  1. I live in Morris Plains, NJ, and desparately want to get back into Martial Arts after being away from it for about a year and a half (injury and moving). Anyway, does anybody know of a good school near Morris Plains, NJ? The zip code is 07950 here. If there is any other info I can give, I'll gladly do so. TIA
  2. I'm looking for a style that both my Wife and I can do together. She's terrible when it comes to aerobic exercise, and is looking for something to tone up and be better at self-defense. I've done a style that was mostly shotokan before, but I got hurt and have been out of the game for a while now. I'm out of shape and would like to get back in the game. We both moved, so we have a clean slate to choose a style. Thanks for all of your suggestions!
  3. I originally posted this same topic a while back, and I guess it was locked after a while (it's been over a year and a half since it was replied to). Anyway, I don't really care what style (although I'd like to see all of my choices and hear opinions), and I'd love to start training again (it's been over six months since I've trained, and I'm not in the best shape). If anybody can help me find a dojo in the area, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
  4. Dayum, know somebody like that?RE: Shorinryu Sensei: Is there a more practical style similar to Aikido (using one's momentum against them) that you'd recommend?
  5. If anybody knows how I can search for schools by area, please let me know! I know I've been away for a long time (personal life, injury, and I moved), but I feel a longing to come back to the martial arts. It sounds really weird, but just a few nights ago, I had a dream that I should give Aikido a try. Who knows? EDIT: If it helps with the search, the area code is 07054.
  6. Have you tried ebay?
  7. I agree w/ SR. Something smells a little fishy about a doctorate degree in Martial Arts Philosophy from a school called American Martial Art University.
  8. First, allow me to say "congratulations" to you and your future wife. Second, as a guy who went through the same exact thing 7 months ago, let me say that my karate training definitely helped a lot with the dancing lessons.
  9. Oh man, there are so many bad ones. Many people would normally never even hear of.
  10. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. If it works for you, then why stop? I don't mean to offend anybody with my above statement. I tried having a cup before class, and noticed no difference in my performance than if I hadn't drank coffee. Well, I hardly ever get enough sleep, and have been that way my entire life. My diet is pretty good, although I could do with losing a few pounds. Stress? Of course I've got stress. Who doesn't?
  11. I wear ankle weights all of the time, except at the dojo. It really does help (I feel) with my energy and endurance. I would never kick with the things on though.
  12. http://1konacoffee.com/ There's the link. As I said, I tried this coffee while I was there, and it was awesome! I also brought some home for my Dad, and he thought it was great too.
  13. I'm 29 years old, and a coffee fanatic. I enjoy it this time of year more than any, because I have given it up for Lent for the second time (Lent's over, coffee is IN!!). I got married this past September and we spent our Honeymoon in Hawai'i (split time between Oahu and Kauai). This is where I was introduced to Kona Coffee, which is undoubtedly the best coffee ever brewed. Kauai had it's own coffee which was really great too! There was a store there that had shipped through online purchases. I'll post the link when I find it, so you guys can sample the best coffee on the planet (IMHO) if you want! :D :D
  14. Darn, I really thought this would take off.
  15. Oh, I know what you mean now. I learned how to step in kiba dachi by lining myself up on one floorboard and walking across the whole dojo, on only that board. It was a great suggestion from my Sensei! If you're watching kids at a playground, try it on a plank of wood, or the edge of the sandbox. If you're at school or work (and nobody will make fun of you for doing something a little out of the ordinary), try it on a certain tile pattern on the floor. Make sure you keep checking yourself until it feels right.
  16. I just saw Tim Curry on stage. He's starring in "Spamalot" and if anybody is in NY, I strongly urge that you go and see this musical. I laughed for 3 hours straight! RHPS is funny, but I'm just not into it like many are. People dress up in costumes to see this show. Freaky!
  17. ...or something stronger? I find myself run down and tired after work sometimes, and I need a pick-me-up before class. Any suggestions on what I should do?
  18. What do you mean 'going from a kibadachi into a kibadachi'? Do you mean stepping in kibadachi? My hardest stance is a kokutsudachi, bar none. It's the hardest whether I'm doing kata, sparring, stepping, anything.
  19. Thanks MonkeyGirl!
  20. Thanks a lot!
  21. Samurai Shotokan (I'm not picking on you, I swear!), are you sure that's the same actor? I thought the same thing, but my wife is sure that it's not the same actor. Is there any way to find out for sure? Re: OC: its a soap opera for teenagers/early 20's. Just like 90210 and all of it's spinoffs/shows other stations are recreating (which, IMHO, is almost as bad as reality TV).
  22. OK, I had a great time! Learned quite a bit, but most of all, my eyes were opened to a whole new world yesterday! The styles taught there were called Sanucu Ryu, Kumite Ryu, and one other. I hope I didn't butcher the spellings. Wow, I'm still very impressed. Coming from a background of shotokan, shorin-ryu, and goju, The Sensei had to constantly tell me to relax my muscles.
