  1. Well put. We are taught that instructors and students bow to one another as a sign of mutual respect. Without the instructor, the student has no way to learn. Without the student, the instructor has no one to teach. In either case, the circle is broken.
  2. If someone is about to shoot me with a gun, from a distance, I'm going to wish I had faster legs!!!!!! But I agree on your point about it depending on the situation.
  3. I'm guessing the point sparring you mean is like the old Karate Kid movie? Every time a point is scored, fighting stops and you both return to starting possitions. I don't like that at all. I preffer to have three judges rotating through the ring, so they see every angle, and combatants keep going for a specified amount of time (scoring points along the way). My absolute preferance is when take-downs are allowed.
  4. It took me a little over 4 yrs. Average in this art is 5-6 yrs for someone training at the dojang 3 times a week. The master making the presentations made a point of telling us that we were "...now ready to begin our martial arts training."
  5. I feel like 7-8 would be the minimum I would teach. And they would be the "just for fun" stuff. Promote them very slowly. At 12 is where KSW recognizes them as being able to learn all the adult material.
  6. I actually don't pay anymore. The only official school nearby only has as high a belt running it as I am. So, I traded off class cost for help in instructing classes. He and I then train together to keep each other sharp on the upper stuff. When I was an under black belt at another school, I believe it was about: $80/mo - month-to-month status $70/mo - on six month contract $60/mo - on one year contract But I've seen tuitions differ at different schools for the same art based on their geographic location in the U.S.
  7. Actually, I'm a Kuk Sool Won practitioner. I started about 8-9 yrs ago. My daughter started about two yrs after that. She was 7 at the time. Since moving to CT, she had a lay off for a while (nearest school is 1hr away). Now she(12) and my son(9) go with me on Fridays. We also have home classes durring the week.
  8. Welcome A bit far for me, but good luck on your search.
  9. On 2001-07-21 16:31, Angus wrote: I'm 18, and 18 for males is supposed to be the sexual peak or something... SO FAR I HAVE FOUND IT ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!! 18 rocks! Well at least in Australia it does cos we are considered adults... Maybe so, but women hit it in their 30s. I'm 35, and am enjoying being in their peak much more than mine. "Hold on honey, I'll be right back after a glass of water". Besides, all those early heart breaks, overbearing father, tests, tests, tests, tests, tests, tests, tests, tests, tests. Count me out of any time travels to before the end of college.
  10. I don't agree. A pressure point attack alone on a standing person may not be the attack of choice. However, combined with another technique, it can help loosen their grip or get them off balance to assist in your take-down.
  11. Some other grappling art would be Akido, Hapkido, and Kuk Sool Won.
  12. I think there's already a thread on this one. My opinion, never sign a contract until you're given the chance to practice a few weeks and decide if you like the style and instructor.
  13. keep your guard up, and don't get caught flat footed.
  14. Yup, that's just how I started. Welcome.
  15. Hey, welcome to the board. Check out the health and fitness section. Kickchick has a lot of good topics for you in there.
  16. I'm the other way around. I'm the upper belt, and my kids are following my lead. It's still just as nice to have them involved. Welcome
  17. Welcome, With those interests, you're in the right place.
  18. Lars, It probably is closest to Hapkido. Doug
  19. Hey!!!!!!!!! Happy birthday! I can't believe you've only been up six months, with that many posts. Shows the qulity you've put into it.
  20. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Be careful if your driving anywhere. High volumes expected on the roadways this year.
  21. I still prefered Mortal Combat. (I not II)
  22. Yeh, but depending on your needs, you can actually upgrade your computer pretty cheap. Memory is dirt cheap, and it's easy to install new components yourself and save any installation costs. Ever since they went to towers, I do a lot of my own upgrades.
  23. Yeh, these are definately not long bows. These are actually the horse bows the Korean horse soldiers would fire from horseback. Still damn hard to pull back with a thumb, though.
  24. You've definately got a point there.
  25. TKD, Why, did you find someone's advise not valid? I have to agree with Patrick. Unless you do background checks on all of us, you'll never know fo sure. I'm 2nd degree black belt in Kuk Sool Won. If that's not good enough, you can call the Kuk Sool Won dojang in Mahopak NY, and ask the owner, KSN Ed Binns, what rank I am. I'm also on record with the Kuk Sool Won Association world headquarters. However, that does not mean that my advice is any better or worse than those that have taken the route of training themselves in a variety of martial arts. So, I guess I'm at a loss as to how this helps you.
