  1. It is not the number of moves that are stressed in a kata it is more of a training exercise in how to combine moves. Say take a hammerfist, downblock, center punch, head block, shuto and put them together in one order you have Heian shodan.
  2. During an early period of history there was a very prolific trade among the pacific rim. There was a lot of exchange of information about the martial arts that was also exchanged during the same time period. Some cross training and adaption of techniques and forms would have been inevitable.
  3. Please no derogatory comments or remarks about a specific race, country or group of people.
  4. Good luck. Have you learned Fyukyukata Ichii?

    katas

Shotokan has 26 katas, shito ryu has over 50, isshin ryu has 8 empty hand katas, Matsubayashi shorin ryu has 18 empty hand katas. There really isn't a right or a wrong number of katas for a style to have.
  6. Welcome to the forum.
  7. Look to see that the techniques of the higher belts are better than those of the lower belts. Look to see if the students who need correction are getting it. Decide why you want to train and see if the what the students are being taught and how they are training match the reason you want to learn.
  8. There was an earlier thead on Goshin ryu. Here is the link. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=64816&highlight=&sid=959ad1a63b12b55b0bdff3b0c3521797#64816 And I did a short search for information on goshin ryu. Some of the websites made it look very similar to shotokan and there was one that had more in common with goju.
  9. In my opinion I would concentrate more heavily on the upperbody work until the knee felt better. There is a lot of upper body work that can be done. And depending on how the knee feels let up on the stances. If you are going to class make sure the instructor knows there is a problem and that you are letting up on the stances because of that.
  10. I have to agree with those who say a tread mill is a usefull tool for an indoor workout. It is possible to use a headset radio or cdplayer for boredom preventon. It is also possible to get a bookholder and read. Or park the treadmill in front of the tv. Odor problems - how about incense?
  11. That is not a style that is brought up here often. What can you tell us about what you are learning?
  12. Interesting point. Some of the older Okinawan forms did come from China. Their origins are obscured by time. It is interesting though to look at them from other points of view though. The Naihanchi katas seem to have a wide variety of interpretations and many differing interpretations. They are really quite fascinating if you look beyond the surface.
  13. Actually if you think about it wouldn't learning a drunken form or style held you in a situation where you became unbalanced? Say you got caught in a bad situation you might have a bit of and edge you would not have had before recovering your balance or getting out of a physically awkward position.
  14. Trying to find a way to continue training or adjust your training because of an injury or a temporary limitation can in the long run actually enhance your training.
  15. I think most of us do have the good luck to get occasional glimpses of how effective what we are trying to learn can really be. It is those occasional glimpses that can really motivate.
  16. Right the more links we have to the more different kinds of arts and styles the better. I still think we are a bit weak in links to chinese terms. And are there and terms specific to muay thai?
  17. Welcome to the forum.
  18. Welcome to the forum. Yep many schools do offer private instruction.
  19. I will admit to having to patch a hole in the wall a few years ago. It was an accident. Just a little ooops.
  20. Not bricks I had to do patio blocks for my nidan test. Don't ever tell me a palm heel strike is useless if you are in range of me being able to use it on you.
  21. Everyone please just read the last post and think about it. It was a very powerful statement. I don't think there is anything anyone can say to improve upon it. And it would be terrible to demean such an incredible post. Just read it and think about what the guy has to say.
  22. Ibuprofin is really hard on the stomach. It is often understated how irritating it is; never take it on an empty stomach. I think anyone who encounters a serious struggle in their training contemplates stopping. It is hard to explain but simple at the same time. That is how you figure out how much you really want whatever it is you are training for. Does that make any sense.
  23. Most interior walls are made of soft materials. Not the supports but the plasterboard is really easy to knock holes in.
  24. ROTFLMAO. Gosh and I am five years older than you are. These kids must think we are ancient.
  25. http://www.wwnet.net/~kc8hr/ Here is a link for the website for a guy who just happens to be a 4th dan in Isshin ryu Karate. He is legit as they come. He also happens to be a wheel chair user. And there is a guy named Ron Scanlon who does Kung fu Sans soo who would be happy to demonstrate that a person in a wheelchair can very easily handle someone who would be goofy enough to attack him from behind. http://www.upbeat.net/ROLLING/ROLLING.HTM http://www.blackbeltshop.com/kung_fu_san_soo_by_ron_scanlon.htm
