If anyone is undecided as to seeing Lord of the Rings, I highly recommend it. I saw it last night, and I can safely say it is the single most amazing movie I have ever seen. I felt the same way walking out of it at 35 as I did walking out of Star Wars when I was 10. It is a long one (3 hrs), but I found myself still not ready to leave when it was over.

I've used some of what I've learned in my dreams, but never called out because of it.

I already have a career, so martial arts will not become my career until I decide to retire from what I do now. I may be in a possition to do that some time in my 40s. I do plan to start a 2-3 time a week club in the meantime. I need to work on my teaching skills. Does anyone else find it as much harder to explain how to do something, than it is to do it yourself?

Hey!! There ain't nuthin sub about our machine guns!! Blast him! Just kidding. Having lived in Texas I can say that there are not nearly as many people wlaking around with guns as most people believe. However, I did think the legislature was INSANE when it passed the "Right to carry" law. They put a bunch of meaningless restrictions on it, but any dumb @#% can still pass them all.

Exactly.

Kung-Pow: Enter the Fist
SBN Doug replied to Iron Arahat's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
This is not the first, and it won't be the last. I've even seen movies out of the far East that put humor into the martial arts. I have also had friends/business associates poke a little fun at me. Especially since Kuk Sool Won doesn't sound as cool in english as lets say Tae Kwon Do. But, it was not meant maliciously, and I'm sure most of these movies are not either. Remember, people tend to mock what they don't understand, or what they feel they can never achieve. -
Well, I've done 4 1in. boards (no spacers) held by three blk belts, with a jump, spin, back, side kick (di tora yup cha gi) for competition. I've done 3 boards with no spacers (held) with most of my other jump kicks. Haven't tried 4 in the others, just haven't really had a reason. I'm sure I could get through them with most. I'm stuck at 3 boads, held with no spacers, on my palm strike. I just haven't been able to focus my speed enough yet to get through 4. 4 with no spacers is basically my goal for any technique. I figure if I can get through that, that's good enough to get through any amount of muscle.

Give this a try. First, make sure you keep your kick between knee and waist heigh, not higher. Next, in your attack stance, extend your arms out to each side. Twist you upper body in the opposite direction of where you intend to spin (this helps you build a little extra torque). Now, use your arms to help sling you into your spin, and stay on the ball of your foot as previously stated. Keep your arms out through the entire spin, and work on spinning fast enough to make your finger tips tingle. Only do 5 to 10 before either switching you stance, or taking a break. As you get better, slowly work the extended arms out of the equation, followed by eliminating the wind up.

Oh I love the Harry Potter one! Happy holidays everyone.

I used to watch the feature movie every Saturday on the Sci-fi channel. Haven't had a chance to see if they're still showing them lately.

Happy birthday, Jack. When do you get to apply for a drivers license over there?

I don't think he means you should learn the firearm to USE it. I think he means that you get better insight into how to defend against a weapon if you know how to use it yourself.

Same here. I've only heard of Tang Soo Do.

How important is speed to you?
SBN Doug replied to Singularity's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
O.k., I'm going to have to break out speed into two types. The speed we focus on is the velocity of out striking point (hand, knee, elbow, etc). We develop velocity after good technique has been achieved. As physics teaches, force is directly related to velocity, as velocity increases so does force. (see physics thread) The speed it looks like your referring to is repeat striking speed. I know some kung fu styles work on multiple hand striking in the blink of an eye, but in the KSW, we train in a full draw back of our hand, which makes it impossible to "flicker" punch like some styles do. We focus more on technique first, then increase speed. Without proper technique, you can injure yourself, and the added speed won't be as effective. Also, its been my experience that a student focusing too much on speed first, develops some really bad tachnique. Which is much harder to work out after-the-fact, than to develop it right from the beginning. -
What dan do you have to open up your own school?
SBN Doug replied to koreantiger81's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Ooo, Ooo, and don't forget the phoney magazine covers you can get yourself printed on. I found that in the first school I ever trained in. It was in a small town, so I guess he figured he could get away with it. It was before internet (yes we survived back then too...no the dinosaurs were already dead), when I contacted the magazine for a back copy, it didn't exist. -

mastertae, I've been enjoying your posts, and insight to the Korean arts. If you get the chance, post some information on yourself over in the Introduction section. -

SBN Doug replied to koreantiger81's topic in Instructors and School Owners
In Kuk Sool Won, we are required to be on record with headquarters as being a practicing 1st degree BB. We do not have to be a master to start our own school. However, we do have to teach everything in the same way the Grand Master has dictated.
