  1. So... there's no sparring card?
  2. Yesterday we sparred pretty hard- starting on our feet, grappling and striking allowed. We wore gloves and headgear, so the injury:fun ratio was low, everyone had a good time and learned a lot. Anyway, the point: I blocked a kick and jammed the middle finger of my left hand pretty badly. It didn't phase me too badly at the time, but today it hurts a lot to bend, and I really wouldn't want to make a fist with that hand. A lot of people do martial arts for self defense, but how often does that training leave you more vulnerable than if you did nothing? My injury was incredibly minor, but think how many times you've seen people limp out on a sprained ankle or wrist, or with broken fingers or toes. I figure I'm only A-game healthy like I'd ideally want to go into a fight about 90% of the time. Do any of you feel the same way?
  3. Well, supposing you're not a day laborer or something, I'm sure your reputation around the workplace will have something to do with it.
  4. So what, if we invade and 10k people die, but only 3k of the people who die actually have US bullets in their bodies, the 7k people who died somewhere in the margin don't count? That website is rediculous.
  5. http://www.iraqbodycount.net Tillman blah blah. How about the people that were bombed in their homes? Were they given an option to die "nobly?"
  6. The article is pretty old. Also, I train lotsa no gi, and most leglocks.
  7. $5?!? You should've just choked him out. What an *.
  8. Yeah, chances are if your dojo has a traditional term for belt, you're beyond our help.
  9. How many different ways are there to tie a belt? I don't think its a big deal. I don't wear my belt much anyway.
  10. rule #1: Position before submission.
  11. I'll have to take another look at the honor code... if someone bites you I'm pretty sure you're allowed to break their arm
  12. Real grappling? or "We do some judo throws in with karate" grappling.
  13. You have your way of controlling someone, I have mine. I've seen people do something similar to your elbow-knee thing, and it looks rediculous. It'd be a lot harder to get someone off your chest.
  14. I went to a resort in mexico once... they had no holds barred water polo matches. I'd never been so tired after something in my entire life.
  15. Except it would be very very hard to "fake teach" bjj. It's not just prancing around the room doing forms. If a person that really took bjj showed up, the game would be over instantly.
  16. http://members.aol.com/nyjiujitsu/triangle.html Maybe that illustrates it better. 1. The right arm does get tied up (in the first picture) and its easy for the bottom guy to use one hand to keep it there if necessary. 2. The thigh of the bottom guys right leg is against the side of the top guys neck. The top guys own arm is against the other side of his neck. 3. Its harder than it looks, especially because bottom guy can use one hand to defend, or use his hips to move the top guy around. 4. There's a little space, I guess it depends how big of a gut the bottom guy has.
  17. I didn't see the choke either until someone demonstrated it on me. It's just as effective as a rear naked choke. Also it's hard to see because they're both wearing white gi's, but the guy on top has his own arm lodged across the front of his throat, and it's very hard to dislodge. Striking to the groin with the left hand would be a very low percentage shot if you could reach at all, and I know from our "watered down rules :)" that a guy can't really punch well from here. If they're smart tehy're more worried about getting out.
  18. These aren't my pics: http://orgs.okstate.edu/bjjc/Triangle.jpg If the guy in this ^^ pic is going to bite anything, its his own arm.
  19. There are some similarities. My double leg takedown has helped me a lot in bjj. It's definately good 1 on 1 competition if that's what you're looking for.
  20. Honestly, as a grappler I'd be more comfy taking mount (sitting on him) first, then maybe working the armbar. I can't see you being fast enough to get it (from standing) without the guy reacting first.
  21. If you do a triangle right they wouldn't be able to bite you. On a side note- triangling someone doesn't require you to be able to lift them off the ground.
  22. Don't worry... when I best you I'll spare your life.
  23. I hear existing in general is bad for joints.
  24. We have lots of names for the same techniques. We don't have to learn phrases like "Thank you very much sensai may I have another" or "Karate brings peace and harmony throughout the galaxy" in japanese/korean/whatever like you guys do.
