  1. True, "Unitelligble" is not a word, but unintelligible is. unintelligible- adj 1: poorly articulated or enunciated, or drowned by noise; "unintelligible speech" [ant: intelligible] 2: not clearly understood or expressed [syn: opaque] Number 2 is the definition that applies to you. As for the kicking from the guard thing: I'm assuming the other person isn't incompetent. I wasn't saying that it's not POSSIBLE to kick them in the chin from your guard, but it's a seriously low probability move, therefore not PRACTICAL.
  2. Wow, the top two posts on this page are some of the most unintelligible posts I've ever read. The problem with kicking FROM your guard is if you try and miss, you're guard is as good as passed. Plus you'd need them to be far back in your guard, in which case they're probably dishing out the hurt on you.
  3. Geez.. Are you guys trying to say that the guy getting sat on had the advantage because he maybe coulda rolled out of it? I'm primarily a grappler, but I do enough standup to be competent. You guys should really learn something about grappling.
  4. Excellent. I try to make a post non jiu-jitsu specific and it pays off!
  5. My biggest tip- POSITION!!! If you're on the bottom get your guard, and get the person in tight. He won't be able to strike effectively at all (unless he's a ufc superstar) and you'll be able to pound his ribs into oblivion always, and his head when he leaves that open. If you're on top, don't waste time trying to strike from his guard, get side control or mount before you really start dishing out the strikes.
  6. http://members.westnet.com.au/recruit/Hawaiian_Beatdown.wmv Overall that video is boring, just skip to the part starting at like 3:00 and watch what happens. Talk about being taken out of your "comfort zone" in a fight. He had no idea what was going on until he had essentially lost. (When he was mounted) This is something all you guys should hope to achieve- utter domination not necessarily because you're faster, stronger or punch straighter, but because the other guy has no idea what you're doing or how to effectively resist before it's too late.
  7. I can fight. I hear it's becoming an increasingly rare one.
  8. It's not always about survival. Muay thai kickboxing was never used for survival, it was used to kick ***, which it excels at. Stuff like TKD was made so adults could compete in a safe friendly environment, and kids could learn to behave.
  9. In my style it's not a particularly bad problem, but overall it still bothers me. It's like saying I just laugh and go on studying when I hear about people getting promoted (granted in * gov't jobs) for having fake online degrees.
  10. What ever happened to getting to a point where you just had to kill your master and take his place if you wanted a higher rank? If we maintained some good old fashioned values we wouldn't have this problem.
  11. This is a very common fallacy among traditional martial artists. TKD was never especially uphill in the first place when it came to being effective. People say that a good martial artist can make any ma good, but that's like spraying perfume on a... well, you can probably use your imagination here. It IS fun though, which is why it's so successful. The strength of TKD is it's amusement value, that's why it has thrived so much. Not because tkd practicioners have been using their deadly art to successfully survive for the past 2000 years.
  12. I've never seen a serious injury to a joint as a result of a bjj technique in class. The first thing you learn is to tap whenever something hurts, even if you don't know what's going on. In addition, you'll roll with more experienced people in the beginning, and they'll know how to not hurt you. They'll start teaching you takedowns and all sorts of chokes/locks right away. They might wait a little while before showing you some leglocks. You won't have to worry about using them on anyone for a while though. A wise man once said "Position before submission", and you'll have your hands full with that for the first few months.
  13. Does he fly and stab too? How do you get those two mixed up?
  14. I'm in college, spend plenty of time at bars, and see a decent number of fights on weekends. None of them are ever "random assault" situations. It's always two jackasses choosing to escalate an argument and fight. If one person pulled a knife, got disarmed and stabbed, I say its just like the second person pulled the knife in the first place. They both could've walked away at any point, there isn't a victim in this situation. I've never heard of someone getting prosecuted for defending themself from a mugger when they acted rationally. If someone tries to mug you and you stomp their head in, you've gone too far.
  15. You're probably not paying a whole lot to train in a YMCA or a garage anyway, are you? Where's treebranch?
  16. Master Jules - why don't you carry pepper spray or a tazer for situations like those?
  17. Cash or check.
  18. Make sure your dues are paid.
  19. What are your contract periods going to be like?
  20. A Hundred Years From Now... ... it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a CHILD. - Kathy Travis ^ taken from site GAG. Here's a game for you guys: try reading that website, and seeing how many MA cliches you can count in 30 seconds. My best is 50.
  21. Plus it seems like there are always people out there who are just waiting to die for no reason during an otherwise safe technique. If I had a massive blood clot timebomb in my head, I'd rather die at jiu-jitsu practice than driving on the highway with my family or something.
  22. I took some GNC brand multivitamins -- mega-man or something -- that made my urine look like a light sabre. I bet just about any vitamin would do. The average American/first world country inhabitant probably doesn't even need a vitamin to compliment their 2000+ calorie a day diet.
  23. It's not exactly a reverse triangle -- he doesn't have the arm. It's more of a rear naked choke with the legs. (Yeah, obviously the figure 4 is there, but it's a little different). It looks like it might put more pressure on the jaw than anything. Eye of the tiger: If you ever, ever, get someone over 12 years old to tap to a body scissors of any sort, THEN tell us about it.
