  1. M&M's plain or peanut. Hamburger or cheeseburger as well? I feel goofy now too.
  2. The attitude you display will affect many things. Just about everyone will display more respect to you when you show them respect and proper deference. That is something that has got lost along the way. Everyone is just in too much of a hurry today to display respect and deference to those the encounter along the way. Just think about how a cashier in a store reacts to you when you give them proper respect and interact with them in a pleasant way.
  3. Lots of practice. Practice at slow speeds and full out. Go full out until you get sloppy. Then go slow until you get a bit of a recovery. Then go full out again. Keep doing intervals like that.
  4. A lot of it is political and a lot of it has to deal with each person who gets to the level of being ready to have their own school adds their own unique twists to the base they have learned.

  9. Best then to ask his instructor. Some places do not like gi's with those big patches all over them. Some have a strictly white policy. Then there are the reversably gis - white on one side blue on the other.
  10. Are you turning your pivot foot first so that the toes on that foot face the opposite direction of the kick. That should add to the amount of pivot you are getting and help get the toes on the kicking foot out of the way.
  11. My favorite lower body activity is the eliptical trainer.
  12. When you hit the point of pain in your horse stance stop. Do not go any deeper or you can damage your knees. You should also learn exercises to strengthen the area around your knees. Ie leg extension.
  13. http://www.taikudo-karate.com/ This was the only link I could find. The other link just led back to this one.
  14. "Judo" Gene LaBelle wears a trademark pink gi. The story behind that is that at a tournament or something in Japan one time he sent his gi out to an overnight laundry. Something happened and it came back pink. Not having another one he wore the magnificent pink gi to the affair. The pink color stuck with him.
  15. A middle aged handicapped female is probably the last person you would expect to find in a dojo. I have trained with aerobic and strenght work but it is martial arts that I found to be the most total package. I do not find karate to be lacking in the overall fitness area. I developed strenght, flexibility, coordination, and endurance during my training. Sure the level of fitness I reached did not matched that I left basic training with but I am not 18 anymore. And I can honestly say I have never seen anyone loose any physical conditioning they came to karate allready possessing loose any of it. Fun? Yes, some of it was fun. Some of it is not fun. It is not always fun to try to keep up with people a third of your age. It is not fun to do drills and kata until you feel like one more trip across the floor and you will land in a heap on the floor. As for rounding out your training - well most people are not really capable of seeing what is lacking or not until after they have past the demarcation line of the black belt.
  16. An often overlooked part of the most traditional systems is the healing aspects. In earlier times the students learned to help heal the damage they inflicted on their sparring partners.
  17. In many ways it is the marines that have developed the most complete system. Over the course of their career they prceed through the ranks learning more skills done hand to hand as well as with a variety of weapons. The tan belt they leave basic training with is only a start.
  18. As a historical note most traditonal ninjitsu was practiced within families. And were closed not only to outsiders of the non Japanese kind but also to those outside of the family.
  19. Actually I thing there is no one best art for competition. The best competitors seem to be the ones that have a solid base in a single art then build on that from other styles.
  20. Yeah, all the side blocks in bassai dai generate a lot of nice sounding snap in the gi.
  21. It was not until Funakoshi's generation that karate styles were given names. Itosu taught tode. There are several styles that were given names we recognise that were Itosu's students. But in general the naming of styles is a function of the 20th century.
  22. Jion certainly gives you a good workout. Just out of curiosity what do you think of Jiin and Jitte?
  23. Good luck to all. I am looking forward to one day reading some good articles.
