How about if it was a hook punch but much more controlled, like a Boxer's Hook punch? i.e Not intoxicated by alcohol.. [ This Message was edited by: Jiggy9 on 2001-12-04 05:53 ]

I think that the crescent kick has it's place in a street fight, if you possess the speed - but only in the right circumstances. But I agree with Angus I would be very weary of using it...

What does everyone think a good defense to a wild hook punch would be?

That reminds me of one of my old favourite kicks ; It starts as an inside crescent kick, stops before you reach the head of the opponent and snaps down into an axe kick into the opponents shoulder. But for me, I'd probably go for the step forward side kick to knee cap....ouch [ This Message was edited by: Jiggy9 on 2001-12-03 10:03 ]

Hi Henry, First of all welcome to the boards. Congratulations on acheiving youre brown belt in Shotokan Karate. I commend you for helping protect youre friends from a potentially dangerous situation, I can understand the way you feel about it at the moment. Personally, even though i realise it isnt the best course of action, I probably wouldnt be able to help myself from getting involved in the fight, I find it extremely infuriating when things like that happen. However, in Karate violence is seen as the last resort, "Hitotsu. Kekki no Yu o Imashimuru Koto." Which means one should refrain from violence. But Karate also encourages defending the path of truth...perhaps the ideal course of action in youre situation may have been firstly trying to intervene and talk to the aggressors and come to some sort of peaceful agreement...but i've always found that talking to intoxicated people in an angry/aggresive state is often futile, in which case walking away with youre friends from the situation would have been a good idea. But, if they get aggresive with you without giving you an oppurtunity to calm the circumstances...then maybe two swift kicks were called for. But that's just my opinion...

There is a problem acknowledged by both scientists, philosophers and mystics. Language is useless when trying to convey 'true' meaning... Scientists resort of mathematical equations to explain what they are trying to say... In the east, when you suddenly realise or understand the meaning, it is reffered to as a moment of enlightement. Each and every individual has to discover their own personal meaning or understanding. If the 'essence' of what is real, truth and enlightenment could be conveyed then everyone could tell their neighbours and we would all be enlightened souls. A perfect example of this can be seen in a non 'chi' sense ; What really is 'Energy'?

just a question havoc...why? why do it? Is all that money worth potentially youre life? -
Sure alot of fights end up on the floor, but almost all fights start whilst standing...So if you can finish there, then there is no need to go to ground.

I'm just wondering what you guys personally think on this topic; In martial arts what are the greatest mental attributes one can have? Likewise, what are the worst?

I dont really have one of those; I tend to reflect my opponents style to throw them off and use appropriate moves. But I do have a few preffred street fighting moves... When i am a slight distance away, take a few quick steps forward towards opponent and jump with knee up (much like you are about to do a simple flying front kick) Carefull not to jump too high, i've had people run into me and send me flying...Anyways they instinctively expect a high kick and lift their hands to gaurd the upper body. Wait unusually long ( so that youre dropping down now) and excecute a side kick whilst snapping youre hips to the persons Knees/Shins.... It's very usefull because it is a very unusual feint, you have an extremely powerfull side kick because of the aerial momentum and hip action....and it kills like a biyatch. When closer up, opponent excecutes straight or hook punch/ fake...Get outside the leading arm anyway you like...and have youre e.g. (if left handed punch) pull their arm towards you with youre left hand, and with youre right apply downwards force or their turned elbow (tai chi move) this foces them to bend down or get closer to the floor and you somehow...quickly move youre right plam to their neck applying intense pressure and sweep their front left leg youre back right leg - which sends them crashing to the floor... ^^ It's actually much simpler then it reads. I also like this one for a straight / hook punch...let's say it was right handed... duck the punch or stop it anyway you like, using youre right hand claw it onto their collar bone, go around them, and bring youre left arm over their neck and grab your own right hand, thus locking their neck. Using youre foot apply pressure to the back of the knee..and push their back forward, hence they fall to the floor whilst in a headlock...if you really want you could just snap their neck...It's a ninjitsu move.

I believe pressure points can be effective against opponents of varying skill level...however i think you have to train in them for ages before you can use them well.
