Thanks for that informative post. -
guard position
Reklats replied to Vito's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Well, if they're in your closed guard you're holding their wrists or pulling them in close. Or sitting up and going for overhooks if they reel back trying to get room to strike. If they're kneeling/standing in your open guard you're pushing them away with your knees and/or feet. They shouldn't have much nut striking ability. Even if they try they offer their head for you to hit. -

Taking multiple MA's poll and question
Reklats replied to Spaceman's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It depends on what you're mixing. If you're doing two combat focused arts, they'll complement each other and you'll become a better fighter in both. However, if you were to do kickboxing and some ubertraditional karate type art, and the karate guys were getting pissed because you were doing your karate square dancing moves slightly different than exactly how they showed you.... that'd be hell. -
Easier said than done.

I see the average striking art as some form of kickboxing. You need to do some real grappling before you can understand completely I guess. To me, "diving in" is not playing to the bigger person's strength. It's quite the opposite. I personally would consider standing and trading blows with a larger person to be playing to their strength. I called you on your wrong statements about grappling because I know grappling well. You made specific comments about grappling that happened to be completely wrong. I didn't try to use my knowledge of pressure points to point out their flaws, I just posted a video. Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this thread.

Size and strength are more easily negated with grappling than your average striking art. Jiu-jitsu is all about isolating one joint or part of your opponent against your entire body. If anything grapplers can compensate better for a stronger/heavier opponent than strikers. You say stuff about weight in grappling a few times in this thread... Try to get an understanding of it before you make any more completely wrong assumptions.

I was going to suggest googling around for "Self hypnosis," but then I tried it myself, and there's not a lot of good info out there. I got 400 sites selling lame books. THis site that I just found: http://www.epub.org.br/cm/n01/bernik/selftraining.htm It's K I N D A like what I did. I did something like Blocks 1 and 2 with less steps, and then 4A. My first recording was about 10 minutes long, but I later made a shorter 4-5 minute one that worked great. My first hypnosis experience went like this: I remember sitting in a chair listening to the hypnotist getting VERY relaxed. Then I woke up (It seemed like instantly later) laughing my * off, with tears streaming down my face. Apparently over the last 5 or so minutes I had been out, and the hypnotist had alternated making me laugh and cry while my friends laughed.

Hole goes in the middle, for clarification. This is a great exercise. Also do finger tip pushups.

https://www.users.muohio.edu/pickerke/dimmak.ram Sorry about the real audio format. It's about 7.5 megs.

Your food must tast really sweet if you do so His nick is Fat Donkey after all... After going to a hypnotist once and finding it REALLY cool, I made a tape of myself talking for a self hypnosis type deal. It made me fall asleep in like 2 minutes just about whenever I wanted, but I never took it any furthur, and I got bored with it after a while. Hm.... I should try and find it. It was pretty cool.

What do you carry self defense wise?
Reklats replied to HongKongFooey's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Hahaha... not that it's important, but...... Speaking of weapons, I have a butterfly knife, probably 4ish inches long, sharpened on one side only. The guy at the gun show where I bought it said it was legal to carry because it was only sharp on one side, but he was wearing a hat that said "The U.N. is not your friend" so I don't necessarily trust what he says. Anyone know if it's USA legal to carry? Certain states only maybe? -
umm... a few years back i had a friendly competition with a bb bjjer. To decrease the chance of injury, we started on our knees. We locked-in, i twisted around and slammed his head into the mat. Had i not held back, and there not been a mat, he would have been out cold.
does bb stand for black belt or blue belt? If black belt, who? -
Why do Traditional Martial Arts suck?
Reklats replied to aznkarateboi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I 100% agree Drunken Monkey. The problem is that lame training methods are almost always synonymous with TMAs. This lame training then fails to filter out the lame moves that don't work. I think it's criminal. It enrages me to think of how we were shown stupid taekwondo techniques, and then told that they were ultra-effective. I really hope no one from my old TKD class ever has to defend themself. -

Some people value effectiveness in the MA that they do. I give a rat's *. Who wants to do a MA that will fail them if they need it? The cool thing about Royce Gracie is that he wasn't big, he wasn't strong, and he wasn't fast. He was just skilled. Using skill alone he beat bigger, stronger, faster, and older(training for longer) opponents, just using effective skills. That's why it's so cool. Doesn't every MA want to do that? What scares me about TMA'ers is that for a while I did a different MA that told people they were learning effective self defense, while in truth average joe blow would've creamed them. It's like selling someone an empty can of pepper spray. -

90% of all fights end up on the ground?
Reklats replied to Mart's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Actually, this idea is really interesting. I have probably 200 videos of people going at it on my computer (in a street/non-training situation). Maybe 10% go to the ground because one or both people WANT to be on the ground. Usually it's just the people getting tired or losing their balance or getting knocked down. Overall of my videos, I bet around 30-40% end up on the ground (and keep going). On a related note: If someone WANTS the fight to go to the ground, it inevitably will. -

Martial artist or just learning to fight?
Reklats replied to IronZ's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
And likewise, we should define people just doing forms and/or point sparring with spiritual and philosophical aspects but no hard contact sparring as dance artists or philosophical/spiritual artists. If some people want to be stingy with the word artist, I'll be fine with just the martial. However, I would say that the way a skilled grappler can work over a dedicated striker is artful
