help chosing a martial art
SaiFightsMS replied to King of Fighters's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
With 10 months remaining I think I would spend my time soaking up as much knowledge and doing as much work on my technique as I could in my remaining time. For the younger crowd sometimes things look really different in 10 months time. -
I did matsubayashi shorin ryu before I did shotokan. I remember a lot of it but I now to the shotokan version of the heians rather than the pinans I originally learned. And I get lost in the shorin ryu rohai and do the shito ryu rohai that learned afterwards.

Good luck KaratekaAikidoist. This was an old thread. I think that over time some of us have had some attitude changes and some of us have learned a bit more. I wonder how many of us that were around during the early posts on this thread are still training?

Congratulations.

Isshin ryu is a solid style. Here is another link to a good isshin ryu site. http://www.isshinryu.com/index.htm

KarateForums.com Survivor 2 - Final Challenge
SaiFightsMS replied to Patrick's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
This was a challange that was part of the first survivor game and one I think should be a classic challange for us. There were submissions in the last one that were serious and some that were what you could consider a fantastic piece of fiction. Be serious or be funny. Just enjoy what you are creating. -

When I first started I went into a Shorin ryu class that had just a few students. Our instructor taught just our class to keep his hand in at teaching. He did it basically just to teach. It was a very small group. And he was a very encouraging teacher. We were always told to "work with what you have". Meaning that each person worked to the best of their abilities. No one ever really slacked off. It was such an atmosphere that everyone wanted to do their best. I can remember having to crawl off into the corner more than once when I hit my absolute limit and collapsed. We were not pushed just encouraged in a very positive manner. It was a really terrific experience.

Actually some shotokan schools also offer a kobudo program. How do I know? My school was one. We did bo first all year round then rotated a secondary weopon every year. For secondary weapons we did sai, tonfa and nunchaku. Many who are into traditional weapons claim that Shureido weapons are the best.

I will admit that I am a bit curious - has anyone tried paint balls from a blow gun?

Actually Kamidake would you believe that the people who live next door to my Mom, that lady's sister still belly dances and is in her 50's. She teaches.

Start with a simple squeeze ball. Something that is really simple and very effective is to close your hands into fists. Then open your hands and spread your fingers. Start with slow and gentle movements. Then gradually increase the intensity. And do not expect overnight results from any type of strenght activity in this area. Also hold your arms out in front of you with the palms down and your elbows bent so that your arms are just above waist level while seated. Then just rotate your arms from the elbow down so that your plams face the ceiling.

Try a long hot bath with epsom salts and gentle stretching. And of course time.

Forearm type crutches are less stressful on the shoulders that full lenght underarm crutches. Also if it is possible to use some type of a four point gair versus a swing through also takes out some of the stress.

How about the guy who fell in between the tracks in the subway. A train was due in. Everyone kept saying "give me your hand, give me your hand". The guy would not give them his hand. Then someone had an idea and asked him what he did for a living - "I am an IRS agent". Take my hand the bright guy said. And IRS agent never gives anyone anything they just know how to take.

I am going to move this to another area because of the direction the conversation has gone. -
I have a punching bag rather than a makiwara.

I found a written description of shihohai on a chito ryu site. It is the depth of the stance and the ability of the person doing the kata to move from move to move smoothly in a deep stance that really makes the difference in katas done in kiba dachi or shiko dachi.

Welcome to the forum. We have a nice representation of over 40's here.

What may sound very disrespectful to some of us is not always meant that way by the person that said it. Always try to take the context of where, when, who and why something was said. There are many ways to look at things and events.

I am not familiar with shihohai. It sounds like something that may be similar that happens to those who do tekki kata in competition. If the stances are done properly it scores well. Because it is a hard stance to move gracefully and kick out of.
