  1. I saw a site with wado katas recently and a site with shorin ryu katas but have not yet found goju katas in downloadable videos.
  2. All 14 katas. 9 defensive sets and 9 offensive sets. Drills - kihon moving back and forth across the floor. Successful execution of a hand break - twice and a foot break twice. Then succesful kumite or sparring. Oh and a written test subimitted ahead of time.
  3. Place yourself in a stance like that. Have someone give you a little nudge. After you regain your balance make the stance wider and repeat the trial. Then you will know why the stance needs to be wider.
  4. Welcome to the forum.
  5. Let's see what kind of responses this thread brings.
  6. Sounds pretty nasty. I have actually seen very few injuries in the dojo. When we have students come in injured it is usually from basketball.
  7. I have taught some 6 year olds. The big things are knowing left from right and attention span. There is a lot of difference between a 6 year old that has had the benefit of first grade and one who has not.
  8. A lot depends on the packaging and how it would be submitted to the general public. One of the drawbacks is that a great many people do not understand the skill involved in submission. The uneducated public wants to see action.
  9. Sounds like it has its roots in traditonal Okinawan karate. How much of an emphasis does your school place on sparring?
  10. I moved this over to this forum. Buried within this area of the forum are other stories like that that were in the old philosophy area before the forum was upgraded.
  11. Open-handed techniques are very traditional. And can be very powerful.
  12. I like the way you said that Shortstick.
  13. It appears to be an off shoot of Goju from the little I could find in a search.
  14. Isn't ibuku related to breathing techniques?
  15. A lot depends on how old you are. Forms are good for solo training as well as doing repititive drills like the ones you do in class; back and forth blocks, punches, strikes, kicks. Personally I have a wavemaster.
  16. I think if the ego gets left out over time as one continues to learn after black belt, (and if one continues to learn after black belt), that the more one learns the more one sees the similarities in the various styles. And as part of that we also see what we lack in our own learning to become more well rounded as a martial artist. As we begin to rectify that if we do it honestly I think we do grow closer and closer to a similar convergence. Kind of like a New England traffic circle very confusing at first - and the more roads going into the easier it is to get lost.
  17. The belt colors under the name you registered with KarateForums relates to your forum rank. You earn rank here by participation. The more posts you make the higher your rank goes.
  18. Many think this is odd and strange but some believe that a weapon acquires a spirit. And that misuse of a weapon diminishes its spirit.
  19. Everyone progresses at their own rate regardless of the style.
  20. I am sure you will let us know how it went. It is a major event in ones life regardless of how old the person is.
  21. A lot in a choice like that depends on how far along you are in the first art. My 'opinion' is that one should have a good grounding in the basics in the first art before starting a second. And too a lot depends on the individual person. Like the way some can take college level Sociology and Psychology at the same time and some can't.
  22. Welcome to the forum. Some Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu here along with the shotokan and the shito ryu.
  23. Welcome to the forum.
  24. Self defense from a book without benefit of qualified instructor to critique technique? Not the best result. When I work with a book I use them mainly for forms - as a refresher and a way to compare how different groups do the "same" form in slightly, or not so slightly different ways.
  25. One of the requirements for posting here at KarateForums is to respect the opinions and the styles of other martial artists. That said insults or disrespect toward another poster or their style will result in threads being closed.
