  2. You train in Farid Dordar 's Dojo? No way..thats pretty cool man..i've been watching his tips thing for months now..and there was that article about him. And Blade'z video is freaking amazing....very very professionaly done man! lol.. I heard that martial arts radio a while back, it was up straight after the september 11th incident, and he had a v.good point. But im thinking if pilots are trained and allowed to carry arms onto the flight, whats going to stop a corrupt pilot from causing chaos? or what happens if a 'terrorist' who initially has no arms manages to take the arms from the hostess? 9. I found this bit in a Health Risk Book, just taking out some of the extracts - you guys might find it intresting : "The Ammociated nicotine used in today's lower nicotine cigarettes actually enter the bloodstream more quickly and has a stronger effect the ordinary cigarettes...." "Smoking kills far more people each year than AIDS, heroine, cocaine, alcohol, car accidents, fire and murder combined. In the U.S alon smoking causes 2 million preventable deaths/year. These are the cancers of the lung, mouth, larynx, oesophagus, bladder, cervix and kidneys. But smoking also contributes to heart attacks, vascular disease and emphysema..." "Apart from depleting one's stores of vitamin C, it also effects the respiration system directly, when exercising not enough oxygen can reach the musclular systems and a net result may be muscle damage."
  10. Thanks for the Link Karateka, just wondering does those rules apply world wide or just in the countries who are a part of the organisation?
  11. Correct me if im wrong, but for choudan punches you usually get 1 point, Joudan hits, 2 points rite? Don't you usually get 3 points for hitting someone on their back??
  12. I used to have this problem too ....but apart from snapping youre kick back - which when youre really tired might not be fast enough...there is another way.. When the opponent grabs youre leg. It'z pretty hard to explain in words..but i will give it a shot. When the opponent grabs youre leg...unless he is Arnold he'z going to have a hard time to keep hold if you put all youre strength and weight to push youre leg towards the floor (similar to the TKD axe kick). So as soon as he grabs it - push youre leg towards the floor with all ur strength...and because youre leg is proportionally heavier and stronger then one's arm...once the downward force is added -youre leg comes down to the floor or youre opponent goes down with youre leg, especially if they are too reluctant to let go. I've used that method alot to unsuspecting people who grab my leg! _________________ Shotokan Karate Black Belt ==Be Like Water - Bruce Lee == [ This Message was edited by: Jiggy9 on 2001-11-06 08:19 ]
  13. I knew a guy who used to do that in Karate tournaments, and boy was he succesfull with it! Only works in tournaments once though...but in a real fight it would be good ish.
  14. Not in order of priority - Physical fitness/strength/flexibility/Speed - Defensive Skills - Philosophy - Fun / Intresting - Provides a Challange - Inspiration - Addiction! - Provides mental/emotional stability n well bein! - Discipline
  15. Who is David Carradine and what is "Kung Fu" T.V show or what? Lol...excuse the ignorance
  16. Couldnt agree mo with what peeps said up there.. I always found that just hitting the basics often and perfecting them helped a great deal...because everytime i went back to them there is always something small that i realise that im doing wrong or could be doing better and then just plain practice till i drop. My sensei used to be really harsh on me, he'd make me stay after and practice, and wouldnt let me go home untill he was satisfied. But yea what peeps say up there!
  17. "There are no such thing as superior styles. " I guess you are right. But I still think Bruce Lee would win Have you ever been in a situation where you're in a fight, or just randomly - you do youre techniques without really thinking about them. Like when youre looking at one of youre friends, and one on youre right throws a play punch at you, and you block it without even thinking about it or looking at where it came from? It happens to me all the time... but what im saying here is that i do my techniques without thinking about them or focussing on a particular instance. So let's say one is in a fight, and someone throws a kick at him from the side...by instinct he blocks it. I stress by instinct because in a fight one is depending on his instinct and reflexes. He doesnt have time to think about if the situation is right for him to use a particular technique..he just does what is engrained in his instinct. Take for example someone who knows no martial arts of any kind, if someone tries to punch him he will instinctively move out of the way...but someone who has trained for an x period will block it with what he has trained in. Right? So, someone who has been training to block a punch in a certain way will do that way instinctivly, but someone who has been training to defend that same punch in a much more effective method will react to that same punch in fight situation in a more effective way...wont he? So i think any technique can work in the right situation, but some will work better then others -depending on the person. Really this is the basis of why i think that someone who trains or has a style of more effective techniques is 'more likely' to be succesfull in a fight. And what you said about one kick and youre on the floor...well it must have been a pretty 'effective' kick for you not to see it coming rite? But what you said about no style being better - i think is totally true, because each 'style' has its strenghts and its weaknesses. But you cant really compare styles....not even in a fight simply because of what you said...The controlling factor being the individual. Because i dont know each fighter personally i cant really comment on their character...so I guess my comments are confined to what i can comment bout i suppose.... You also said that just because a technique doesnt 'look' effective doesnt mean that it isnt. But if a techniqe doesnt 'look' effective doesnt mean that it is either. One must try it out in several fights to know if it is usefull for them or not- i guess. Lol, and i wasnt alive in the 50's or 60's but im sure that all the peeps who said that the art was soft boned and so on hadnt actually taken the time to learn and try out the art. but yea... i do think that you have a good point. Thanks Slim, yea thats what i thought/think too!
  18. I think i should start off with an apology. Im sorry to hear that my opinion on a topic pisses you off, but on recollection i did misphrase what i meant to say, so let me clear that out. I'm not trying to school anyone, just voicing my view point and it's true i havent fought any kung fu expert. Firstly, when i referred to 'style' i meant each fighters own personal style not their respective arts. Additionaly, the biggest error in my statement was that i said Bruce Lee made his own techniques which were more effective then traditional ones. Which, reading now makes no sense to me because he never actually created a new art just took techniques from traditional arts and incorporated them into his style. However, I feel that circumstances and fight environment has changed considerably since the 'creation' of kung fu or any other 'traditional' art...and certain techniques within the art have become more effective and some not so effective. ( i say this as a viewpoint ) I think to be a succesfull allround fighter one must adapt and be proficient at punching, kicking, grappaling and ground fighting- nowadays. I dont dispute that it is the fighter not the art that determines the winner...What i am saying is that Bruce Lee picked out the most effective techniques from the arts and incorporated them into his own style, and thus improved his own kicking, grappaling and ground fighting from his early Wing Tsun days...and thats why I think that on a head to head battle Bruce Lee would be more succesfull. So i apologise for confusing art and style together in my post - thats not what i meant, and i agree with youre concepts/interpretations totally and i dont think i have an agenda regarding who is better bruce lee or jackie chan..doesnt affect me in any way. Finally regarding my Personal martial arts history : I've trained in karate for 10 years, JKD for 5yrs, Judo for 2yrs, and Wing Tsun for 6 months but the instructor left...oh and Wushu n Tai Chi for 3 weeks now. Im also sorry to dissappoint you, but im not a kid. I'm also trying to stay open minded as i can here - but i always thought forums were for people to talk to other people and express their opinions, I do anything wrong? Anyways I realise my viewpoint pissed you off, apologies -but did you really need to get personal about it?
  19. no i havent actually...thats a good idea! But the only problem i face out here that there are few places to learn at, and the styles available are really limited....I dont think they have much else here except shotokan and shoto ryu But i'll check thanks! Do people have any views on hapkido or aikido for me?
  20. amazing you didnt sit there and write that out did you?

  23. thanks guys Karateka, I have no intention of leaving karate, i would just like to indulge in some other arts at the same time simply to round my skills in other areas that Karate does not focus on much .I.E grappaling and ground fighting... Thanks, Brazialian Ju Jitsu?? any more guys?
  24. Okay guys - help me out I do karate and itz my core art, i'm looking for complimentary arts to improve my style...see i figure im pretty decent at the kickboxing range, im looking for arts that can help provide modern day effective methods of defense, grappling range skills and ground fighting skills.. See my number one choice would have been JKD which i did for a month, but the only teacher in the country left.... I've indulged in wing tsun, and judo as well...judo. Let me tell you something about my build and skills : Im pretty tall and lanky...i admit it, my legs are relatively quick and my punches are fast n furious, not all that powerfull though. Judo didnt suit my physiqe and style at all, but i lessons i learned were valuble in the grappling stage.... Wing Tsun and other kung fu related arts would have been good - but it's more of a brand new core art, which would take too much time to master...it is sort of conflicting with my karate based style. I do apply the ying yang theory which chinese arts are based on....i like to take things from arts and use them....but, im looking for another art which can diversify my skills.... I considered kick boxing but that doesnt offer much variety, but i wouldnt mind doing that later.. Im looking towards the thai arts?? Kali?? ANYONE got ideas?!??
