  1. this is one way of looking at karate A. sportive A.1. light contact like shotokan, wado ryu, shito ryu, goju kai A.2 full contact Kyukoshin kai B.non sportive like most of traditional okinawan style sportive karate in A.1 may go to Olympics sooner or later they compite in Kumite section and kata. if you like to spar then shotokan is a good place if like to compite in kata then goju kai and shito ryu kyukoshin has it's own rules of sparring they only mix with others in open tournoment and most of the time the winner of open is a kyukoshin guy. non sportive karate steel does the sparing some times even full contact but tournoments are not the goal since there is no clear boundry these are all mixed , you may find a totaly traditional shotokan dojo or a very sportive shorin ryu school. weapons in karate comes mostly from two major school of weapons in okinawa, in some style it is incorprated into style in some it is totaly seprated. grappling is part of karate but a karateka normally avoid going down if they go they try to stand up. in my style all the trows or locks come after the first hit when the oponent is already losen up, if i take somebody doen i won't try to put him in chock,i just drive my knee into his ribs. normally 2 times per week is the minimum but if you don't have time, then as much as you can, for me this is part of life ,i train any time i can ,i don't put any upper or lower limite ,if you plan to do it to the end then number of days are not that important. you are younger you practice more i am older i practice as much as i can. look around in your town and ask people about dojos, best of the bests are not in the dojos with big signs ,most of them practice in their garages or small dojos and most of them have a morning job, at least this is what i have seen.
  2. I suggest you to participate in winter shorin ryu seminar in Houston, you can see different shorin styles ,i guess sensei Lindsey will be there too, this way you can compare them with your sensei's new system.
  3. i've been giving blood every 2-4 months in last 2 years, with no problem, i just wanted to bring this to your attention that if you feel healthy make this a habit of yours. takes only 30-60 mins. GIVE BLOOD , SAVE LIVES.
  4. my native language is Persian(Farsi), my second is English and i have to speak Spanish with my workers, I think i can speak some ching chang choong Chinese but my Chinese girl friend thinks not,
  5. try to stay loss all the time , hard comes right before contact then loss again , all the time loss/hard/loss this way you won't tired and you can develope concentrated power (chi).
  6. that's way i allways keep an extra set at the dojo, i forget my belt all the time, i just put a white belt on and that's all.
  7. look, this is natural, the more you get exposed the more you get relaxe , i've been in situations(2 times and not in the dojo anyway....) that i passed high heart bits and fainting and got to the point that a bitter liquid fills your mouth. anyway this is how i deal with fear and been living like this in last 10 years, i live my life like today is the last day of my life, this way there is no one or no situation that can fear you, if i am gonna die today why should be scared. one other way is meditation using controled breathing, don't think about situation think about your breathing ,try to regulate your brathing not a deep breathing just controled breathing.
  8. empty you cup first. this is what i like to read at home if i got a chance Ninjitsu the compelet reference Complete Guide to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, "We shall fight in the streets": Guide to street fighting : ground, defence, attack, use of explosives, arms and equipment, training, exercises How to Fight Back: The Christian Street Warrior's Guide to Turning the Other Cheek Real Ultimate Power: The Official Ninja Book Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Collected Series, Vol. 1) Martial Arts Home Training: The Complete Guide to the Construction and Use of Home Training Equipment Taking It to the Street : Making Your Martial Art Street Effective ,
  9. just don't over due , pulled muscles takes at least 2-3 weeks to heal.

    Blocking

basic blocks like middle block or outside inside block are not really practical in sparing or a fight, keep both hands up(in close range) make a wedge as soon as you feel the forearm pass your wedge throw your punch ,this is for full contact with gloves other usefull approch is to block with back hand while steping back( like a slap to incomming punch) and then block/hit with front hand..... anyway there are too many practical blocks but IMO two basic blocks we know are not among them these are good for starting stage so don't worry if you can't use them in their basic form during spar, nobody can!

  14. it is not physical but mental tiredness makes the body tired, i used to play blind with my friends and i remember after 2-3 games blind my whole body was weak, do you still play often? i know once you love chess you can never forget about it, every time i go to NewOrleans i gotta play with those guys in french quarter,
  15. Great,Congradulaion.what kata you did for your test? did you spar?
  16. jump on it, my happy days are the days there is nobody else in class ,i can ask anything i want and he may teach me new katas that no other student knows,
  17. chess is good if you find somebody to play with , i was on https://www.gameknot.com for a while, i had to spend 2-3 ours playing and study too. so i quit or they actually kicked me out. now a days if i get some time at home i shoot my bow over the cafee table through the sitting room to the kitchen where my target is, i already have some holes in the cabinets, i know there is no chance i get my deposite back, specialy after i listened to you guys and watched "Ong Bak" movie and tried my knee on the wall, the damn wall collapsed now i have to pay for that too.....
  18. good points, except #4.
  19. some times people like to show off, maybe he just wanna remind you that he knows the stuff, and you can learn from him, i don't think he means to hurt you,
  20. I used to play soccer till i broke my leg, now only MA, Long Bow Shooting, some Chess and 2-3 miles running every other day,
  21. I...hate...touching...eyeballs... i hate it too but the whole karate i pratice is about eyeballs, it's just the matter of how deep you gonna go, in a real situation you can't start punching and kicking with bunch of people, you just take the first eye out ,use him as shield ,throw him to the next take another eye out ,this is karate , in real life you can't put a joint lock or a nice throw on somebody your size easily.
  22. - the Gadfly - The Day of the Jackal / the fourth Protocol - One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' - "The Quiet Don",or "And Quiet Flows the Don" - The Call of the Wild - Tom Sawyer

  24. i was messing with some *.cgi file on my laptop, by mistake i changed the "open with" to "internet explorer" it was originaly "unknown program" now i can't change it back, how can i change this property, now any cgi file i am trying to run doesn't work , IE tries to save it on hard disk.
