This tale comes from a Catholic elementary school. . . Up at the head table in the cafeteria, one of the nuns had placed a big bowl of bright red, fresh, juicy apples. Beside the bowl, she placed a note which read, "Take only one. Remember, God is watching." At the other end of the table was a bowl full of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, still warm from the oven. Beside the bowl, a little note scrawled in a child's handwriting which read, "Take all you want. God's watching the apples."

First, I'd modify the weapon to fit the situation. They should train with a middle length staff so they can spin on each side without hitting the ground. I've had to practice my mid staff spinning from a kneeling upright position, which would be closer to the ground that sitting in a chair. Everyone in that situation should be able to perform all but possibly one or two of the 15 basic spinning techniques we learn. I would also suggest learning to use their situation to an advantage when possible. They have a strong defensive weapon they should take advantage of.

Couldn't agree more with the way the typical American is turning out nowadays. TKD_M, is this a small club you're in? I only ask because We don't test our adults and kids together. And, we treat the adults the way you would prefer. If they didn't work hard enough to test, they don't. If they didn't make it to class regularly, they don't. If they don't keep up with the others, they have to wait until the next scheduled test. No "extra" tests are ever scheduled to help the keep up.

Not to split hairs, but is that statistic correct? I thought it was 90% of fights, not necessarily martial arts fights. Two guys in a brawl in a bar (esspecially if intoxicated) will inevitably wind up on the ground. But I didn't think the percentage was as high if a trained martial artist was involved (unless of course he's a grappler).

Effective Hook kick
SBN Doug replied to TKD_McGee's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I ususally execute the step behind that KickChick mentioned, or a skip hook. I'm able to generate more speed that way. I try to stay away from the spin hook as well. -

To Bow or not to Bow (?)
SBN Doug replied to KickChick's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
"the bow I am refering to is the second bow, FULL BOW. A respect bow is fine, but a FULL BOW is not." In my art, there is no difference. They are both used as a show of respect. The full one is just used to be fancy at testing, etc. [ This Message was edited by: KSN Doug on 2002-03-06 12:31 ] -

To Bow or not to Bow (?)
SBN Doug replied to KickChick's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
So, you're taking that literally, are you? So under that argument, every man, woman, and child throughout the ages that has bowed, curtseyed, tipped their hat, or anything like that has been committing blasphemy?!! No offense intended, but Bull****. [ This Message was edited by: KSN Doug on 2002-03-05 13:37 ] -

TKD_McGee I'm not sure what branch of the Christian faith you're referring to, but none that I've ever been associated with have ever considered it sacreligous to BOW (in order to just show respect) to inatimate objects. It is, however, to PRAY to a false god and create objects to represent them. If you know of one, let me know so I can stay clear of it. As far as this issue, I read a lot on another board regarding that STUPID suit. I thought I saw were the Judo association won in the end. Personally, the only time I'd throw a kick to the head is if the attacker were bent over. Whether it be because he's charging to tackle, or bent over from a gut shot. I would never attempt a kick to the head if he was fully upright.

Maybe I'm just showing my ignorance, but I thought all that bizarre stuff like demons doing what you described was considered Hentai. Not that I want to discuss it, but what's the difference then. Once explained (for my benefit) we'll return to discussing any of the shows mild enough for this forum.

Spinninggumby, Do you mean you order the video tapes on line, or is there a site where you can watch them on your computer, and not have to buy the tape?

O.k., I've heard enough references in other threads to know I'm not alone in my appreciation for anime. However, I haven't got to the point where I'm getting the Japanese versions (plus my wife would kick my butt). What's your favorite anime series (not single movie)? I really liked Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Universe, and Gundam Wing. However, my favorite is still DBZ! :kaioken: Ooops, just found the other thread on this topic. Oh well. As far as the knee, make sure you're not snapping it on your kicks. That's a very common mistake that will cause severe knee pain. Also, make sure you inform the judges if you would consider it an injury. As far as birthdays, I just don't let anyone know its my birthday.

What's your point there? Not that I condone the subject matter, but I lived in Texas for 20 yrs, and that scenario is unfortunately not outside the realm of possibility. On the other hand, I didn't see the show either. I also have to agree with ZR440. Letting kids practically raise themselves because parents are never home, not forcing "realistic" curfews, and constantly giving in to the "but all my friends get to do whatever they want" argument isn't helping matters.

We have a similar fan to the Chinese. I only know of one form in Kuk Sool Won for double fan, however. I have not reached the point of "formally" learning it, but I believe it is on one of the weapons videos you can get through the KSW home page. Look in the links area for the path if you're interested. It looks like tape 6 is what you would want. [ This Message was edited by: KSN Doug on 2002-02-27 09:43 ]
