  1. When I started getting more involved in martial arts sites I decided that my screen name Sshadowsmom did not fit too well. (My cat is named Shadow and when I first came on line someone else had Shadowsmom so I added an extra s.) The sai is one of my favorite weapons. And martial arts has been the best thing I have ever done in terms of fighting off the affects of the multiple sclerosis. So I put them all together Sai + fighting the ms and got SaiFightsMS.
  2. Sounds like a really cool book Yoda.
  3. Yes I have. I have done some kata and practiced kicking techniques in the local pool. During non busy times of course. The water adds resistance and slows down the movement. In the water with the slower movement you can concentrate on the movement and work on how you are doing the movement in a way you cannot do on the floor. It adds an element to you training unlike any other.
  4. In my way of thinking a person looses their newbey type standing when they can help a new white belt perform some basic skill. Like how to line up, how to tie a belt, which side of the gi goes on top, even help a bit with the first kata. And be humble about it.
  5. Hello Beaker and welcome. This is a really good site. Ask all the questions you want. This can be a good place for support. I have seen people outgrow gi's. I watched a kid one time test for shodan ho in a gi so short and so tight i wondered how he got into the thing.
  6. This was such a hotly contested item in the martial arts world. And so few can really comprehen it. But, don't you find after years of bowing to your opponent, to sensei and at the beginning and end of class don't you find yourself tempted to bow at other times as well? Out side of the dojo? Do you not find yourself being more aware of how much you respect other people?
  7. Ah a touch of self honesty. How refreshing. We do tend to think too much of ourselves at time don't we. Is there any among us who has not been a pia at one point in time?
  8. Yes and there have been some rare deaths in other sports when people have been hit in the chest in that area. I have a memory of kids in baseball being accidentally hit in the chest. Remember there is an inherant lethality in what we do. Many martial artists are conditioned to withstand impact that would really hurt an untrained person.
  9. During Midievel times many unique and interesting looking weapons were developed in Europe. And how about chain mail? They did some unique armour work. As well as what they called "quarterstaff".
  10. Wow Three60 that is really interesting. I bet it is hard for him sometimes with all the noise that can be involved in training. I think we all gain much from our training. Just it is easier to see in some than in others.
  11. Hello
  12. This looked interesting. Thought maybe those who have came into the forum more recently might enjoy it.
  13. Chh you my friend are lucky. Both substances are better done with out. The world need more designated drivers.
  14. Someone just asked about this so up to the top it goes. _________________ Shotokan Karate, bo, sai Karate means a better life [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-06-15 14:28 ]
  15. Good info Yoda. Now does anyone have any experience dealing with the problem or all you all to young? I saw a really good x-ray of a heel spur. It looked like a 12x4 mm protrusion with a bit of a hook at the end.
  16. Ad they have told you the best that can be done. Make sure you cool down properly after class. Post class stretching really sounds like something you need to take the time to do.
  17. I have had the good fortune to train in gyms where such occurences are rare. The place I currently train is populated with a large number of business people who work in the downtown area. Business and artificially performance enhancing substances do not coexist well. Most of the supplements consumed in this gym are of the nature produced by American Body Building and obtained from a vending machine.
  18. Cool Yoda come to weapons and tell us about them.
  19. Harpoon if it is in relation to something you really want to know - there are no dumb questions. You never know how many other people will benefit from responses to your question.
  20. Thanks Yoda. I hope a few do come in and at least visit. I may go back to the other site and send individual email invites in a day or so.
  21. Yes those are some of the terms I have learned in class. Someplace I have a nice chart with the names on it. I was going to post a list of the terms only I can not find my list. :bawling:JI think it perished in the waterbed flood last month.
  22. The Korean Pyong Ahn, Okinawan Pinan, and Japanese Heian, are all basically the same animal. Many forms from Korea, Okinawa, and Japan all have their roots in the same Chinese forms.
  23. Okay, I finally found a small online group of handicapped martial artists. Many of whom are invovled in TDK. And of course I recommended that they all visit this site. One is specifically looking for a bit of reasearch. Some one getting ready for her 2nd degree black belt Kickchick. I hope she comes in and finds you. It has been a very difficult thing to find information in the area of disability and martial arts. I think those who are involved are usually in integrated settings and do the same things as there able bodied class mates. The way I came through. I really hope a few of them come in and look around. I think this is one of the most open sites I have seen. And a place where anyone can quickly become part of the group. Sai
  24. These type of threads are a part of what make this site so successful. We have our serious areas and then relax.
  25. From what I have seen Chh has it correct. Dan-chu refers to a very specific point - as in si-gitsu which is the solar plexus.
