ramcalgary replied to KickChick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion

What is more important internal growth or physical development from the martial arts. No chicken answers like saying both

Should a teacher be liable if a student uses his training in a violent aggressive way.

It is a choice but ya gotta love seeing a jump spinning back kick to somebodies noodle over a round kick to the thigh.

Can MA be used against other species?
ramcalgary replied to KickChick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Most def martial arts can be used against other species. Could not have prevailed over that spider in my kitchen yesterday without the years of dedicated pratice and sense of timing martial arts gave me. That spider never saw that axe kick coming. Oh yeah I think the little dude tried to run instead of blocking. Oh well ..... -
high kicks big risk on the street in the ring or sparring why not!!

I studied shotokan for 12 years so I would hardly call that skipping around from style to style. The reason I switched was because I found the punching techniques in shotokan limited and I wanted to kickbox. Not to mentiom if you strike someone on the street in a self defence situation and kill them unless your life was in danger and you use justifiable force it is your butt that will be behind bars . So think about your "one strike on kill" throat attack before you use it maybe a simple side kick to the knee would do the trick.

The one hit one kill philosophy will get you killed it is the primary reason I switched from shotokan to kickboxing. If you are always taught that if you land a certain punch that every person will drop and you hit someone with your best punch and they do not drop. You may not be ready to respond. Self defence situations are always different and you should be ready for anything. Combination punching is far better than relying on one big telegraphed shot.

Olympics In China
ramcalgary replied to MuayTB1's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
can not beleave someone would think that point karate would be good in the olympics .dont you get it judged sports in the olpypics always have problems. people always complain when they compete or watch point tournys that so and so should have won. If the right people try to get kickboxing into the olys it would give our sport instant credability. Although it would still be a judged sport hopefully a 5 round bout would take the decision out of the judges hands. As for tkd in the olys please...a fighting sport where you can not punch to the head..it looks like tag only way more boring. And dont try to tell me that the kicks hurt. I know the kicks hurt but no punches to the face, come on make it real. Maybe the olys would allow leg kicks but I can not see them allowing knees and elbows. Look at boxing the athletes must wear headgear and any solid punch causes a standing eight count. The IOC does not want blood and guts. However oly kickboxng could become just what the sport needs to allow more money into the training facilities. -
Being a martial artist should not cause you to look down upon other people simply because they live their lives different than you. Simply because you choose to live your life with more discipline does not make you better. As far as putting down the Walker program. Sure they took liberties and over exaggerated some things throughout the course of many of the episodes. TV does that. What is wrong with a program that shows the good guys winning and showing that crime does not pay. In a world where the rudeset and the crudest usually get rewarded( eg WWF )it is refreshing to see a program that deals with honor and respect and justice as great things. PS dont you think wearing white pajamas and kicking and punching into the air looks a little strange? It is all in how you look at things! Remember every group of parents think that their kids are strange. My parents thought early U2 and Simple Minds were weird and now I listen to some of my 15 year olds music and think what the he.. is he listening to. Instaed of looking down at people who are diff try to influence them by your actions

common mistakes in sparring
ramcalgary replied to CTpizzaboy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Anon just because you can do kata means diddly in sparring. Sparring is all about timing and distance. If you have great technique and no sense of timing any person with better timing will squash you like a bug. If you throw a perfect side kick when your opponent is out of range what good does it do? however if you throw a flawed leg sweep just as the side kick is coming mr perfect technique is on his butt.
