How could you possibly mention Mallrats without mentioning every other Kevin Smith movie?? Mallrats is by far the worst out of all of them, and you miss half the jokes if you haven't seen Cleriks before hand!

That list is very impressive, KK'75. How about it? -

Feel like PMing the info to somebody who hasn't pissed you off with outrageous claims (yet )? -
Hey, I'm just offering an idea in addition to exercise. The exercise is what's needed.

Not sure. As my profile says, it's a combination of 3 styles. I don't know what parts of each style are incorporated. -
First time sparring: broken ribs or normal pain ?
krunchyfrogg replied to goedikey's topic in Health and Fitness
Unless you punctured a lung, doctors won't do anything, even if you did break some ribs. You'd know if you punctured a lung. My advice is to just take it a little easy. -
Take a peek at The South Beach Diet (you can get the book on Amazon.com). It's kind of like a 2-week atkins diet, then it lets you work just about everything back in, for a healthier lifestyle. I only recommend it because it worked for me. Once I started working karate into my life, I was allowed to eat even more. The only difference in my diet now and my diet before I started (which was about 3 months ago), is that I avoid sugary stuff, and I don't eat white bread, white rice, or white potatoes. For exercise, I'd just try walking for an hour. Doesn't have to be running or anything nuts, just walk away from your house for 30 minutes, turn around and walk back!

Thanks for the help, everybody. I'm quoting this passage above because it brings up an interesting point: I don't really know what I want, besides to have the feeling like I'm not totally lost when I join this new school. I figure, in about 10 months time (3-4 classes a week), I should be Yellow Belt by then (maybe higher, I've never actually asked anybody how long it's taken them to advance. One of the rules on my dojo's website is to "not be concerned with how fast you advance"). Anyway, I really think I'll be Yellow Belt. I had achieved that rank in this same school as a small child in about 6 months, if I remember correctly. So 10 months as an adult isn't an unreasonable expectation. Anyway, my point is that I want my knowledge to translate into my new style, whatever that may be. I'm open to any suggestions. -

Looks nice, but Piscataway is almost an hour away from Parsippany. My final decision won't be made for quite some time, and there's a distinct possibility that my school will be close to my workplace insetad of home (hopefully the two won't be too far apart... I hate commuting and I''m very lucky to live about 10 minutes from my current workplace, and I live under my dojo). -

I'm really not sure what kind of shorinryu. The school I'm in now is a combination of those three styles. I'd just like to move into something that I'd feel comfortable in. As for travel, the closer the better. I'll be starting a family, and I'd like to be as close to home as possible. Just a week now. As I said above, I'm flexible, I just don't want to feel like I'm starting all over again. -
What's with everybody misspelling this word here? Is it an inside joke?

I'm moving to Parsippany, NJ. The styles I'm learning now are Shorin Ryu, Goju, and Shotokan. Any of them would be fine. I just want to be taking something. -
Is this usually difficult?

I appreciate the advice, Tibby, but I think you're slightly misinformed with this diet. I've been on it long wnough that I'm into "stage 3," which means that I basically just try to avoid sugar and enriched carbs. Baiscally, as long as I don't break down and have white bread, white rice, or candy, I'm doing pretty good.

Thanks for the help. Yes, I will ask my sensei again. He just showed me yesterday for the first time. I'd just like to impress him by doing it correctly the next class I have.

I'm the new guy around here, and I've just started Karate (I've been to two classes so far). For the past 2-3 months, I've been on the South Beach diet, which is kind of like the Atkins (low carb), except it allows you to slowly work in things that Atkins never would allow. This diet also encourages you to stay away from bad fats and red meat, while traditional low carb (see Atkins) tell you to eat as much bacon, steak, ect. as you'd like. Anyway, I just wanted to know if this type of dieting could have any advese affect on my Karate regimen. I'd hate to stop dieting, because I've lost so much weight, and I think continuing on the diet and adding Karate can only do good. Again, I just don't want to put my health at risk, and any advice I could hear from you guys and gals would be appreciated. TIA

Wow, this is really going to help me catch up. Half the time in class, I'm saying, "What the heck are they saying?" and I'm just following along. I'm going to print these and study at work Monday. Thanks again! EDIT: Two of the links don't work, you might want to update your thread: http://moosulkwan.com/terms.html http://www.traditional-karate.com/atk/Reference/terms.htm -
Hey everybody. I just got home from my second class, and I want to know how to tie my belt so that another student won't have to show me next time. Is there a website with illustrations that somebody could point me towards? TIA!

Hello everybody. I've just started practicing Karate, as a matter of fact, I just got home from my second class. There are a lot of reasons I joined, such as physical fitness and mental discipline. Anyway, I hope I foung a new posting home.
