  1. San Ken Ryu is a unique style itself, but it's a blend of shotokan, shorin ryu and goju. I'm most interested in a shotokan or isshin ryu dojo, but anything where I wouldn't be totally lost at the beginning would be the best.
  2. Considering your signature, I'm starting to worry about you Sam Shot.
  3. Loved it! So stupid that you've got to love it!
  4. I asked my friend yesterday what styles they were, but to be honest I can't remember what he said. I'll try to write them down when I get there tomorrow. I'm giddy at this opportunity! I've never participated in any other style before!
  5. Hey, Strangepair, can you recommend me a dojo? I'm moving to Parsippany in the summertime.
  6. I'm very happy where I am. I don't think you can learn much at all from a book. You can supplement your learning, but that's about it. What's wrong with karate and TKD? If you can make those 5 miles, then go! You're not going to learn much from someone who doesn't know how to teach a style. What's so important about ninjitsu? If you're in a class, in a good school, you'll learn. Which is more than you're doing now.
  7. Bunkai is the meaning behind every move.
  8. I won't claim to be as skilled as AnonymousOne, but I agree with him. I think you learn a whole lot more by sparring with no equipment and learning to pull your techniques (either by not hitting to the head, or by really pulling body shots), than one does by suiting up in a ton of armor and having no fear of being hit. I've only worn gloves and headgear once, and that was because of tournament rules. I was really uncomfortable, and I don't think you would be as prepared as someone who spars without equipment were a real-life fight to break out.
  9. "Est Sularus oth Mithas" It means "My Honor is My Life." It's from a set of fantasy novels, but I really do try to live by that.
  10. I don't really know, JKD. I will ask my friend/coworker tomorrow. I'm really, really looking forward to this. One of my Senseis tells me that the biggest flaw in our style is that there is virtually know holds/grappling involved. This thing on Saturday should really improve me as a fighter.
  11. I have ZERO experience in this style of the martial arts. My school is a karate one, with influences of Shotokan, Shorin Ryu, and Goju. My friend trains at this JJ school, it's in Harlem, NY. I'm going to it's open house next Saturday, and I'm really looking forward to it. If somebody could please tell me what to expect, I'd really appreciate it.
  12. At my dojo's Shiai (rank ceremony, held 2x a year) yesterday, there were a few "guest Senseis" there to watch. Now, the kids and the adults Shiai's are held seperately, the kids' being 2 hours earlier. During the kids Shiai, this "guest Sensei" was giving a motivational speach to the kids. I was just sitting in the audience observing, and waiting for my Shiai to begin. Anyway, he said to the kids, A Black Belt is a White Belt who didn't quit." Now, I understand his point. Don't give up, keep at it, ect.. But is what he said true? Can anybody, who is a healthy individual, and puts in the time and effort earn a black belt? And I'm not talking about a BB from some McDojo (Tiger Schulman's is the local McDojo), I'm talking about a real, hard earned ranking.
  13. Just don't be around them. When they light up, go out. You'll be happier and healthier, and they'll get the message if they want you around.
  14. I'm a green belt, and I'd be testing later on tonight if I didn't miss about 4 months since the last Shiai. Getting married and breaking a toe will do that, though.
  15. I'm in. I love baseball, I love fantasy baseball, and it's both fun and easy to do!
  16. 90 minute classes in my dojo. But, in answer to your question, some Wise Man would probably say, "a lifetime."
  17. Maybe a new fantasy baseball thread would get peoples attention, Patrick.
  18. Ah, Patrick, a Yankee fan I can respect. You got it!
  19. A real Yankee fan can tell you who played SS before Jeter came along. There are just way too many bandwagon jumpers.
  20. NY Mets. If I were to start a yahoo karateforumsfantasy league (with Patrick's permission to use the name, of course), would anybody be willing to join?
  21. Led Zeppelin. I like Billy Joel a lot too.
  22. "Man who fart in church sits in his own pew."
  23. Awesome time for me. Wifey got me a 6 pack plan of Mets tickets. That's about the most romantic thing that's ever happened to me, that I can really appreciate!
  24. I will let you know the next time I'm in the area, but it won't be tonight, or this weekend. Wifey and I have some 'alone time' to catch up on.
