  1. A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose is a rose is a AAAA THAT PERSON WAS CRAZY ANYWAY.
  2. I have the master text and the guard passing one, and they're both great books.
  3. Bleh. I was enjoying this thread up until the traditional MA wet blanket attack.
  4. Well, this might also come down to what art we're training in. I do jiu-jitsu, and you can "kick someones *" without hurting them in the least, and they can still work on an important part of their game. (countering submissions) Even if I get totally dominated by someone, I learn which of my moves or defenses work better/worse, and I might pick up a new trick, or learn how to avoid a sub I've never seen before. Plus, if they tap me in 1 minute its not like we can't just get up and start over again 10 more times. I can see how things might be different for a striking art.
  5. Ok guys... by no mercy I didn't mean kill them if they lose. You'll do a person worse than you a disservice by just playing with them rather than going full go. I wouldn't want the people who are much better than me to lower their level to just above mine, I'd rather get my butt kicked and learn from it. I haven't had my lungs torn out yet either...
  6. Some martial arts also seem to get in a rediculous phase where it's all just a big review session. It's one of the big things that drove me away from TMA a while ago. Good luck. Look for another way to keep learning if that's what you want.
  7. Sparring is about learning.... to win. If you just want to learn a technique do a drill. Sparring is about making your techniques work against a resisting, responding person. By its very nature it's competitive. You'll do your partner the most service by showing no mercy - supposing you're somewhere around the same level.
  8. It's called "Corking" the bat when you do that. It's illegal to do because it makes the bat lighter and springier, so the ball goes furthur.
  9. They sell these things... (yeah that's descriptive).... bandages.... They're sold at the store as blister prevention things, they're plastic-like ovals that stick on your feet and take the friction. They USED to be called "Compeed" bandages, but they changed the name in the past couple years. They're meant to stay on your feet for several days at a time, so they should stay on your feet for at least a practice. The only down side is that they're kind of expensive, like $1 each, so it'd probably be $2 every practice or two... but hey... what's $6-8/week when you're foot comfort is at stake.
  10. Are you worried a brick wall/tree is going to attack you or something? Learn to punch correctly and you won't break your hand in the off chance you have to throw a punch in a real fight.
  11. That can't be normal.
  12. Someone has an essay to write.
  13. If you're thinking about a BJJ book, look at the "Master Text", it's really good. http://www.jiu-jitsu.net/supplies.shtml
  14. I'm not an expert, but having done high school wrestling and bjj, bjj will teach you some bad habits for folk wrestling, and emphasizes fighting on the ground more than getting to the ground. Wrestling gives you a great skill base for jiu-jitsu though.
  15. Yay! No more unfortunate children from the year of the ram/sheep/goat.
  16. It probably is suicide inducing if its half as depressing as the book. When I saw this thread I thought you meant subbing as in bjj subbing...
  17. That list doesn't really represent much. If you ran into me (or probably most of the people that post here) we wouldn't attack like that. In real life people CAN think and react. They won't just run at you wildly like the bad guys in a Ninja Turtles movie.
  18. Work smarter, not harder Or work hard and smart and see the best investment for your time.
  19. orangejuice- Actuallly you make some great points. My post was referring to this: Sorry I wasn't more clear.
  20. Are you really that surprised that self defense is the thing people want most in a martial art? That's primarily what martial arts are for. It even seems that better sport oriented MA's are more closely connected to actual applicability to combat. Muay Thai matches are a whole lot more interesting than TKD to watch, while they're both still "just a game."
  21. You'll learn about trying to use logic around here.
  22. Oh, and he's not the master of Tang So Do, he's the M@aster.
  23. Master of one trade... there's serious deficiency everywhere else.
  24. 'Cause diversity is good.
