kzshin, this picture is in the same book i wrote about, about the video I have it , not bad ,shows some good pictures and talk about sensei konishi's life then talks about Motobu and his fight with Russian boxer and what he thought about Fonnakushi (doesn't know karate). konishi's relation with Miagi and Mabuni. then it shows Naihanchi Shodan very close to okinawan styles and different from Shotokan Tekki. then it shows 3 Taisabaki katas by konishi's son (there are some mistake in performing or they changed the kata later I don't know but I was not impressed with his level of karate , actually a very high level karate-ka in shindo jinen I was talking to,confirmed this as well.

kzshin, I've seen a picture of Sensei Konishi performing a Tuite technique on sensei Motobu (the one that you get a hold of wrist and attack the neck from underneath of the arm),historically interesting picture.

for anyone interested in Okinawan grappling I suggest this book "Okinawan Karate the secret art of Tuite" by Javier Martinez. He explains in summary how Shaolin Chin Na and Aiki jutsu incorporated in Okinawan Karate as he calls it Tuite, then he proceeds to katas, Seisan (can be applied to both version of NahaTe and ShuriTe I coulddn’t realize what version exactly), Seiunchin, Naihanchi(Shodan),Wansu,Chinto(I think it is Tomari-chinto),Kusanku( I think he talks about Chatan Yara Kusanku) I didn’t like it at first but later I spent more time on it and got lots of useful information. one thing I ‘d like to mention is Okinawan grappling techniques are incorporated with blockin/striking( refer you to the post by Shorin Ryuu) part of it ,you normally won’t try to use it directly against an aware opponent, secondly it needs a long time practice since most of techniques are involved with effective grabbing of pressure points/joints/tissues /ect..

Shorin ryu wrote :" it seems you and quite a few other people (from just a google image search) refer to what you are saying as an uramawashigeri." My dear friend shorin ryuu I think you are upset. so I have to clarify here . I got to say before i have the privilege of study under Shorin ryu senseis from 1999 I had practiced Jap. And Korean Styles mainly because my father is a Shotokan stylist and Korean arts are very popular among teenagers. when I came to US I realized some of the terms we use back in my country are different from locals here. also some of the Jap. And Okinawan name are different although showing the same technique like sotoUke and uchiUke. So when I asked you I didn’t mean to challenge your information as I explained all of us know the technique and just was trying to adapt my terminology with yours so it was basically an honest question and definitely not questioning your information. I am sorry for my wrong post anyway.

Kime(Yudansha) made in Taiwan , has half sleeve , it stands about 5" above wrist. i have a 14OZ and love it, any thing you buy don't get less than 12oz material.

Shorin Ryuu , check this out.I know everybody knows this kicks i am just trying to find a common name for it and correct my terminalogy if needed. as i understood 1- in UraMawashi you can't hit with any part of top of you foot for example toe nail can't touch the target 2- in Uramawashi leg becomes straight and you hit as you chamber back or right before that. 3- in UraMikuzaki it is possible to hit the target with top of the foot Although tip of the toe is more practical 4-in UraMikuzaki at the point of contact it is possible to lock the knee 5- in Uramawashi knee is toward the supporting leg,in UraMikazuki knee is in opposite direction of supporing leg. now give me the name for this to opposite kicks. I used to do these kicks in Wado-ryu but from the time i changed to Shorin we spend more time in taking the eyes out than kicking to the head.

aefibird, take me with you,I can cook.

maybe i am wrong but i think the kick that "killer miller" and "Shorin ryuu" in his first post are refering is Ura-Mikazukigeri (reverse crescent kick) with toe or top of the foot for kicking inside of thigh. to my understanding Uramawashi can be executed effectively only on head and back of neck areas.
-
consider this application in front stance you are engage at close quarter as soon as you dis-engage slide back and same time use Uramawashi like a slap to the side of the head. I use this technique for point kumite of course in a real situation or full contact as we do in shorin ryu there is no room for this kind of moves.

I practiced one year under sensei Craig in Houston. (4th Kyu)i didn't like it because I felt, it has nothing more than shotokan or shito ryu at least in that dojo, although later on I met sensei Howard Hughes and his karate was pretty impressive.

Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu is the style McCarthy promotes, it's a shorin-ryu but not a major branch ,you can call in Uchinadi kenpo.
-
I keep saying "yes ,sensei" to my workers when they suddenly apear and ask something.
-
welcome to KF, what kind of shorin-ryu do you practice?
-
I’d like to know about Kenpo/kempo roots, styles and relation between kenpo/kempo and okinwan karate and Chinese boxing. I am not trying to find out about one particular style of knpo but as a general ,how it started and continued.

i think it is most likely Matsumura seito(Hohen soken) , although it might be shobayashi shorin ryu too(shimabukuru). all these katas are great and really the original ,these are the roots for shotokan, shitoryu(at leat half of it),Wado ryu,kyukoshin,Isshin-ryu,TKD,TSD and many other styles. what is messing is Naihanchi Shodan /Pinan shodan /Pinan nidan at least.

my new dojo is great , i was lookin for a new one till "shorin Ryuu" mentioned some names and i did some research , i found him by chance ,he teaches one day a month in another dojo and i was there that day watching their practice, we practice 4 days ,all adults , right fee, small group and sensei is allways there since it's next to his house. last week it was only two of us, and we sparred half an hour, after that while sensei was helping me cleaning the blood off my face ,i was thinking that is the first time i got my ... kicked and feel great.we practice one day weapon and rest of the days we switch between shorin-ryu and Matsumura family white crane.

if you look at the history of karate you can see some of the greatest masters like Kyan or Nagamine had the same problems they just stayed on the course and made a difference.

2nd dan TKD going to japan to learn KK and becomes a MMA fighter and ended up in a shotokan dojo, pretty stupid.

I have seen many Shotokan dojos use traditional Makiwara , I should say i've never seen a karate dojo without pad, bag, makiwara or some sort of hitting target. We use makiwara which is a flat wood ,wraped by rope or leather for punches and a round wooden post for kicking and shutos, a small makiwara close to the floor for toe kicks, and corn buckets for Nukite and still our main target is thin air. We also march up and down the dojo to practice kihon katas(at least I do).

I asked them , all the people they know live in Chico,Ca like Patrick Healy(spl) or Nabil ,call shorin ryu dojos in Chico,Ca they probebly can help you better.

about Kusanku Kata I just saw it on a chart by shimabukuro founder of Shobayashi ryu (I think it was Seibukan kata lineage chart that i copied in Darrel Craig dojo it was a old page) other reference was Mark bishop book , Okinawan Karate masters. i take your word and try to check the dates anyway your info on Kyan should be more than me.
