College Scholorships?
Reklats replied to three60roundhouse's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Ha. I remember doing the sat's when you're 12 thing. How rediculous that was. When I took them for real I scored higher on the math half than I did on both when I was in middle school (~13). -
College Scholorships?
Reklats replied to three60roundhouse's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Damn straight. The niche sports are where the huge $$$/person ratio is, with Title 9 and all. Fencing...field hockey...SYNCRONIZED SKATING... CHEERLEADING..! It's a good time to be a girl looking for a sports scholorship. three60roundhouse- after I took my PSAT's a few years ago was when I started getting more mail than my parents did (from all the colleges). Look forward to that. -

Help with the Triangle
Reklats replied to Scorcho's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
The distance thing is a good tip. I hate it when I get stacked attempting a triangle because I never want to let go. I end up getting all smashed and mutilated (wake up the next day with a really sore neck) as I try and make my semi-failed attempt work. -
I've been in a few MATCHES with people that I'm equal to that've gone ~20 minutes until someone tapped. I need like 10 minutes to recover afterwards though.

So... do the same old moves some more, but THINK about them differently by doign forms? Boooring... I once did tkd too (didn't we all?) It made me a decent kicker, but I didn't really know how to use my hands (not truly proficiently) and I didn't have a clue how to fight from the clinch or ground. Then I made a kickboxer friend and all my kicking skills got rocked too, but that's another story... I suggest you take some art that fills in a gap in your knowledge. In your case that would probably be in the hand usage or grappling department.

Do these techniques give you an edge on the street?
Reklats replied to Treebranch's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
People like the ufc because it gives them an idea of what works. Delusional thinking that some crazy traditional attacks are going to work in a fight is a bad self defense strategy, buddy. -
Combat MA --> Sport MA -->Dance MA --> x treme MA

Ok, I don't know what YOU guys interpret feng shui as being. The impression I got of it was as a rediculous interior decorating method. Or do some of you actually practice the deadly art of having your furnitur face north? I think Icetuete got it at least...

Good luck not blocking.

I have absolutely no idea what a boken is. -
Now there's a definition of ki I like!!!

What about the deadly art of kung fu feng-shui

Or move it to the ground When we strike while standing I eventually get tired, and my guard drops...and bad things happen. I'm like Antaeus... separate me from mother earth and I don't have anywhere to draw energy from. When you guys talk about blocking and then immediately striking, don't you just end up blocking their first punch, then trading simultaneous punches with your other hands? Especially if your block is some big sweeping limb attack and not just a deflection? When I block or punch I try to keep my other hand between my face and my opponent.

If the kenjutsu master has become a master by doing kata all day every day and has never actually swung his ...boken...do you swing a boken? Or do you fire it?.... anyway... has never actually tried using his weapon against a resisting dodging counter-attacking enemy, then I'd say its about even money. -

Weren't all these: Butting with the head. Hair pulling. Groin attacks. Striking to the spine or the back of the head. Striking downward using the point of the elbow. Holding the clothes of an attacker. Kicking the head of a grounded attacker. Kneeing the head of a grounded attacker. Stomping a grounded attacker. Kicking to the kidney with the heel. Spiking an opponent to the ground on his head or neck. Holding the gate or the fence. -allowed in the ufc originally? That's why its still so much fun to watch the first few ufc's, and see lots of traditional people get beat down. -
Go to this page and a movie download will automatically pop up. It gets a Reklats (7/10) strong stomach rating. It's probably much worse if you do a grappling art. You have to wait a few secs for the download to pop up. http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/matchvids.cfm?matchid=1065 THAT is a heel hook. *shudder*

Ehhaaaawwwwwbleh. That's the best word to describe my reaction. A couple months ago a guy had a really loose heel hook on me. I started to escape but he had a really baggy tshirt on so I couldn't see my foot or his hands. (I mean really really baggy...disturbingly so) ANyway, out of nowhere my ankle made this sickening gunshot loud snap-crackle-pop noise. Luckily for me it wasn't on quite right so I got away with a sprained ankle. I think the crackle was my joint popping kinda like when you crack your knuckles. Scared the living crap out of me. I hate heel hooks. Now I have this mental blockage to deal with too. Just great. Treebranch- if you've seen people take a heel hook and bear the pain it wasn't a heel hook. They can break your ankle before you even feel the pain. SO friggin dangerous.

Wow, what a brute force move. -
Doesn't he absolutely reek? Doesn't his unwashed gi spread all sorts of pestilence and disease all over the place? I would refuse to go near let alone grapple with someone like that.
