  1. Great story indeed, best wishes to you and most of all to your father. Keep going Karatekid1975
  2. Welcome to KF. Hooks and uppercuts (expecially uppercuts with their low-up motion) needs some coordination at the beginning but keep practicing and they will turn out just fine.
  3. June 17th (even if 17 in Italy is considered an unlucky number )
  4. No, I know MT is a traditional martial art and maybe I misuse the term TMA because of this exception, anyway I listed MT between the combat effective arts.
  5. The problem behind many discussion in this forum and behind this article is always the same. Why do you take MA? The answer to this question should address anyone's choice in their martial art journey. If your main drive in taking MA is for learning how to fight in actual self defence situation and there are good possibilities you are going to use this ability (I'm talking about self defence professionals like policeman, prison guards, bouncers, body guards etc.) you should take martial arts that have maximum combat efficiency, Muay Thai, Kickboxing (including also San da), JKD, Krav Maga are good examples of that. All the bouncers and some policemen I know, practice kickboxing and practice full contact sparring.(the other arts I mentioned are not so popular here in Italy). If you take MA as personal enhancement (as a art or just as an healty hobby), you better take some of the TMAs; because I think that TMAs are more enjoyable and even more healty (less injuries). Self defence in TMAs should be viewed as an extra bonus, let's say, doing TMAs you certanly improve your self defence capability, but this may or may not be adeguate to an actual self defence situation. So I'm not surprised that a person with TMA training and point sparring practice came out badly in a full contact bout with an actual full contact fighter. I made my choice to be a MA practitioner were self-defence is not my main drive but this is my personal choice.
  6. I don't know there are so many styles you never know... Do you mean it is a fake?
  7. Also red is good unfortunately our belt system does not foreseen this color
  8. I'm not in isshin ryu I'm in Goju and I recently switch to karate from kickboxing. I just want to say that I'm enthusiast of my new art, I think that karate if is well tought it is very good. Have Fun!
  9. Congratulations. I'm going to take my first test soon.
  10. I inhale through the nose, and as WW said exalation depends on the technique.
  11. Being a newcomer I'm working at my first kata (Taikioku) and some kihon.
  12. If we take the interpretation of Dr.Yang Jwing-Ming (he has done extensive study about it) that chi is basically the bioelectricity in our body, I think that learing how to focus that energy for its use in MA application is not in conflict with christianity.
  13. White all the way both in Karate then in Tai chi. I did more then one year in kickboxing but we had no ranks.
  14. Thanks, I will be half of next months.
  15. Hi, welcome to KF.
  16. Welcome to KF.
  17. Welcome to the forums.
  18. Also I have three forms of Taikyoku I have to learn it for my Yellow belt exam.
  19. Good. Is there a website where we can get more info about the event?
  20. I don't know about the market prices in your area it looks a bit high anyhow. The strange thing is that is only once a week, I think the bare minimum should be twice a week, the more is the better. Is it karate or Ju-jitsu? If it is karate I think it is easier to make some practice at home (without partner).
  21. Yes trying is the best thing you can do first. The lack of a ring is not a problem also in my kickboxing class we did not have a ring, you usually start to compete, if your goal is that, after at least two years of training (I've got this time scale from a friend of mine who formerly competed in kickboxing). So don't worry about the ring.
  22. In Italy maybe this problem is related with age. When I go to Tai Chi I'm not the oldest student and nobody find strange that I'm doing that. Instead when I go to Karate I'm the oldest in the class. Before my karate adult class there is the kids class and when I arrive dressed in my gi (with my white belt on so they see I'm not an instructor) I see the mothers of the kids having my same age (I'm in my 40s) looking me with a "what this old fart's doing here" look. Somebody should educate them to the fact that karate can be taken at almost all ages surely before 60.
  23. In my kung fu school the main instructor is the head of a small world wide school organization called WCKA. I think he is something like 7 chieh (seven degree Black Belt). He studied northern shaolin, tai chi chuan and Ba qua with a Chinese Grand Master (former head of the organization now deceased) who was 10th chieh. I call him Maestro (little less formal then master but about the same). In my karate school the main intructor is 4th dan and I call him by the name.
  24. Try this site: http://inosanto.com/wrapper.php?file=instructorlist_index.htm There is a search engime where you can locate JKD Kali escrima instructors qualified by Dan Inosanto who was Bruce Lee student.
  25. Yes I never heard of a such big rate. How much will you pay when you'll pay monthly?
