  1. I don't like it myself, but Wifey refuses to give it up, so I may as well cancel my service (which sucked too), and we can share the bill.
  2. Hey everybody. My dojo has decided to enter itself into a tournament for the first time in quite a long time (8-10 years). I'm 28 years old, I'm a green belt, and have been practicing for about a year now. I've never been in a tournament, so I have no idea what to expect. All I know (so far) is that this tournament will have sparring and kata contests. I know it's not full contact (my Sensei described the point system as being closer to a game of "tag" than real sparring), but I'll have to wear padding (I've never done this either). Can anyone please give me some advice, tips, anything? I have no idea what the atmosphere will be like, and any and all advice is welcome. TIA
  3. Pacificshore: I found a place, but it didn't work out. I ended up just doing other things, and had the time of my life. Thanks for the help everybody!
  4. Just don't kick the bag while wearing the ankle weights and you should be alright. Where would one get a vest? I use the ankle weights but never heard of a weighted vest. Do you feel like it helps?
  5. Hi everybody. I just got married, and wifey refuses to give up AOL. So I decided to save some cash (we're both strapped right now) and use her AOL account when I need to go online. We still live apart during the week, and there is a problem if we both need to get online at the same time (the same screen name can not be online in different locations at the same time). How can I add another screename to the account? It's my understanding that AOL allows something like 8 screen names, and we might both be able to access the internet if we're signing on seperately. TIA BTW, I'm using her AOL dial-up account right now.
  6. Matt, I know you're fairly new to the martial arts (under a year). Your enthusiasm is great, but my only suggestion would be that you make sure that a tattoo is really what you want, not something someone on a message board told you was cool. What if you get a tattoo and then decide that you're not into the martial arts anymore? I'd just suggest thinking long and hard before getting a tattoo, because it's expensive, painful, and worst of all: permanent.
  7. I lost a bridesmaid to this storm (wedding is Saturday)! I don't understand her: She has a plane ticket out of there, but she'd rather stay in her house.
  8. Thanks a lot, I'll give it a shot. BTW, I found out I'll be near Princeville for a lot of time. A dojo near there would be ideal. ... A word of advice. Concentrate on making your new bride happy and spending the time with her instead of working out. Unless of course, she's going to go with you and try a class? If it's just you..pass on it bud. The grief and resentment aren't worth the hour or two of enjoyment on your part, because she'll NEVER let you forget it! Women are funny that way. Thanks for the advice, but she's scheduled to take a tennis lesson herself at the same time. We both put these things on our registry, and they've been bought for us. It's something that is totally cool between us (and was her idea, actually). I'd most like a school teaching either kajukenbo or lua, styles native to Hawai'i.
  9. Sorry for waiting about 6 months to respond, but it's definitely something to think about!
  10. (oops, posted this in the karate forum, while it's probably more suited to this forum) I'll be leaving for Hawai'i in a week for my honeymoon, and somebody bought me a karate lesson through my online registry! I'd like to take this chance to take a class in Kauai'i, because that's where I'll have the most free time, but a school suggestion in Maui would be welcome as well. I'm most interested in taking a class in some style unique or native to the Hawai'ian islands. Any and all help is welcome. Thanks in advance!

  12. I had a dog, now I have a cat. My doggie passed away just over a year ago, and I miss him more than anything. The cat was taken in when my fiancée's Aunt couldn't take care of him anymore. He's great, but I miss that dog so damn much, and I'm much more a dog person than a cat one.
  13. Thanks, I'll check it out!
  14. Evil Ted: I'd like you to look through any and every post of mine and find one time I've insulted World Oyama Karate. All I've done is question online teaching, and asked about how it works. As a matter of fact, in both this thread and previous ones, I've expressed interest in actually joining World Oyama Karate, as I'm moving in the next six months and need to find a new dojo. Why are you so defensive about your style when all I'm doing is asking questions? supacoopatroopa: According to their website, World Oyama Karate still offers online training.
  15. Sensei walked across stomachs during crunches and made me fart. Real loud one too.
  16. Great story, you literally had me laughing out loud!
  17. I do not intend to offend you or your style in any way, and I really did consider joining World Oyama Karate, but I was very turned off when I found out that you could pass your white belt test while studying at home and doing things on the internet. LINK Are they still doing this? I know the style has a very good reputation, and when I mve (within the next 6 months), I'm going to need to find a new dojo.
  18. My advice to you is to go to the dojo where you'll learn the most, and be most comfortable executing the techniques. Personally, I couldn't tell you the difference between the two styles, my dojo has it's own martial art, and shotokan and shorin-ryu are both heavy influences in it. I don't know which parts of my training come from which school of teaching, however. I really enjoy my dojo, but I do have a fear that when I move, and have to find a new dojo (this is the only San Ken Ryu dojo in existence), I'll be totoally lost when I do find that new dojo. Oh well, I won't be the first, nor the last, karate-ka who had to start over from white again (I'm a green belt, just like you).
  19. I'm not trying to gauge what the best MA sites out there are. The reason for this thread (ultimately) is to get to know the other posters out there by seeing what their interests outside of the martial arts are.
  20. I spend some time on https://www.baseballboards.com (a baseball site, all teams), and http://pub4.ezboard.com/btheovertime36660 (a Mets message board), as well as http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/index.php (which is about movies and DVDs). Where do you post?
  21. Labor Day weekend... 33 days away!
  22. Thanks for this. You're inspiring me to get into the dojo more in the weeks leading up to my wedding day.
