times, it looks like a small walkman, he seems to do ok, and it hasnt seemed to be a distraction to him or his fellow students at all
  15. Funny I thought it was primarily an offensive style with little self defense. But from the rest of your post I have to assume you are a comedian anyways
  16. Ok I am a bit shocked still, But a converted boxer won it.. granted I think the competition was serious deplete of great talent, I am still surprised. Cater Williams was knocked out, even though to that point he was winning the fight handily. It still makes me take a step back and wonder how did this happen.. I have to take a closer look at all this because I am quite confused that someone who only recently started actual kickboxing was able to win this fight. Go Mighty Mo /shrug
  17. No that actually isnt correct. And to answer your earlier question... not many of the people under our roof are professional fighters... Although we often have Professional fighters come to our facilities and train for periods of time, both with our staff and alone. We have a Professional boxer Currently who is fighting in two weeks against the number 2 contender, he has won a title in the past and after time off is working his way back up. We have a couple Professional Kickboxers We have several world champions in the Kenpo Karate side, there isnt really a Professional grading there, but then there are so many organizations and world and international and national tournaments and fights that its almost ridiculous to claim anything in Karate unless you are making ridiculous headlines with it. Currently I am the only probably the only no holds barred fighter in our facility. Now back to the main topic... Kenpo Karate can be as diverse as you want it to be. I choose to take my training to this level, but in my studio I am the far right extreme. We teach the complete curriculum, but just because we do, doesnt mean that everyone has to go to my extent. We also have instructors and classes for Boxing, Kickboxing, and Jiu Jitsu. We have had a variety of Professional trainers and Fighters come into and through our facilities, and we have included applications learned from all experiences into the system. Basically with Kenpo Karate like many forms of martial arts you have different aspects... we have.. Basics Sets and Forms Sparring Techniques Self Defense Techniques Theory and History Anatomy. Now certain types of people are drawn to certain types of activities. some people prefer sets and forms, some prefer the theory and History, or Anatomy, or like myself the Sparring. Now while everyone must learn everything on the way up as they progress, everyone does not have to dive into any particular category to the degree i have in sparring. I would definitely say i am the exception rather then the rule at our studio. I like to think that our students can do well if they needed to, but like many in todays society most people do not like pain ... and i dont care how good you are, sparring at some point to some extent includes pain. while our system of American Kenpo Karate is almost Identical to the others in regards to history and theory, and Anatomy, and Sets and Forms, we have added many moves that we call Basics that are particular to new sparring techniques we have added to our system. And of course we have added and altered the sparring techniques to match the ranges i discussed earlier. If that makes sense.. I would imagine that our studio is probably fairly similar to many other well established martial arts studios out there that have a large student base.. you will have the full range of society... from kids to elders, from people wanting to learn basic self defense, to people who want to have fun with their families, to parents wanting to enrich their kids lives, to people like me. Every Martial Arts studio out there has at least 1 person who everyone else looks at with some awe based on his physical skills and ability to spar.... regardless of type of sparring. We have an official website, I however am not to thrilled with it, it was just changed recently and I think it looks kind of cheesy. It is still under construction though I am told, so it should be interesting to see the final product. WWW.Powaykenpo.com The picture on the front is My instructor, his wife, and their kids, and their Grandson. This is the Mission Statement of our Facility; I think that overall our school is a really good example of how a school can serve all ends of the spectrum. One thing I cannot stress however is that in our different classes... Boxing, Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, Kenpo, we have Different Head Instructors under each Art... I definitely recomend this as opposed to schools who have 1 instructor who teaches it all. /shrug I hope this makes it a bit clearer, however I am thinking this may have just made it more confusing :/
  18. /sigh I was going to the K1 Fights tonight but unfortunately didnt leave when i was supposed to. we are leaving now but i am positive im going to miss most of it... its about 3 1/2 hour drive and it starts soon /cry
  19. If the person if a foot taller then you and knows how to handle himself this could work 0% of the time. The biggest thing in my bag of tricks is to be able to spot potential problems before they are on me, and to be able to position myself to be in the best position i possibly can depending on what my motives are. IF my motives are not to get in a fight, then i leave or remove myself from the situation before it occurs. If my motives are to continue what i am doing and it leads me to a confrontation then i make sure i have the upper hand, and depending on the situation that can be one of a million possiblities.
  20. I do cross train in Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu. My instructor was a student of Brian Adams, Jim Mitchell, and currently Ernie George. Ed Parker himself sat on several of my instructors testing boards. My Instructor has advanced the system as Ed Parker himself had done to the point of his death. One major bonus my intructor had training with those three different students was that each student worked primarily with Ed PArker in Different Decades. the 60s, 70s, and 80s, so he personally saw how each instructor moved differently, a direct result of Ed PArkers advancement of the system. Over the years, My instructor has altered some of the techniques, and has added curriculum into the system. He has made completely sure not to remove any of the main principles that Ed Parker included into the system, but when he has seen new principles or principles that were not in our system he made sure to add them to make the system more complete. I have seen many Ed Parker Schools that follow the exact same curriculum as when Ed Parker Died.... actually from before.... and have not advanced or changed anything. I personally dont think thats how Ed PArker wanted it, and i know some will disagree. The system was designed to progress and be a living art that each student could make his own and make work for him. While I dont think that any system on the planet has all the answers to all the questions, I think that the way Ed Parker set his system up allows for the growth to adapt to new principles when things change. When you get down to the nitty gritty of martial arts its alot like mathematics. Ed Parker touches on this in his books. for example.. if A = an Upward block B = reverse punch C = backnuckle strike then the if all else is equal C< A+B meaning if soemone throws a backnuckle to your head, it can be beaten by an upward block with your lead hand and a reverse punch. this is a very simple formula, and it can get quite extensive. I guess i am rambling off topic here, but basically My Instructor has added curriculum into our system to answer the problems that different scenarios bring up. While we are an American Kenpo School, we are progressive as it was designed to be, and we may have different curriculum then some other schools do. If that makes sense
  21. Be Confident. You know yoru curriculum or your teacher wouldnt let you test. Be Prepared. Know any written material, and know all your back material. Be Rested and Healthy. Take your vitamins, eat well, cut out diuretics and drink lots of water for several days before your test. Be the best you can be on that day. PEAK on the day of your test.... dont train to peak before or after your test... Be Respectful. Remember to show your respect for the step you are taking, and make sure to treat it as what it is.... a new beginning. Have Fun!!!!!!!! this is what all yoru hard work has been for to this point. remember to have fun, enjoy the time. Good luck!
  22. there is alot of ego and pride in martial arts, especially when it involves fighters. If you are training in a fighters gym with trainers who are also fighting i would not go cross train with other instructors, especially in the same art. It really wont lead anywhere good. now if you were going to say train in jiu jitsu or some form of KArate... maybe.... but even then you would have to gage it based on how you feel the egos are. some trainers may even tell you to not come back as they may feel some form of disloyalty and bad luck may come of it.... or that you may be giving away trade secrets... Trust is a huge thing when dealing in a fighters gym, and once that trust is gone or questioned its almost impossible to get it back and to be honest if your current trainers are that good, and you are a beginner, i dont think you will learn anything useful by going to 2 different schools and two different trainers
  23. yes let me find his info... and I hate to say it but he is very much like Sapp, an oddity. I dont think he will go far at all, and atm he is a spectator draw due to his size. I find that very different from an actual fighter
  24. well from what experience i have had, i dont train in say american kickboxing, or just plain kickboxing as i have seen, I do Muay Thai. But differences i have oticed watching fighters fight under different rules are the use of knees and elbows in muay thai compared to kickboxing that just seems to use feet and hands. that was the main difference i saw, other thent he grappling and throws of muay thai
