I am so excited
SBN Doug replied to spinninggumby's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Good for you. We have a similar trip being scheduled for October. Don't think I'll have a chance to go this year. Apparently the World KSW Championships are going to be held over there this year. Also, I've heard no one will be promoted to Master level (5th) in the USA any more. We'll have to make the trip to Korean when (or if) its time. Have a great time. -
I nice heating pad and some slow stretching might help. You might find some good tips over in the "Health and Fitness" forum as well. Sound like you may have just overdone it a little.

Aikido and Realistic Attack
SBN Doug replied to Shaolin's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Not a bad video. However, though I'm not a BJJ practioner, it didn't look like the grappler got quite in the right place for a take down. I can't really speak for Akido, other than what's already been stated. It seems a little light on the attacks. And, unless I'm misstaken, Segal knows a more combative style of Akido. The traditional one is much less combative. My influence has come more from Hapkido. Kuk Sool Won has incorporated most of the same combative principles of Hapkido, while combining it with the striking principles similar to TKD. It doesn't sound like you need any of the striking, so I would say that Akido would probably suit your needs fine. -
Hey Spooky.

Grappling in TKD
SBN Doug replied to Cory Reynolds's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Phantasmic, You would see all black uniforms, usually a warm up followed by all the kicking and punching drills. Then you would see them break out into pairs for techniques practice. Next, depending on the level of class you're watching, would be weapons. Those are pretty standard, beyond that is up to the instructor. I know of some good dojangs in the Chicago area, met the students and instructors at some of our competitions. Where is the one you're referring to? -
Age and the Martial Arts
SBN Doug replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Kuk Sool Won has the same type of set up. However, junior BBs do not have to learn all the same material, it is a little abreviated. And, the belt is still black. However, they must learn the rest of the material (and test again) to be considered an adult BB. -
That's a busy schedule. Welcome to the forums.

 I've been enjoying your insight into the Korean arts.

I started, in my mind, when I was around 10. Caught sight of my first MA movies, and even saw the MA nature of Star Wars. But I really got hooked when I saw Chuck Norris and Bill Wallace duke it out. The anguish (as badly acted as it may have been) that Chuck showed when he was left with no choice but to kill Bill was really enlightening for me. I started mimicing their movments as much as I could, but never got a chance to study formally until I was a senior in high school. The rest of the story is in the "Bad Teachers" thread.

Sorry. They're thick through my art, so I've never had a need to look for them elsewhere. Besides, for that kind of detail, they'll probably want you to pay for it.

I've never tried the Jap. ones. I thought they just took out the blood and some of the violence. I'd be interested in hearing more of what I apparently have been missing, but it might be better suited in a different forum.

Grappling in TKD
SBN Doug replied to Cory Reynolds's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Hey Taezee, that's good to hear. Kuk Sool Won is probably closer to Hapkido than TKD. However, we do learn a lot of the same jumping, spinning, and jump-spinning kicks. We just don't learn them until a more advanced level. We also do not do a lot on the ground, but we do have enough to counter being taken to the ground and get back up. -
20...oopps, I'm guna have to go edit my last reply to your kata question. You sounded younger. Anyway, welcome to the forums, and DON'T LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON.

That's a little long in my opinion. I had a friend who's father was a master in a Vietnamese martial art, and his dad worked him like that too. Now my friend is an adult, and is burned out on training, and wants nothing to do with it. (edit) Well, now that I know you're 20, its not uncommon. I wouldn't make anyone under about 17 work that hard. [ This Message was edited by: KSN Doug on 2002-02-20 05:25 ]

Mr. Satan??? Is that his name in the Japanese version? Because he's Hercule in the translated to English version.

Lin Kong Jing
SBN Doug replied to ad's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Yeah, and those same guys can probably conjure fireballs out of their palm strike, and create an impenetrable force sheild around themselves. Hey, that sounds like a good plot for an action cartoon. :kaioken: -
Grappling in TKD
SBN Doug replied to Cory Reynolds's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Hey guys, my original post was not intended to have opinions of the system thrown in. I was just interested in comparing/contrasting the different KOREAN systems. Taezee may get mad at me, but I'm as guilty as the next guy for having thought of TKD as mainly kicks. Since Kuk Sool Won depends heavily on grappling, as does Hapkido, I was interested in hearing more when someone said there was grappling taught in TKD. I'm not looking for ratings of its effectiveness compared to a pure grappling art. Does anyone know how Tang Soo Do compares to the above three Korean systems? -
Well done.

Hi Betty, welcome to THE forum!

I have a copy of Shadow Warrior for PC. It was pretty good! I liked the phrases they gave him. Oh yeah, and the girls in the bath houses! :brow:

Ahhhhh, or maybe duhhhhh. Not being from a Japanese art, I had forgotten you could throw them. Thanks.

Sine wave patterns
SBN Doug replied to Bretty101's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Sorry, I only know sine waves from college calculus and physics. Then again, I'm in a Korean art too. Does it refer to a softer version of the pattern?
