  1. Those are very good questions. And they did not start coming up until more of us westerners became involved in the arts. I have seen a study on the incidence of injuries in various sports but nothing like what you are looking for.
  2. Their are 8 techniques that are done walking around in a circle. Sometimes forward sometimes backward.
  3. Okay think heian godan after the jump. The cross footed stance. The tekki katas use that stance and kiba dachi exclusively. Back stance is kokutsu dachi.
  4. I find that the katas peel apart in layers. Applications appear over time. Take a technique done in kosa dachi. It may seem odd to do someting with your feet all crossed up. But when you look at a military about face done on two counts you see kosa dachi as a possible turn and then all sorts of new things open up.
  5. Is it possible to know everything?
  6. It takes a lifetime to really master even a single kata. And over time new applications pop up. I see things in the first kata I learned now that I would not have been capable of understanding then.
  7. I started working bo at 6th kyu.
  8. I was waiting for someone to pop up with Monkeygirls technique.
  9. Take a look at some of the older threads in internal arts. There are places where others have shared favorite meditation techniques.
  10. The majority of people really do not appreciate an argumentative or abrasive slant to posts.
  11. My pants go through at the seams first. Then the material thins. With the tops the material thins. One time in class I had put an older top on and was working with my tonfa before class. I suddenly felt some air after I had brought the handle along my side at an odd angle. The whole side of the gi had ripped out.
  12. Thank you Hobbitbob.
  13. I am really hard on gi's especially the pants. I finally settled on the 10 oz pro force gi. I go through about 2 pairs of pants a year. But can get up to 2 years out of a 10 oz top. I am a really heavy sweater though. The really expensive heavy wieght gi's just did not come out cost effective for me in the long run. I still go through the pants in much shorter amount of time than most do. It does seem that the heavier sweaters go through gi's quicker.
  14. I will admit that I bought extra black pants because they are so nice to work out in. And I got really tired of ripping out my sweats stretching. Sweats just aren't made to do the splits in.
  15. There is also lawn mowing, snow shoveling, odd jobs and little ways to make money a bit at a time. And if you can save it does add up. This time of year maybe you have neighbors who would pay a young person to spade up their garden?
  16. You will also find some differences in terminology. Isshin ryu is Okinawan in origin and Shotokan renamed many things to fit better in Japan. The two languages were not the same.
  17. Nunchaku kata are very hard to find because the nunchaku are not the most traditional of weapons. Most katas that exist are someting that were made for specific schools.
  18. There is also the possiblility of doing your best in the dojo and at school. And in that way convincing your parents that what you are doing is "good for you" and helping you in other areas.
  19. The punches are pretty different aren't they. They have a different way of doing stances too.
  20. Good luck to you KaratekaAikidoist.
  21. Some people don't hem they just roll up the excess lenght. I remember one test there were some students testing for black belt. In the group was one in a brand new gi. An unhemmed gi. He was having a real problem with the pant legs coming unrolled every time he did certain kicks. Another student was in an old gi. One he got before a growth spurt. I have no idea how he still managed to get into it, maybe with a shoe horn? What a difference.
  22. Some of what I have learned is matoyoshi line. Some was pretty generic.
  23. LOL ZR440, the Taco Bell Flatulation do was unforgettable. Now that you bring it up how often to you practice this art before sparring class? It has to be devastating on an opponent.
  24. Welcome to the forum.
