  1. The most popular style here in Italy is Shotokan which is a mix of Shuri-te and Naha-te (I think). Goju ryu (my style) is also quite popular and is basically Naha-te.
  2. I agree with shotochem my best attribute is my attitude.
  3. Hey TSG this is also my story, the only difference is that you started MA at 10 and I was so unconfident with my physical abilities that I started (by chance) at 42.... . Anyway Britnoob don't worry too much about belts the important thing here is the journey not the destination.
  4. We don't learn the Heians at all we learn the Taikioku instead.
  5. Mine is a loud SHA (short) or SHAAAA long.
  6. I have to vote for my style. But I do not know if is the best or not I never studied another karate style but Go ju ryu is fun anyhow....
  7. Ok I owe you a recipe. I can teach you many spaghetti sauce if you like.
  8. Welcome to the forums.
  9. Welcome to KF. What SBG stands for?
  10. Impressive example of Mcdojoish behavior. Do they use it as advertisement?
  11. Hello Zen_Diva from the very nice town of Vancouver. (I've been there once). Kata practice is fun but I enjoy also sparring. What style of Karate are you in?
  12. G'day mate. Welcome to KF.
  13. .... and the bacon did not burn!?!?! Then you do what? You eat the blob or the grease Is it any good?
  14. I think that anybody can benefit from karate both physically and in terms of self-developement, I totally agree with BJJShotoshe about his/her advices of what should be your attitude towards training. As a consequence my additional advice is: if you really like it the more you train the better it is, I go twice a week just because my schedule does not allow me to go more frequently.
  15. Yes terribly boring... next time we need to modify substantially the team (with all that spitting around ) we'll see what happen.
  16. Yes Gatorade and all its clones (there are lots of them) is mostly water, various kind of salts and (not always) maltodextrine. It is good for rebalancing the mineral content of the body after/during intense physical activity. Different things are red bull and clones which contains also stimulants.
  17. Welcome to KF! Lots of martial artists from all styles here.
  18. I think considering the arts you mentioned JKD can be a valid choice, but check if that school does the combo JKD/Kali-Escrima (Dan Inosanto's method) because I think this is one of the best integrated self defence method; it combines the unarmed techniques of JKD to the typical Kali-escrima capability of transforming almost everything you can think of into a weapon. Concerning the sparring issue this depends on the school if done wisely it may be not too harmful.
  19. I think if the operation is done correctly it will be not a bad idea. Olympic games are a large promotional vehicle and this may attract people to the art in all its sides. In my dojo we have two classes the traditional class and the competitor class, the traditional class is for everybody and the other is for point sparring competitors. However the curriculum is not as separate as it seems, we (I'm in the traditional class) also do sparring not as much as them but we do, and also they do kihon, kata and all the traditional part of the curriculum (not as much as we do but they still do). I think that the popularity that may arise from the olympics may bring people also to the traditional side, especially if they have an age where you cannot enter in an open competition. BTW why this thread is not longer a poll
  20. Sorry, I understand, but since they are experts they should know that in MA everyone has its own learning curve.
  21. No they are stances, dachi means stance Sanchin Dachi and Seiko Dachi are stances that you find in the first group of katas you learn when you start Goju (i.e. Taikyoku katas)
