  1. Please remember to respect each other and the opinion of fellow forum members.
  2. Tani Ha shito ryu is on of the factions that came from Kenwa Mabuni's students. Shukokia, I believe, has it's roots in shotokan.
  3. The first link illustrated kiba dachi. Notice that both feet are pointed forward and parallel to each other. From that position pivot on your heels and point your feet out keeping them in line with your knees and lower your self into shiko dachi. http://www.gojuryu.net/ This is a nice goju link.
  4. The technique one is going to execute should be taken into account when one goes into a stance and the depth of the stance should be adjusted accordingly.
  5. Killing junior students is a definate no-no. Have you noticed though that those who really want to do well and are trying as hard as they can and get frustrated that well - sometimes the frustration gets in the way. Don't you think that the process of doing a technique over and over to learn it teaches patience. Moreso with a technique someone is having trouble with.
  6. No question is dumb if you really want to know the answer. The first time someone connects with a groin kick you will definately know the difference.
  7. Wether it is "right" or not depend on the policy of the school you attend. Actually I like black pants with a white top.
  8. Hi yongchoi welcome to the forum. You forgot to give us the link to your website. The list of katas you provided does look much like shotokan. Do you also do the naihanchi or tekki katas at some point?
  9. There is a big difference between a person who passed a test and got a strip of black material to wear around thier waist and a black belt. Most of the difference between the two lies between the thought process that goes on between the ears of the two widely different groups.
  10. Patience is one of the many things that can be learned in a dojo.
  11. Good luck to you. I hope you do enjoy your training.
  12. To learn to block.
  13. A good way to build a weight set is to get handles and weight plates separately. Find a sporting goods store that sells weight plates individually. Buy plates to go with your dumb bell handles as you can. Try to always buy 4 plates at a time of the weight denomination you are buying. That is how I built my set.
  14. It would really be better to wait a few months after you start training before you attempt full contact sparring with friends.
  15. Another benefit of the repetitive drills is that the patterned movements actually help to reduce muscle spasticity. It is also possible to learn to harness any jerky movements to add speed and power to blocks and strikes.
  16. In a school where you use a junior/ senior or sempai/kohai relationship between students of different ranks the more senior students begin to learn how to help those coming up through the ranks behind them. I think this really helps some learn responsibility and concern for others. There is just something about the way you feel when you have been helping a student with something they were struggling with and it comes time for them do demonstrate that very thing in front of everyone and they can do it becuase of the time the two of you spent working on it.
  17. The only real way to get past it is to keep practicing until you get the hang of it. That is the one technique I worked on for longer than any of them. Try working on it while hanging onto a chair and doing it in slow motion. Believe it or not one day you will be trying to do it and you will. It just takes persistence.
  18. There was a link Ramy posted that goes to her club. It is not in english but the pictures are really very good. And the terms are given in Japanese. Here is a link to a site that I have referred to from time to time. http://www.shotokankata.com/
  19. I trained for a few years in a group where I was usually the only female student. When white belts step into the dojo they are all beginners and equal in status.
  20. There are several styles who can trace their roots back to Itosu. The difference between shudokan and shotokan comes from Tomaya's time in Taiwan and the influence what he learned under some Chinese masters he brought back to his style. Okinawan Kempo, Shorin ryu, Shito ryu are some of the other styles that trace their roots back to Itosu.
  21. Since I allready have a solid base in karate I think I would go for the arnis.
  22. Go for it. It is not that hard being the only girl in the class if discipline is maintained.
  23. Closed due to lack of respect.
  24. A training journal is a good idea for any type of physical training. It allows you to keep track of your process. And can also be used to set goals and the path you plan to take to achieve them.
  25. That is one of the benefits of kata.
