  1. It's another one of those new low-carb diets, but has several differences from the most popular: Atkins diet. SB is a very strict diet for about 2 weeks, where all you can have is protein. You're supposed to avoid having a lot of red meat as well. After those two weeks are up, you're encouraged to start taking in carbs, as long as they're coming along with a lot of fiber. you're never supposed to go around eating as much steak and bacon as you'd like, as is encouraged by many other diets. The diet is actually geared towards diabetics, and people with heart problems. Since I have both problems in my family, I thought I'd take advantage of the diet (and lost about 25 pounds doing so), and hopefuly I'll stave off heart disease and diabetes as well (I work in a hospital, and have been getting blood tests. So far, my readings are all coming back much better than before!)
  2. Bruce Lee needs to lose weight??!?!?!?!?! j/k If it helps at all, I lost a lot of weight on the South Beach diet, and highly recommend it. I also started taking karate after starting the diet, and I am doing well in karate, despite the lack of a high carb diet.
  3. The Renshi of my style used to break sheets of ice with his head at Shiai's!
  4. Thanks a lot for that link... LOL! I was hoping for a different viewpoint, as my Sensei printed that exact article up a few days ago and showed it to me!
  5. That better be a joke, especially considering what Mr. Cigar was doing in the White House! [male pig]BTW, what's a thread like this doing without pics?[/male pig]
  6. Which is correct? What does the word actually mean?
  7. Too bad you can only vote once. I wanted to get in shape (I started a year before my wedding). I also wanted to know how to better defend myself. I need more discipline in my life as well, and I thought it would be a fun activity (more fun than watching TV or surfing the 'net, and now I enjoy it more than Baseball, and you can't play baseball in the winter anyway!). I also happen to live under a dojo, and I really don't have any excuses not to take karate.
  8. Say that again, EvilTed... BTW, as an X-Ray Tech, if all you hurt was your feet, 12 X-Rays are too many. I don't look at it as "hijaking" at all. I feel as if I've learned something (and I'll take it all with a grain of salt). My real worry is finding a good school when I move, and even knowing what to look for in a good school. This may be straying off (my own) topic a bit, but how do you know you have a good school (besides avoiding Tiger Schulman)?
  9. Wow, thanks! I'm moving in 9 months, and I'm looking at a school that teaches Shorin-Ryu and Goju. Coming from my current school (Shorin-Ryu, Goju, Shotokan), I was hoping for a good match. After reading your post (and many other smaller posts in this thread), I'm convinced that this will be a good match.
  10. From what I can see, average is about 6-8 years. My school refuses to let anyone who isn't done with puberty to take their Black Belt test.
  11. Wow, you sound just like my Senseis. Takyoko Shodan is the second kata my school learns (Empi Kata is first), but we're all taught that TS is the most important, forming the base of almost everything we do.
  12. Sorry for taking so long to respond. It is my understanding that the Renshi of our stye, who has since passed away, was a master of all three styles. He blended them into one style when he started this school.
  13. Wow.
  14. Hey everybody. I belong to a school that teaches a combination of all three of the above styles. Out of curiousity, what is the emphasis of each style? I'm not sure what parts of which style I'm learning, and it would be interesting to have a little more insight in this respect. TIA!
  15. My boss had the same problem, and he told me his doctor gave him some medication. He doesn't sweat through his shirt anymore, so something must be working!
  16. Cut your losses. You don't want any long term problems with your knees.
  17. A kata is a practiced set routine in fighting imaginary people. I'm overweight too (although I have lost a good amount of weight since starting karate). I'm not anything like Fat Bastard from the Austin Powers movies, I'm just a little overweight. Anyway, diet is still needed, and I try to run in addition to karate. Remember: some people just have a body type where they're going to be more heavy-set than others. No matter what I do, I know I'll never be thin. But that doesn't mean I'm not fit.
  18. Thanks for the well wishes. All I got this week (so far) is one of the worst colds I can remember. I'm missing my favorite new hobby (I've only done karate for about a month) as well as work.
  19. Show those X-Ray Techs some love!
  20. I'm just kidding, Strider. Sorry for the late response to let you know that. Haven't had a chance to call yet. To be honest, I'm not really sure what the right questions to ask would be.
  21. It's the school above my apartment. I was sick of hearing the noise every class, so I decided to sign up.
  22. Balance both membership price, and proximity to the school. Whatever is closest and cheapest is probably best for you. Don't sign any contracts without trying the class one or two times first.
  23. Thanks for the advice, I'm looking forward to your next post. NOTE: I fixed some grammatical errors in my previous post.
  24. I e-mailed that first link you put up in Fairfield, and things look pretty good. I only have to go off of their website and the e-mail response I got from the Sensei there, but the response was very good, and the website makes it look like it could be a decent school. I don't know about the cost or anything like that yet (contract status, ect.), but I did get a free week's pass there, which helps a lot.
