Tobias I think I have noticed something with the stances hangetsu and sanchin. Doing them with the empasis on turning the knees in creates more stress. Doing them with the emphasis being on closing the groin area is much less stressfull on the knees. Would anyone like to try this and see what they think?

In my wanderings and research on kata I think there is a standard list of "core Goju Ryu" katas. There are some schools that have more katas. Some schools supplement the core goju katas with chinese forms. It is all fairly interesting.

Shorin ryu uses the Okinawan names for the katas. And the stances are much higher. More is similar than different however. They both stress equal use of hands and feet. In his book Nagamine credits one of Funakoshi's books with giving him the determination to stay involved in the training of the martial arts. He worked in the police department. And trained many Okinawan police in the martial arts.

There are some articles about Shotokan and weapons and Funakoshi and the bo in the Journal of Shotokan Research. Sorry I don't have the link right now. It got lost when my hard drive had to be wiped out and restarted. My favorite weapons are the bo and the sai. I have also trained and hold 5th kyu rank in tonfa and nunchaku.

When Funakoshi began his work of taking the Okinawan way of empty handed fighting to Japan he changed the names for a reason. To make them more acceptable to the Japanese. Japan and Okinawa were 2 totally different nations in the past. Many Okinawans resented the way they were made into a prefecture under Japan. Some of the name changes Funakoshi made were accepted and remain. Some were not and the older names remained. Sorry I do not have a list of which is which right now. The most noted examples are Tekki/Naihanchi and Heian/Pinan.

Deep water jogging is an excellant supplemental training activity. And there are water boots to add resistance to increase leg strength. As well as aquatic dumb bells.

Jack you question things so deeply and have such insight at times. Are you sure in a previous life you weren't a sage? At times you are much to serious for a 15 year old. Rember in your balance to have some fun too.

Preparing for Tournament
SaiFightsMS replied to KickChick's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Maybe a little "bitter" training. Training the form at all speeds and differing conditions in preparation. It might turn on a lightbulb of a new way to tweak the form. -
Different clubs in the same style can sometimes have different ranking systems. It would be best to find the structure for the club you are training in. Not at all a stupid question. There is an amazing number of ranking systems out there.

Lin Kong Jing
SaiFightsMS replied to ad's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
No I have not seen that article. I have seen information about the topic in other places. With the super fantastic claims removed Qigong has some value for those desiring a mentally clearing exercise without a lot of physical stress. It can help clear and calm the mind and improve mental focus. Now about fireballs and forcefields. That is not something I see as a possiblity for today. -
I have been fortunate in not encountering any biases in the dojo. I have been extremely fortunate to train under instructers who are open minded and willing to accept an eager student. Phantasmatic I hope your friend finds a new dojo where they will accept him for who he is and respect his desire to learn the martial arts.

Kenny the Rooster Well, Kenny the rooster costs a lot of money, but the farmer decides he'd be worth it. So, he buys Kenny. The farmer takes Kenny home and sets him down in the barnyard, first, giving the rooster a pep talk. I want you to pace yourself now. You've got a lot of chickens to service here, and you cost me a lot of money. Consequently, I'll need you to do a good job. So, take your time and have some fun," the farmer said, with a chuckle. Kenny seemed to understand, so the farmer pointed toward the Hen house and Kenny took off like a shot. WHAM!- Kenny nails every hen in the hen house- three or four times, and the farmer is really shocked. After that the farmer hears a commotion in the duck pen, sure enough, Kenny is in there. Later, the farmer sees Kenny after a flock of geese, down by the lake. Once again - WHAM! He gets all the geese. By sunset he sees Kenny out in the fields chasing quail and pheasants. The farmer is distraught and worried that his expensive rooster won't even last 24 hours. Sure enough, the farmer goes to bed and wakes up the next day, to find Kenny on his back, stone cold in the middle of the yard. Vultures are circling overhead. The farmer, saddened by the loss of such a colorful and expensive animal, shakes his head and says, "Oh, Kenny, I told you to pace yourself. I tried to get you to slow down, now look what you've done to yourself." Kenny opens one eye, nods toward the vultures circling in the sky and says, "Shhh, they're getting closer".
